The Edifier R20BT is an active 2.0 desktop speaker system built for computers and small desks. Its documented strengths are flexible connections—USB-C audio and power, Bluetooth 6.0 with two-device multipoint, and AUX—plus a front headphone connection, ambient lighting, touch controls and app-based customization. Edifier rates the pair at 5 W RMS total (2.5 W per channel), but no independent acoustic measurements are established, so this review treats the published specifications as specifications rather than proof of a particular bass, loudness or clarity profile.

What the Edifier R20BT is

The R20BT is a powered stereo speaker set: one active speaker contains the electronics and amplification, while the second speaker is passive. Edifier describes it as USB-powered, and the Canadian product listing identifies it as a 2.0 system with two drivers. You do not need a separate stereo amplifier for normal operation because amplification is built into the active speaker. The official product page is Edifier’s global R20BT listing.

Each cabinet uses one 2.75-inch (70 mm) full-range driver. The published total output is 2.5 W + 2.5 W RMS, or 5 W RMS for the pair. That is a modest desktop rating intended for near-field listening, not a claim that the speakers can fill a large room at concert levels. The R20BT’s value is in its desk-friendly source switching and convenience features rather than in a documented high-power design.

Connections: USB-C, Bluetooth and AUX

USB-C from a computer

Edifier says the supplied USB cable can carry both power and audio from a compatible computer. The R20BT User Manual V1.00 lists Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supporting USB audio streaming. Connect the cable to the computer and the speaker’s USB-C port, then select the R20BT as the computer’s output device if the operating system does not switch automatically. This arrangement avoids a separate analogue cable and lets the computer provide the source signal and USB power.

USB-C power with another source

The manual distinguishes USB audio from USB-C power. If USB-C is connected to an external power adapter, the speaker can use AUX or Bluetooth as its audio source. That is useful when the speakers sit beside a phone, tablet, games console or another device that is not providing USB audio. The adapter and cable still need to provide suitable power; the manual does not give a universal wattage claim in the cited material, so use a compatible adapter rather than assuming every charger has identical behavior.

AUX analogue input

The official product page says AUX can connect devices with an AUX or RCA output. Use the appropriate 3.5 mm cable or RCA-to-3.5 mm lead, choose the AUX source on the speaker, and control volume from the source and the speaker. AUX is the fallback when a device has no Bluetooth or when you want a direct wired signal.

Bluetooth 6.0 and multipoint

Bluetooth is version 6.0 and uses SBC according to Edifier’s global specification. The manual supports simultaneous connections from two devices, such as a laptop and phone. Multipoint does not mean both devices play at once: stop or pause playback on the currently active device before starting playback on the second.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Connect the first device to the R20BT normally.
  2. Hold the source button for 1.5 seconds to enter pairing mode for the second device.
  3. Choose the R20BT in the second device’s Bluetooth menu and complete pairing.
  4. Reconnect the first device if necessary, then pause playback on one device before starting the other.

For a failed connection, the manual’s sequence is to keep the device within 10 metres, make sure another device is not already occupying the connection, confirm that the speaker is in pairing mode, and restart or reset the speaker if pairing still fails. Range can be reduced by walls and radio interference, so the 10-metre figure is a troubleshooting reference rather than a guaranteed distance in every room.

Headphones and headsets

The 4-pole 3.5 mm communications port accepts wired headphones with or without a microphone. Plugging in headphones mutes the speakers, and the plus and minus controls on the speaker adjust headphone volume. A four-pole headset can therefore be used for calls or gaming without unplugging the speaker system, although the cited manual does not promise compatibility with every headset wiring standard or every application.

