For most pilots moving into RC jets, an electric ducted fan (EDF) is the more accessible starting point. It uses a rechargeable battery and an electric motor, while a model gas turbine compresses air, burns fuel and produces hot exhaust. EDF usually lowers the entry barrier, but the right choice depends on the specific aircraft, your flying experience, available support and the kind of sound and operating experience you want. There is no universal speed or thrust winner: compare complete, installed aircraft configurations rather than propulsion labels.
EDF and model turbines do fundamentally different jobs
The two systems can propel aircraft that look similar, but they are not two versions of the same engine. An EDF is an electric motor driving a multi-bladed impeller inside a duct. The impeller draws air through the intake and accelerates it rearward through a thrust tube. The battery, motor, fan, electronic speed controller and duct are one electric propulsion system.
A model gas turbine follows the same broad cycle as a full-size jet engine. A compressor raises the pressure of incoming air, fuel is mixed with that air in a combustion chamber and ignited, and the resulting gases pass through a turbine before leaving as exhaust that produces thrust. It is a fuel-burning miniature turbine, not an electric fan hidden in a duct.

That distinction answers a common question: an EDF can look and sound turbine-like, but it does not burn fuel. Its thrust comes from a motor-driven impeller. A turbine’s thrust comes from combustion and expanding exhaust gases.

How an EDF produces thrust
Motor and impeller
An EDF’s electric motor spins an impeller with many blades. The fan sits inside a shaped duct that guides air from the intake to the outlet. The duct and thrust tube are not cosmetic: their dimensions, transitions and alignment influence how efficiently the fan can move air.
Battery is part of the engine system
Unlike a glow or gas-powered model that carries fuel, an EDF carries its power source in the flight battery. RC Airplane World notes that EDF units draw high current and generally require high-capacity, high-discharge LiPo packs. The correct pack is model-specific. Check the aircraft manual for cell count and voltage, connector, physical dimensions and required discharge capability before buying or charging a battery.
A battery that fits the compartment can still be unsuitable if its voltage is wrong, its connector does not match, or its discharge rating cannot support the system’s current demand. Treat the battery specification as part of the aircraft’s propulsion specification rather than as a generic accessory.

Efflux RC cautions that its bench-test thrust data may be 5–10% lower after an EDF is installed in an airframe, because the aircraft’s ducting introduces losses. That is a supplier’s warning, not an independently verified rule for every EDF. It does show why a bare-fan test and a flying model are not interchangeable measurements.
How a model gas turbine produces thrust
Compressor, combustion and turbine stages
AT Models describes a model turbine as a system in which the compressor draws in and compresses air, fuel is added and ignited in the combustion chamber, and the hot gases drive the turbine before exiting as thrust-producing exhaust. The process is continuous while the engine runs, rather than a battery sending current directly to a motor.
What that means in practice
A turbine installation requires the engine and the aircraft’s fuel and control systems to be compatible. Startup, operation and shutdown follow the engine maker’s procedure, and the airframe must be designed for that engine’s installation requirements. The exact parts list is therefore model- and engine-dependent; a generic turbine checklist cannot safely replace the current manuals.

