Verdict: The Edifier S1000W is a capable all-in-one stereo system for listeners who want network streaming, Bluetooth and several physical inputs without buying a separate amplifier. It produces a powerful, lively presentation and offers useful app control, but its large, deep cabinets need real shelf or stand space. The missing HDMI input and lack of a built-in phono preamp are the two buying decisions that matter most.

SoundGuys reached a similar conclusion after testing a company-supplied pair for five days (firmware 4.6.430231, Edifier Home app 3.1.6): “If you have room to accommodate the Edifier S1000W, it supplies a satisfying sound for most listeners, alongside the flexibility of wireless compatibility.” That is a review finding from that test period, not an independent laboratory measurement.

What the Edifier S1000W is—and who should buy it

The S1000W is an active stereo bookshelf-speaker pair. Amplification is built into the cabinets, so Edifier says you do not need a separate integrated amplifier or receiver. One system can accept Wi‑Fi streams, Bluetooth devices, a television’s optical output, a coaxial digital source and two analog RCA sources. The official product page lists AirPlay 2 as well as Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth support: Edifier S1000W product page.

It is a good fit when you want one pair to handle music streaming, a CD player or streamer, a television and an analog source such as a turntable. It is less suitable if your setup depends on HDMI ARC/eARC, if you have very little depth on the shelf, or if you expect to connect a subwoofer through a dedicated sub-out with an automatic low-pass filter.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Choose it for: a medium-sized room, network streaming, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and flexible optical/coaxial/RCA connectivity.
  • Measure first: the cabinets are unusually deep for ordinary bookshelves and need clearance behind them for rear bass-reflex ports.
  • Plan for extra hardware only when needed: a turntable without line-level output needs a phono preamp; a subwoofer requires a self-powered model and an RCA Y-splitter.

Edifier S1000W specifications

The figures below separate current manufacturer specifications from measurements and descriptions published by SoundGuys and CHOICE. Dimensions and Bluetooth version vary by source, so use the documentation for the exact regional revision you are buying.

Edifier’s current U.S. page says Bluetooth 5.2, while the SoundGuys specification table identifies Bluetooth 5.0. That difference may reflect a regional revision or the unit reviewed; confirm the version shown for your market rather than treating the two numbers as interchangeable. CHOICE’s public dimensions and weight also differ slightly, and its detailed expert rating and test results are available only to members. The manufacturer’s page is therefore the appropriate source for the specifications of a new U.S. purchase, while the SoundGuys dimensions are useful for planning physical placement.

Inputs, streaming and app features

Wi‑Fi, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth

Wi‑Fi is the S1000W’s main advantage over basic powered speakers. SoundGuys found Wi‑Fi, AirPlay 2, Alexa, Tidal and Spotify support useful during its five-day evaluation. Wi‑Fi streaming can leave your phone free for other tasks, while AirPlay 2 integrates with compatible Apple devices. Bluetooth remains convenient for guests or sources that are not on your home network.

The Edifier Home app can select inputs and provides access to supported network services. If you primarily listen from a phone over Bluetooth, you will not need the app for every session; if you want network playback and input switching from one interface, installing it is worthwhile. The app and firmware versions in the SoundGuys test were 3.1.6 and 4.6.430231, respectively, so menus or compatibility may differ in later releases.

Optical, coaxial and RCA

An optical input is the straightforward way to connect most televisions and many game consoles or disc players. Coaxial digital is useful for a source with that output, and the two RCA inputs accommodate line-level devices such as a CD player, DAC, streamer or turntable with its phono stage engaged. Input switching is available in the app and through the supplied remote-control system described by the manufacturer.

How the S1000W sounds

Sound impressions here are SoundGuys’ observations of a supplied review unit, not claims from an independent measurement. The reviewer liked the bass response, connection choices and app. At the default bass and treble control positions, the review describes a sound that emphasizes both ends of the spectrum: bass is prominent and the treble is also forward. That can make pop, electronic music and movies feel energetic, but listeners who prefer a neutral balance may want to reduce one or both controls.

Both bass and treble controls are on the rear panel. They provide useful adjustment, although reaching behind a speaker is inconvenient once the pair is positioned on a shelf. Make the initial tonal adjustment before final placement, then use the app or source volume control for everyday listening. The 5.5-inch mid/bass drivers and the manufacturer’s 45 Hz lower-response figure indicate why the cabinet can deliver substantial low-end without an external subwoofer; those numbers are specifications, not independently verified extension measurements.