Setting up the R20BT on a desk

  1. Place the pair. Put the active speaker within reach of the computer and leave enough room for the USB-C, AUX and headphone connections. Place the passive speaker on the other side of the display so the two drivers form a left-right stereo arrangement.
  2. Choose power and source. For a Windows computer, start with USB-C so one cable carries power and audio. If the source is a phone, tablet or another analogue device, power the speakers through USB-C and use Bluetooth or AUX.
  3. Select the source. Use the speaker’s source control to select USB, Bluetooth or AUX. On a computer, verify that the operating system’s output device is the R20BT rather than its internal speakers or a monitor.
  4. Set a safe starting level. Begin with both the source volume and speaker volume low, start playback, and raise them gradually. The 5 W RMS rating is not a recommended listening level and does not predict how loud your particular desk will sound.
  5. Connect a headset if needed. Insert the 4-pole 3.5 mm plug into the communications port. The speakers should mute; use the plus and minus controls to set headphone level.
  6. Pair a second Bluetooth device only when useful. Follow the 1.5-second source-button procedure above. Pause the first device before starting audio from the second to avoid confusing source behavior.
  7. Configure lighting and profiles. Install Edifier ConneX or TempoHub if you want the app-based customization and sound-profile controls listed by Edifier. The speakers can also be used without an app for basic source selection and volume control.

Lighting, touch controls and app customization

The R20BT includes a built-in ambient lighting system. Edifier also lists three preset sound effects—Classic, Dynamic and Vocal—and app-based sound customization through Edifier ConneX and TempoHub. These are feature controls, not evidence that one preset is objectively better for every listener. Use the profile that suits the content you are playing, and treat any equalization changes as personal preferences.

The product comparison published by Edifier Japan identifies touch controls on the R20BT. Touch operation can be convenient on a desk because it avoids reaching behind a cabinet, but the cited material does not provide a durability rating or a detailed gesture map. The user manual remains the appropriate reference for the current control behavior because Edifier notes that features can change with technical improvements or system upgrades.

How much desk space does it need?

Dimensions vary slightly by regional listing, so do not combine the figures into a single universal measurement. The global page lists each speaker at 83 × 177.2 × 121.1 mm. Edifier Canada lists 83 × 173.2 × 121.2 mm per speaker. The four-millimetre difference in listed height is small, but it matters if you are fitting the speakers under a shelf or beside a monitor stand.

Regional listing Published dimensions Published weight wording
Edifier global 83 × 177.2 × 121.1 mm 1.40 kg net weight
Edifier Canada 83 × 173.2 × 121.2 mm per speaker Approximately 1.40 kg for the pair

Use the dimensions for the market where you are buying. The Canadian figures appear on the Canadian R20BT listing; the global figures are on Edifier’s global page. In practical terms, the cabinets are compact enough for a conventional computer desk, but you still need horizontal room for separation and cable access. Measure the shelf width, the clearance below any monitor, and the depth behind the front edge before ordering.

What the published sound specifications do—and do not—tell you

Edifier publishes a 73 Hz–20 kHz frequency-response range and a ≥85 dB(A) signal-to-noise ratio. Those figures describe the manufacturer’s stated operating range and noise specification; they do not establish how strong the bass sounds at a listening position, whether voices are forward, how the response changes with volume, or how much distortion occurs. The 2.5 W + 2.5 W RMS rating likewise identifies amplifier output under the manufacturer’s rating method, not a measured maximum SPL in your room.

No controlled independent acoustic measurement or named third-party test result is established in the available product material. A YouTube search result identifies a May 9, 2026 unboxing/review with chapters for connection setup, lighting, sound testing, app setup and channel swapping, but the result does not document that video’s conclusions or measurements. It should not be treated as proof of a particular sound signature; the listing is the SASSAN video result.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That evidence boundary is important when deciding whether the R20BT fits your use. The documented case is strongest for a compact, low-power desktop system with several source options and convenience features. If your decision depends on deep bass, very high playback levels, studio accuracy or a measured frequency curve, the published specification alone cannot answer it.

R20BT versus Edifier R19BT

Edifier Japan’s official comparison provides a useful feature-level contrast. It does not establish that either model sounds better, because the comparison is not an independent listening test.

Feature R20BT R19BT
Output 5 W RMS 4 W RMS
Frequency response 73 Hz–20 kHz 80 Hz–19 kHz
Computer input USB-C USB-A
Bluetooth Version 6.0 Version 5.3
Bluetooth multipoint Included Not included in the comparison
Ambient lighting Included Not included in the comparison
Controls Touch controls Not included in the comparison
App support Included Not included in the comparison
Microphone support The R20BT manual confirms a 4-pole headset connection Not stated in the cited comparison

The comparison is on Edifier Japan’s R20BT/R19BT page. Choose the R20BT over the R19BT when USB-C, two-device Bluetooth, lighting, touch controls or app customization are deciding factors. Choose based on a different priority only if those features are unnecessary and the R19BT’s published input and output figures better match your existing setup. Neither table column is a substitute for an independent sound comparison.

