A 2008 University of Tokyo study demonstrated an elastic conductor that combined substantial stretchability with measurable electrical conductivity, then used it with printed organic transistors in a rubberlike active matrix. The conductor reached 57 siemens per centimeter and 134% stretchability; the assembled matrix was a separate specimen, reported to withstand 70% stretching in one or two directions without mechanical or electrical damage. These were research-prototype results, not evidence of a product for sale.

What the researchers built

In “A rubberlike stretchable active matrix using elastic conductors,” Tsuyoshi Sekitani and colleagues described a conductor made by dispersing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a fluorinated copolymer, then coating the composite film with silicone rubber. The paper appeared in Science in 2008; PubMed lists 7 August 2008 as the article date and 12 September 2008 as the publication date. The authors were affiliated with the University of Tokyo’s Quantum-Phase Electronics Center. PubMed record and abstract.

The dispersion used the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide. The paper’s abstract reports that SWNT content could reach 20 weight percent without reducing the copolymer’s mechanical flexibility or softness. The resulting material was a composite conductor, not a nanotube-only wire.

What the measurements mean

The headline material figures describe the coated elastic conductor: 57 siemens per centimeter conductivity and 134% stretchability, as reported by the study authors. They are not measurements of the finished active-matrix sheet, and they should not be treated as performance specifications for a current product. PubMed record and abstract.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The team also integrated the conductor with printed organic transistors. That assembled active matrix had an effective area of 20 by 20 square centimeters and was reported to tolerate 70% stretching both uniaxially and biaxially without mechanical or electrical damage. This 70% result belongs to the integrated sheet; it is a different measurement from the conductor’s 134% stretchability.

Specimen or result Reported figure What it describes
Coated elastic conductor 57 S/cm conductivity; 134% stretchability The conductor material, not the complete transistor matrix.
Integrated active matrix 70% uniaxial and biaxial stretching without mechanical or electrical damage The assembled sheet combining the conductor and printed organic transistors.
Active-matrix effective area 20 × 20 cm The area of the research demonstration reported in the abstract.

Why use carbon nanotubes in a soft conductor?

Conductive fillers can make a flexible polymer stiffer, but the study’s approach was aimed at preserving softness while incorporating a high proportion of nanotubes. In a contemporaneous report, team leader Takao Someya described the direction as unusual: “Carbon nanotubes are sometimes used to increase a material’s stiffness. This is quite the opposite direction and a unique feature of our material.” That quotation was reported by Chemistry World in 2008.

What applications were proposed—and what was demonstrated

The practical significance was the possibility of placing circuits on surfaces that bend or move. The Science abstract cited curved surfaces and moving parts such as a robot-arm joint as potential uses. Contemporary reporting also discussed flexible displays, wearable electronics, artificial skin for humanoid robots, and interactive surfaces. Those were proposed applications, not systems or products demonstrated by this paper. An elbow bending in an illustration of robot skin, for example, is an example of the intended use, not evidence of a deployed robotic system.

The demonstrated result was a laboratory-scale active-matrix prototype. The available publication record and contemporaneous summaries establish neither commercial availability nor commercial deployment, and they do not establish present-day suppliers, prices, or adoption. John Rogers, identified in the contemporaneous Chemistry World report as a nanofabrication expert at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, called the material an “innovative type of composite material that is electrically conductive even when stretched to large strains.” This is a secondary-source quotation, not a claim about later product performance.