Will the S1000W fit on a bookshelf or stand?

Measure the full footprint, not just the front width. SoundGuys lists each cabinet in the pair at approximately 198 mm high, 345 mm wide and 295 mm deep, with a combined weight of 16.77 kg. Edifier’s U.S. page gives 7.6 × 13.6 × 11.6 inches, which is close but not identical. CHOICE lists 40 × 34.7 × 28.1 cm and 16,400 g, another small discrepancy.

Leave breathing room behind each cabinet for its rear bass-reflex port. A shallow bookcase can put the port too close to the wall, and a narrow shelf may not safely support the weight. Keep the pair on a rigid, level surface; avoid placing either speaker where the front edge overhangs the shelf. Stands are practical if your shelves are too shallow, but account for the speakers’ width and the stability of the stand before purchasing.

  • Check shelf width and depth against roughly 13.6 × 11.6 inches per cabinet.
  • Confirm the shelf can support the pair’s approximately 16.77 kg combined weight.
  • Reserve rear clearance for the ports and for access to the bass/treble knobs and cables.
  • Place the tweeters near ear height when seated and keep the left and right speakers at similar distances from your listening position.

Does the Edifier S1000W have HDMI for a TV?

No. The S1000W has no HDMI input, including HDMI ARC/eARC. You can connect a television through optical, and SoundGuys says that optical works with most TVs. HDMI would be more convenient for televisions that support audio return, one-remote volume control or automatic source handling, so its absence matters if you want a soundbar-like TV experience.

Optical TV setup

  1. Connect the TV’s optical output to the S1000W optical input.
  2. Set the TV’s digital-audio output to PCM/stereo if the speakers do not receive a compatible signal; many televisions otherwise default to a surround format these speakers cannot decode.
  3. Select optical on the speakers or in the Edifier Home app, then raise the TV’s output level or use the speaker remote as appropriate.
  4. Disable the TV’s internal speakers if it continues playing through both systems.

Because menus differ by television brand and model, consult the TV manual for the exact PCM and speaker-output labels. If HDMI control and a single remote are essential, choose a powered pair or sound system that explicitly includes HDMI rather than trying to add it with an adapter.

Can you connect a turntable directly?

Only when the turntable provides a line-level output. The S1000W has no built-in phono preamp. A turntable with a switch labeled “phono/line” can be set to line and connected to one of the RCA inputs. A traditional turntable with only a phono output needs a separate phono preamp between the turntable and the speakers.

Connection paths

  • Turntable with built-in preamp: set its output to line, then connect RCA left/right to an S1000W RCA input.
  • Turntable without a preamp: connect turntable RCA cables to an external phono preamp, then connect the preamp’s line output to the speakers.
  • Do not use phono output directly: the level and equalization will be wrong, producing very quiet, thin sound and potentially excess noise.

Grounding requirements depend on the turntable and preamp. Follow those components’ instructions; the S1000W itself does not replace that phono stage.

Can you add a subwoofer?

There is no dedicated wired subwoofer output or built-in low-pass filter. Edifier’s FAQ describes an optional arrangement using a self-powered subwoofer and an RCA Y-splitter. Split the relevant RCA signal so it feeds both the S1000W and the subwoofer. The speakers continue playing bass because there is no low-pass filter in the S1000W’s signal path.

This is an optional expansion, not a required accessory. The pair already includes ordinary analog and digital inputs, and the prominent bass noted by SoundGuys means many rooms will not need more low end. If you add a subwoofer, set its crossover and level by ear, starting conservatively so it complements rather than overwhelms the bookshelf pair.

Step-by-step first-time setup

  1. Plan placement. Confirm cabinet depth, shelf strength, rear-port clearance and access to the rear controls before unpacking.
  2. Connect the speakers to power. Use the supplied power accessories and keep cables clear of the port openings and shelf edge.
  3. Choose your main source. Use Wi‑Fi/AirPlay 2 for network playback, Bluetooth for quick pairing, optical for a TV, coaxial for a compatible digital source, or RCA for line-level analog equipment.
  4. Install the Edifier Home app if desired. Use it for network setup, supported streaming services and input selection. Update firmware only through the app’s offered process and keep the speakers powered during an update.
  5. Set the tonal controls. Start at the default bass and treble positions, then reduce either control if the presentation is too prominent in your room. Make rear-panel adjustments before pushing the speakers into their final position.
  6. Set the source format. For a TV, select PCM/stereo if optical audio is silent or incompatible. For a turntable, verify that the output is line level or insert a phono preamp.
  7. Test every source. Play a network track, pair a Bluetooth device and check each physical input you expect to use. Label or note the active input so switching is quick later.