Do you need an external amplifier?

No external stereo amplifier is required for the R20BT’s intended use. It is an active system with amplification in the powered speaker, and Edifier’s Canadian listing describes it as ready to operate from its built-in electronics. You supply power through USB-C, then feed audio over USB-C, Bluetooth or AUX. An external amplifier would add a device the system was not designed to require and would not turn the published 5 W RMS rating into a higher verified output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

An external DAC or headphone amplifier is a separate question. The R20BT already accepts digital USB audio and Bluetooth, while the 3.5 mm port is intended for headphones or a headset. Add another device only for a specific workflow—such as a computer that cannot expose USB audio or a separate headphone chain—not as a prerequisite for normal speaker operation.

Price and availability depend on region and date

Published prices are snapshots, not a universal current price. Edifier Japan’s comparison listed a sale price of ¥7,980, while a Canadian store result showed CAD $89.99 and “in stock” at crawl time. Taxes, shipping, promotions and inventory can change, and neither figure should be presented as today’s worldwide price. Check the official store for your market immediately before purchase.

Canada CAD $89.99; in stock Canadian store search result at crawl time; availability can change.

Common problems and fixes

No sound over USB-C

  • Confirm the cable is connected to the computer’s data-capable USB port and the speaker’s USB-C port.
  • In the operating system’s sound settings, select the R20BT as the output device.
  • Check that the speaker is on the USB source rather than Bluetooth or AUX.
  • Try another USB port or cable if the computer supplies power but does not detect an audio device.

Bluetooth will not pair

  • Move the source within 10 metres and reduce obstructions.
  • Disconnect or disable Bluetooth on another device that may already be connected.
  • Hold the source button for 1.5 seconds to enter the second-device pairing procedure when using multipoint.
  • Restart the speaker and source; if the problem persists, follow the reset instructions in the manual.

Speakers are silent after plugging in headphones

This is expected behavior: the manual says the speakers mute when a wired headset or headphones are connected. Raise headphone volume with the speaker’s plus and minus controls and check the source application’s output setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AUX works but Bluetooth does not

Use AUX as a temporary wired connection, then remove the AUX source from the selection path, confirm pairing mode and ensure no other Bluetooth device has taken the connection. The manual’s troubleshooting order is to verify distance and competing connections before restarting or resetting.

Who the R20BT suits

  • USB-C desktop users: The single-cable computer connection is the clearest fit when your computer supports USB audio.
  • People switching between devices: Two-device Bluetooth multipoint is useful for a laptop-and-phone desk, provided you pause one source before starting the other.
  • Shared desks and compact work areas: The small cabinets, ambient lighting and touch controls emphasize convenience and visible desk presentation.
  • Headset users: The 4-pole port lets you mute the speakers and use a wired headphone or microphone headset without changing the whole audio setup.

It is a less certain choice when your priority is a documented studio-flat response, independent distortion measurements, cinema-scale output or room-filling bass. The available evidence does not establish those outcomes.

Important specification caveat

Edifier’s R20BT User Manual V1.00 states: "For the need of technical improvement and system upgrade, information and specifications contained herein may be slightly different from actual product." The manual says the actual product prevails if there is a difference. Check the manual and the regional product page supplied with your unit when a connector, dimension or control detail is critical: R20BT User Manual V1.00.

Verdict

The Edifier R20BT is best understood as a feature-rich compact desktop system rather than a proven audiophile monitor. Its documented package is unusually practical for a small desk: USB-C audio and power, AUX, Bluetooth 6.0 with two-device multipoint, a headset connection, ambient lighting, touch controls and app support, all in an active 5 W RMS stereo pair. Buy it when those connection and convenience features solve a real desk problem. Treat the 73 Hz–20 kHz response, output rating and SNR as manufacturer specifications, and do not infer a particular sound quality until you can audition the speakers or obtain measurements relevant to your setup.