Which system is easier to enter?
Why EDF is usually the lower-barrier route
RC Airplane World presents EDF as a more affordable gateway to turbine models. A retailer comparison also describes EDF as easier to fly and turbine jets as more demanding. Those descriptions are useful directionally: an EDF avoids a fuel-burning engine and can be supplied in trainer-oriented packages with stabilization aids.
They are not a promise that every EDF is a beginner aircraft. A fast, heavy or highly loaded EDF jet can still require prior experience, a suitable runway and disciplined setup. Some Horizon models, including the Habu STS, have been marketed with beginner-oriented stabilization, but that feature does not make every EDF safe for a first flight. Confirm the exact flight modes, recommended skill level and setup procedure in the current aircraft manual.
Why turbines generally require more experience
The reviewed references recommend substantial experience before moving to a turbine. The reasons are practical: the pilot must manage a more involved propulsion installation as well as a jet airframe, and mistakes in preparation or operation can have consequences beyond a discharged battery. Instruction from an experienced turbine pilot and compliance with the engine and model manuals are sensible prerequisites.
Use the aircraft, not the label, as the final test
- Read the manufacturer’s stated skill level and required control setup.
- Check whether stabilization is included, optional or absent, and understand what it does and does not control.
- Compare the aircraft’s size, loading, landing speed and runway needs with your existing experience.
- Ask whether you have qualified help for first assembly, power-system checks and maiden flight.
Sound, realism and the full-size-jet experience
Sound is one of the strongest reasons experienced hobbyists choose a turbine. The retailer source describes turbine sound and feel as more realistic and closer to a full-size jet. An EDF can produce a convincing turbine-like whine, but the sound is generated by an electric motor and fan rather than combustion.
These are qualitative descriptions, not measured sound-level or realism scores. A pilot who values immediate electric operation, a quieter field experience or simpler energy logistics may prefer EDF even when a turbine sounds more authentic. A pilot whose priority is the sensation and acoustic character of a combustion jet may accept the additional complexity of a turbine.
Do not pick a winner from speed or thrust claims alone
No matched EDF-versus-turbine test was established
The available references do not provide controlled tests of equivalent EDF and turbine aircraft. They do not establish a category-wide winner for top speed, static thrust, flight time, noise or operating cost. A claim that “EDF is faster” or “turbines always make more thrust” would go beyond the evidence.

Compare complete configurations
For a meaningful comparison, record the named aircraft, propulsion unit, battery or fuel setup, installed mass, ducting, control settings and measurement method. A bench result from an exposed fan is not directly comparable with an installed result from a different airframe. Installation losses, inlet shape and thrust-tube geometry can change what reaches the aircraft.
When a manufacturer publishes several numbers, identify whether each is a bench test, an installed test or a flight estimate. Keep the qualification beside the number when making your decision; do not turn one model’s result into a promise about the entire propulsion category.
EDF setup: a model-specific process
The following sequence is a decision and verification workflow, not a substitute for the aircraft manual.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Identify the complete power system. Record the EDF unit, motor, electronic speed controller and the battery cell count specified for the aircraft.
- Match the battery physically and electrically. Verify voltage, connector, dimensions and high-current discharge requirement. A pack that only fits physically is not necessarily compatible.
- Inspect the duct path. Confirm that the intake, fan housing and thrust tube are aligned and unobstructed. The installed system, not a bare fan, determines the aircraft’s delivered thrust.
- Follow the control and stabilization setup. Program the transmitter and receiver exactly as the manual states. If stabilization is provided, learn its modes and limits before the first flight.
- Secure the battery and check balance. Use the aircraft’s specified restraint and center-of-gravity instructions; do not improvise a location simply to make a connector reach.
- Perform the manufacturer’s ground checks. Verify the throttle response, failsafe behavior, fan rotation and control directions in the order specified by the manual.
- Plan the first flight around the airframe. Select a runway and conditions appropriate to the model, and use an experienced helper if the aircraft’s skill rating calls for one.
Turbine setup: what must be confirmed before flying
- Choose a documented engine-airframe combination. Confirm that the aircraft is designed for the selected turbine and that the engine maker’s installation requirements are met.
- Read the current engine and aircraft manuals together. Resolve differences in mounting, fuel-system routing, controls, startup and shutdown procedures before assembling the model.
- Install the complete support system. Use the fuel, control and starting components specified for that engine rather than assuming EDF hardware can be reused.
- Check control integration and failsafe behavior. Verify throttle, receiver power and shutdown behavior on the ground with the engine maker’s procedure.
- Obtain experienced supervision. The reviewed references position turbine jets for experienced pilots; arrange instruction for setup and the maiden flight if you are new to turbines.
- Document the configuration. Keep the engine model, fuel arrangement, control settings and any stabilization settings with the aircraft records so later maintenance does not create an unknown combination.
Cost and ownership: what can and cannot be generalized
The references consistently frame EDF as more affordable and turbines as more costly, but they do not establish matched prices, recurring operating costs or flight-time figures. Prices vary by aircraft size, included electronics, engine, battery, charger, fuel system, replacement parts, region and date.
For an EDF, budget for the aircraft’s specified high-current LiPo pack and a charger appropriate to that pack, plus model-specific replacement parts. For a turbine, budget for the engine and the aircraft’s required fuel and support equipment. Do not compare the purchase price of an airframe-only EDF with a complete turbine package and call the difference a propulsion cost.
Before committing, write down the complete installed configuration and every required item. If a seller or manual does not state a value, treat it as “not stated” and request clarification rather than filling the gap with a category average.