Common problems and practical fixes

No sound from a television

  • Confirm the optical cable is fully seated at both ends and that the S1000W is set to optical.
  • Change the TV’s digital output from Bitstream, Dolby or surround to PCM/stereo.
  • Turn off the TV’s internal speakers or set its audio output to external/optical.

A turntable sounds very quiet or thin

The turntable is probably sending raw phono output. Engage its built-in preamp and select line, or add an external phono preamp before the RCA input. A normal line-level source should not be connected through a phono-only output.

Wireless playback drops out

  • For Wi‑Fi playback, complete network setup in the Edifier Home app and keep the speakers within reliable router coverage.
  • For Bluetooth, remove an old pairing from the phone and pair again with the intended speaker system.
  • Check whether the app or firmware offers an update; the SoundGuys test used firmware 4.6.430231, so a later version may present different behavior or menus.

Bass or treble is too strong

Use the rear bass and treble controls to reduce the emphasized range described in the SoundGuys review. Recheck placement: a speaker pushed tightly against a wall can produce more boundary reinforcement, while incorrect toe-in can make treble seem uneven between seats.

How it compares with the alternatives mentioned by SoundGuys

These are use-case comparisons, not controlled head-to-head tests. SoundGuys names the Kanto YU6, Klipsch The Fives and Edifier R1280T as alternatives with different priorities.

Model Streaming and inputs Fit and use case What the S1000W offers instead
Kanto YU6 SoundGuys describes it as lacking Wi‑Fi; other input details and current price are not stated in the cited review material. Consider it when network streaming is not important. Built-in Wi‑Fi, AirPlay 2 and app-based network features.
Klipsch The Fives SoundGuys notes that it includes HDMI. Consider it when HDMI TV integration is a priority. Wi‑Fi and AirPlay 2 are central strengths, but HDMI is absent.
Edifier R1280T SoundGuys characterizes it as a smaller, simpler option; streaming details and current price are not stated. Consider it for a compact, basic powered-speaker setup. More extensive wireless streaming and digital-input flexibility, in a substantially larger cabinet.

Compare live regional pricing, dimensions and included accessories before choosing. The cited sources do not establish a controlled sound ranking or universal price advantage for any of these models.

Price, availability and value

Edifier’s U.S. product page displayed $599.99 when the information was retrieved. SoundGuys also refers to earlier approximately $449-era pricing and retailer listings. Those figures are not a guaranteed current street price, and availability varies by country, seller and promotion. Check the live listing for your region before treating the S1000W as a $599.99 or $449 product.

Value depends on how many separate boxes the pair replaces. If you need Wi‑Fi streaming, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and two RCA inputs in one active system, the built-in amplification and connectivity can eliminate a receiver and streamer. If you need HDMI, a phono stage for a traditional turntable or a filtered subwoofer output, budget for different equipment or additional boxes rather than assuming an adapter will provide the same integration.

Strengths and limitations

Strengths Limitations
Amplification is built in; no separate amp required. No HDMI ARC/eARC input.
Wi‑Fi, AirPlay 2 and Bluetooth support. No built-in phono preamp.
Optical, coaxial and two RCA inputs. No dedicated wired subwoofer output or low-pass filter.
SoundGuys liked the bass response, connections and app. Default bass and treble were described as prominent; controls are on the rear.
Manufacturer-rated 35 W × 2 mid/bass and 25 W × 2 treble, with 5.5-inch drivers. Large, deep cabinets require careful shelf or stand planning.

Bottom-line buying checklist

  • Buy the S1000W if you want a single active pair for Wi‑Fi, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth, optical, coaxial and RCA sources.
  • Buy it only after measuring for roughly 13.6-inch width and 11.6-inch depth per cabinet, plus rear-port clearance.
  • Choose another system if HDMI TV control is a must-have.
  • Add a phono preamp only when your turntable lacks a line-level output.
  • Add a self-powered subwoofer and RCA Y-splitter only if you want more low end; the speakers will still play bass because there is no low-pass filter.
  • Verify the live regional price, stock and Bluetooth specification for the exact revision before ordering.
