For most ASP.NET Core application tests, don’t use EF Core’s UseInMemoryDatabase provider as a stand-in for your production database. It is not relational and can behave differently in important ways. Use SQLite in-memory when a fast relational substitute is enough, and test against your production database for behavior that depends on its provider.
“Never” is too absolute: Microsoft says InMemory can support limited, basic tests, but describes it as highly limited and discourages it for most application testing. The right choice depends on what a test needs to prove.
Why EF Core InMemory can give misleading results
EF Core’s InMemory provider is not a relational database provider. A test that passes against it does not establish that the same operation will work against SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or another relational production database. Microsoft warns that the provider does not behave like a real database in many important ways (Microsoft Learn: EF Core testing overview).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It cannot verify relational behavior
Because InMemory does not provide relational database behavior, it cannot prove that relational constraints and other database-specific semantics work as intended. It is a poor substitute when the test’s purpose is to validate persistence behavior rather than isolated application logic.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Transactions and raw SQL are unsupported
The provider does not support transactions or raw SQL. If an application relies on either, an InMemory test cannot validate that path. Use a relational provider for those tests, and use the production provider when correctness depends on its SQL dialect or behavior.
Queries may behave differently
Query results can differ between InMemory and a production database. For example, string comparison may be case-sensitive in one environment and case-insensitive in another. A test can therefore pass or fail for reasons that do not match production.

Choose the test database by what the test must prove
| Test approach | What it can establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| EF Core InMemory | Limited, basic scenarios that do not need relational behavior | Not a relational database; transactions and raw SQL are unsupported, and query behavior may differ |
| SQLite in-memory | Relational behavior with an isolated, in-memory test database | SQLite is not identical to a different production provider; SQL and query behavior can differ |
| Production database provider | Behavior against the database system the application actually uses, including provider-specific features | Requires a test database and more setup than a lightweight in-memory substitute |
Microsoft recommends SQLite rather than EF Core InMemory for in-memory testing in its ASP.NET Core integration testing guidance. SQLite is relational, so it is generally a closer substitute, but it does not guarantee production-provider results. Microsoft’s example: SQL Server string comparisons are case-insensitive by default, while SQLite is case-sensitive (Microsoft Learn: choosing a testing strategy).

SQLite in-memory is a practical choice when a test needs relational behavior without connecting to the production database. Keep the underlying SQLite connection open for the lifetime of the test database. SQLite creates the in-memory database when that connection opens and deletes it when it closes; if the connection closes between operations, the database can reset.

For an ASP.NET Core integration test, replace the application’s registered DbContext service in the test host after the application’s Program.cs registration. Microsoft’s integration-testing example configures this through builder.ConfigureServices. Choose SQLite for relational in-memory isolation, or configure the production provider with a dedicated test database when the test needs production behavior.
Keep a focused set of tests on the production provider
SQLite tests cannot prove that provider-specific SQL, functions, transactions, or query behavior work on a different production database. Run tests against the production database system for the behaviors where that difference matters. This does not mean every test needs to be an integration test: Microsoft notes that integration tests are slower and recommends focusing them on important infrastructure scenarios.

A balanced suite can use:
- Unit tests for isolated method logic that does not need to prove database behavior.
- Focused integration tests for important request and persistence paths, including representative read, write, update, and delete operations.
- Production-provider tests for queries, transactions, raw SQL, and provider-specific functions that must work in production.
Cover the important infrastructure paths rather than every possible data permutation. Microsoft’s integration-testing guidance describes a focused set of representative read, write, update, and delete tests as usually adequate for database and file-system components.
When is UseInMemoryDatabase acceptable?
Use it only when the test is deliberately limited to basic behavior and does not claim to validate relational or production-provider behavior. If the point of the test is to check how the application interacts with its real database, choose a relational test provider instead. Microsoft’s guidance is not that InMemory can never be used; it is that the provider is highly limited and discouraged for most application testing.

What about a repository abstraction?
A repository layer can let application tests replace database access with a test double, but it changes the application architecture and adds implementation and maintenance work. It is a deliberate design choice, not a provider switch or a drop-in testing setting. Consider it when the abstraction serves the application as well as its tests; otherwise, SQLite or focused production-provider tests may be a more direct fit.
