Edible insects can supply protein and micronutrients, and one life-cycle assessment found environmental advantages for mealworms over several animal proteins on some measures. But there is no evidence-backed universal winner over chicken, beef, or plant-based protein. The result depends on the insect species and product, what it is compared with, and how nutrition and environmental impacts are measured.

That distinction matters: dried insect powder, cooked chicken, beef, beans, and a formulated plant-based product are not interchangeable comparison units. A fair choice requires looking at the actual serving, protein quality, production system, and impact categories—not just a headline protein figure or a claim that insects use fewer resources.

What counts as an edible-insect protein?

“Edible insects” describes many species and products, not a single food with a standard nutritional profile. A whole insect, a dried powder, a defatted flour, and an extracted protein ingredient can differ in composition and in how they are used. Species, life stage, feed substrate, preparation, and processing all matter. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) describes insects broadly as sources of protein, amino acids, vitamins, fatty acids, and micronutrients, but that overview is not a nutritional ranking of every insect product.

The same specificity is needed for the alternatives. Chicken and beef vary by cut and preparation; “plant-based protein” might mean beans, tofu, or a formulated meat alternative. A comparison that does not identify the actual foods cannot establish which provides more protein per realistic serving, which has the better amino-acid profile, or which has the smaller environmental footprint.

For a useful comparison, first name the products and serving bases. Then check whether the nutritional figures refer to foods in comparable states—for example, cooked foods against cooked foods, or dry ingredients against dry ingredients. Comparing 100 grams of dry insect powder with 100 grams of cooked meat or legumes can mislead because the products and their moisture content differ. If matched composition data are unavailable, a precise ranking is not justified.

How to compare nutrition fairly

Protein quantity is only the starting point

A product’s protein figure does not by itself show how much digestible protein a person gets from an ordinary serving. The OECD’s 2022 report says insect-protein digestibility depends on species and is generally lower than meat protein. Protein estimates can also be affected by chitin, a major component of insect exoskeletons. EFSA explains that when protein is inferred from nitrogen content, chitin can cause the true protein level in some insect formulations to be overestimated. In EFSA’s words, “Formulations from insects may be high in protein, although the true protein levels can be overestimated when the substance chitin, a major component of insects’ exoskeleton, is present.”

That is a measurement caution, not a finding that insect foods contain no meaningful protein. EFSA food scientist Ermolaos Ververis, who coordinated the first adopted opinion on insects as novel food, said in 2021: “Insects are complex organisms, which makes characterising the composition of insect-derived food products a challenge.” The practical implication is to use product-specific composition information and be alert to how the manufacturer or study arrived at its protein number.

Protein quality also depends on amino-acid composition and digestibility, not just total quantity. FAO’s overview identifies amino acids among the nutrients insects can provide, but that broad statement does not show that a particular insect product matches a particular meat or plant food on a per-serving basis. The OECD report’s finding that digestibility varies by species is another reason not to transfer a result from one insect or formulation to all insect foods.

Compare the food you will actually eat

Use a realistic serving and identify whether the product is whole or processed. Dried insect powder and defatted flour are concentrated ingredients; they are not necessarily eaten in the same amount or way as a cooked cut of chicken, beef, beans, tofu, or a plant-based meat alternative. Preparation and formulation matter too: the nutrition of a finished product cannot be inferred from the insect species alone.

For each named product, look for:

  • Protein per serving: check the serving size and whether the food is dry, cooked, or ready to eat.
  • Protein measurement: note whether the figure is a direct measurement or an estimate that may be affected by chitin in an insect ingredient.
  • Amino-acid quality and digestibility: use product- and species-relevant data where available; do not assume that equal protein grams mean equal usable protein.
  • Micronutrients and fat profile: compare the actual products rather than assuming all insects, meats, or plant alternatives have the same profile.
  • Ingredients and processing: a formulated product may combine several ingredients, so its label describes the product more accurately than a general category claim.

The available evidence does not provide a matched nutrition table for a named insect, chicken, beef, and plant-based product. It therefore cannot support a precise four-way ranking by protein, digestibility, amino acids, micronutrients, or fat. A label or database entry for one product can answer a product-level question, but it should not be presented as a category-wide result.

What the environmental evidence says—and what it does not

The mealworm life-cycle assessment is a specific example

A frequently cited result comes from Oonincx and de Boer’s 2012 life-cycle assessment of mealworm production, summarized in FAO’s 2013 report Edible insects: future prospects for food and feed security. For the mealworm production chain they studied and a protein-based comparison, FAO reports lower greenhouse-gas emissions and land use than for the conventional animal sources examined. The same summary says energy use was lower than beef, comparable with pork, and slightly higher than chicken and milk.

Those findings are useful evidence that an insect protein system can compare favorably with some animal-protein systems on selected measures. They are not a current average for insect farming, a result for every mealworm product, or a comparison with every plant-based food. Nor does a favorable result for greenhouse gases and land use establish that the system is best on energy, water, or every other environmental impact. The species, production chain, comparison group, and impact category belong with the claim.

Feed-efficiency figures are not a full life-cycle comparison

FAO’s edible-insect overview states that crickets need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep, and twice less than pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein. Treat this as a broad overview statement about feed needed for protein production—not as a complete assessment of greenhouse-gas emissions or total environmental impact for every farm. Feed use alone does not capture processing, storage, production energy, waste management, or other impacts.

