There is no fixed number of eero extenders that works for every home. Start with your gateway eero, then add a node only if coverage remains weak—and place it where it can still connect reliably to the rest of the mesh. A node placed inside a dead zone may not be able to carry a useful signal there.
How many eero nodes should you start with?
Start with the gateway eero and your existing network. Add one node at a time to address specific rooms or areas where coverage is inadequate. The right count depends on your floor plan, building materials, gateway location, interference and the areas where you need reliable Wi-Fi; a square-footage estimate alone cannot determine it.
Think in terms of coverage gaps and mesh connections, not a target number. Dense walls or multiple floors may call for additional nodes, while repositioning an existing eero or using Ethernet may solve a weak area without adding hardware.

Place the node between the gateway and the weak area, not directly in the dead zone. Eero’s placement guidance recommends keeping eeros 20 to 30 feet apart and no more than 50 feet apart. Treat those distances as a starting point: walls and interference can make a shorter distance necessary.

Choose a central, open spot on a hard, flat surface, roughly halfway between the floor and ceiling. Avoid cabinets and heat sources. Brick, stone, metal, plaster, lath and wire-reinforced walls can weaken a wireless link; appliances, metal furniture and nearby networks can also interfere. Where practical, reduce the number of walls between nodes or aim for line of sight.
How can you tell whether another node will help?
- Identify the weak area. Note the rooms or work areas where Wi-Fi is unreliable and where they sit relative to the gateway and existing nodes.
- Check the mesh link. In the eero app, inspect the connection details for the node serving that area. During setup, the app can also check an added node’s location and flag a weak connection.
- Try repositioning first. If a node has a weak upstream connection, move it closer to the gateway or another well-connected node, and reduce nearby obstacles or sources of interference. Eero advises experimenting with placement.
- Recheck before purchasing. If the link remains weak after repositioning, consider adding a node between the existing mesh and the coverage gap. Confirm that the model you choose can join your current network.
Would a wired connection be a better fix?
If you can run Ethernet to a node, a wired connection can improve speed and signal strength. Wireless links are typically slower and more susceptible to interference, so a wired connection may be preferable when the route and equipment allow it. If wiring is not practical, place the wireless node where it can maintain a strong connection upstream rather than at the far edge of the weak area.

Do eero coverage figures tell you how many nodes to buy?
No. Eero identifies eero 7 as an indoor extender and advertises up to 2,000 square feet of indoor coverage per unit in its product information. That is a manufacturer figure, not a guarantee for a particular home or a formula for how many units you need. Obstructions, placement and the quality of the mesh connection affect the result.
Before buying an additional eero mesh node, verify that the model is compatible with your existing network and check the current product listing. Compatibility combinations and product availability can change.