Decision framework: choose the system that fits your situation
| If your priority is… | More likely fit | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| A lower-barrier introduction to jets | EDF | References describe it as more accessible; select a model whose skill rating matches your experience. |
| Learning turbine operation later | EDF first, then turbine | RC Airplane World presents EDF as a gateway, but progress should be based on demonstrated aircraft and setup skills. |
| Combustion-jet sound and feel | Model gas turbine | The retailer describes a closer full-size-jet experience; this is qualitative, not a measured performance claim. |
| Battery-based operation | EDF | The propulsion system uses a rechargeable flight battery, with voltage, connector, dimensions and discharge requirements set by the model. |
| A recommendation based only on maximum speed | Neither without model data | No matched comparison establishes a universal speed winner. |
| A recommendation based only on static thrust | Neither without installed data | Ducting and airframe losses can change the result; compare like-for-like measurements. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling an EDF a small turbine
An EDF is electrically driven. Describing it as a combustion engine can lead to the wrong expectations about fuel, startup and maintenance. Use “electric ducted fan” for the system and “model gas turbine” for the fuel-burning engine.
Buying a battery by connector alone
Connector type does not prove that voltage, size or discharge capability is correct. Check all four against the aircraft and EDF documentation.
Applying a bench-thrust number to a finished model
Efflux RC’s 5–10% caution illustrates the issue: installation can reduce measured thrust, and different duct layouts produce different losses. Treat a bench number as a test condition, not a guaranteed flight result.
Assuming stabilization removes the need for skill
Stabilization can be part of a trainer-oriented package, but it does not change the model’s size, energy, landing requirements or the need for correct setup. Read the exact system’s limits and practice its modes before relying on them.
Comparing incomplete packages
An EDF airframe, battery and charger and a turbine airframe, engine and fuel support system are not equivalent shopping lists. Compare complete installed configurations and identify anything the manufacturer lists separately.

Using a category reputation instead of the manual
“EDF is easy” and “turbines are difficult” are useful starting points, not approval to skip documentation. The aircraft and power-system manuals determine compatibility, controls and operating procedure.

- Do you have an experienced pilot or instructor for the first setup and flight?
- Does your flying site accommodate the model’s runway, noise and operating requirements?
FAQ
Is an EDF a real jet engine?
It is a jet-style propulsion unit, but not a combustion turbine. An electric motor spins a ducted impeller; a model gas turbine compresses air, burns fuel and expels combustion gases.
Can a beginner fly an EDF jet?
Some EDF models are marketed with beginner-oriented stabilization, while many other jets require prior experience. Check the exact aircraft’s skill rating, configuration and manual rather than treating EDF as automatically suitable for beginners.
Will a turbine always be faster or stronger than an EDF?
No category-wide answer is established by the available comparisons. Speed and thrust depend on the named aircraft, installed power system, mass and measurement method.
What battery should I buy for an EDF?
Buy only the pack that matches the aircraft manual’s cell count and voltage, connector, physical dimensions and high-current discharge requirement. The correct specification is model-specific.
Why can installed EDF thrust be lower than a test-bench figure?
The aircraft’s intake, duct and thrust tube can introduce losses. Efflux RC warns that its bench figures may be 5–10% lower after installation; that supplier observation should not be generalized to every EDF.