Insect-versus-plant results are not established here

It is not sound to conclude that insects are more sustainable than plant-based protein simply because insects can be efficient compared with livestock. The actual plant food or product and the actual insect production system need to be compared under the same system boundary and for a relevant nutritional function. The sources discussed here do not establish a single fair ranking between insect foods and plant proteins.

That limitation is especially important when broad labels hide different products. A whole insect food and a plant-based meat alternative may have different ingredient and processing chains; beans or tofu are different comparison choices again. The answer for one pairing cannot automatically be generalized to the whole plant-based category.

How to judge an environmental comparison

Life-cycle assessments can answer different questions depending on what they include and what unit they use. A comparison per kilogram of product may tell a different story from one per amount of protein delivered. A production-only boundary can omit impacts associated with processing, storage, or waste management. A climate result cannot stand in for land, water, energy, resource use, nutrient enrichment, or acidification.

A 2016 review of insect-production life-cycle assessments found the available literature small and heterogeneous. It recommended identifying the species and life stage, using multiple functional units—including nutritional units—collecting empirical farm data, selecting realistic alternatives, including relevant processes such as processing and storage, and evaluating multiple impacts. A 2022 systematic review likewise found relatively few environmental studies of insect foods in its included literature and distinguished production using waste feed from production using non-waste feed.

When reading a sustainability claim, ask these questions before accepting a winner:

  • Which insect and life stage? A result for mealworms does not automatically apply to crickets or another species.
  • What was the feed substrate? Production using waste feed is not necessarily comparable with production using non-waste feed.
  • What alternative was tested? Beef, chicken, pork, milk, beans, and a formulated plant-based product are different comparators.
  • What is the functional unit? Check whether the study compares product mass, protein, or another nutritional unit.
  • What processes are inside the boundary? Look for production, processing, storage, and waste management rather than assuming they are included.
  • Which impact categories were measured? Greenhouse gases and land use do not answer questions about energy, water, or other impacts.
  • Where and how was it produced? Production location and farm conditions affect whether a study represents a product available to a particular consumer.

If a product claim does not identify enough of these details, treat it as a limited claim rather than a universal verdict. The 2012 mealworm assessment is a concrete case with a defined scope, not proof of a market-wide advantage for all insect foods.

Safety, allergies, and labels

EFSA says potential biological and chemical hazards depend on production methods, feed substrate, harvest stage, insect species, and later processing. It also notes limited data about the transfer of some chemical contaminants from different substrates. These points do not mean all insect foods are unsafe; they do mean that safety cannot be inferred solely from the fact that an insect species has been assessed for a particular use.

Allergy is a practical issue for consumers. EFSA describes possible allergy to insect proteins, cross-reactivity, and residual allergens from feed. Its 2023 material discusses the EU authorization context for house-cricket powder and a label warning for people with known allergies to crustaceans, molluscs, and dust mites. That warning is specific to the product and jurisdiction described; it should not be generalized as identical labeling everywhere.

Check the actual package’s ingredient and allergen information, including for insect-derived ingredients in a formulated food. Anyone with a known relevant allergy should follow appropriate medical advice rather than relying on a general statement about insects. Label rules and authorized uses can vary by jurisdiction, so the package and local food rules are more useful than a generic claim about all insect products.

A practical way to choose between these foods

  1. Decide what question you are asking. If the priority is protein per meal, compare a realistic serving and digestibility where data are available. If the priority is environmental impact, choose the impact categories that matter to you rather than relying on a single “sustainable” label.
  2. Name the actual options. Compare a specific insect product with a specific chicken or beef product and a defined plant food or formulated alternative. Avoid treating each category as nutritionally or environmentally uniform.
  3. Read nutrition information on a comparable basis. Note serving size, preparation state, and whether an insect ingredient is whole, powdered, defatted, or extracted. Consider the chitin-related limitation when interpreting protein inferred from nitrogen.
  4. Look for quality data beyond total protein. Check amino-acid and digestibility information when published for the relevant species and product. Compare micronutrients and fat profile using matched product information, not category assumptions.
  5. Evaluate the scope of environmental claims. Identify the species, feed substrate, location, functional unit, study boundaries, comparator, and impact categories. Give a study-specific result no broader reach than its methods support.
  6. Review ingredients and allergen information. Consider the product’s jurisdiction-specific label and your own allergy history before choosing a food.

If a seller or article offers a simple winner but does not say which products, serving basis, production system, or environmental measure it used, the claim leaves out the details needed to judge it. A careful comparison may end with a conditional answer: one product looks preferable for a particular measure, while another better fits a nutrition, ingredient, or allergy consideration.

What can be concluded today

Edible insects are a potential source of protein and micronutrients, but their nutritional value must be assessed by species, product, and preparation. Chitin can make some protein estimates appear higher than the true protein content, and digestibility varies. On the environmental side, the studied mealworm production chain showed advantages over several conventional animal sources for greenhouse-gas emissions and land use, but not lower energy use than every comparator. That result does not settle comparisons with all meats, all insect products, or plant-based protein.

The most defensible answer is therefore product-specific: compare realistic servings and protein quality for nutrition, and matched life-cycle evidence across several impact categories for environmental claims. When those matched data are missing, there is no sound basis for declaring insects, chicken, beef, or plant-based protein the overall winner.
