Short answer: An Eclair HTTP API is a high-impact control surface, but the specific browser exploit described by this headline has not been independently identified in the available advisories. Operators should nevertheless keep the API off untrusted networks, enforce strong HTTP Basic authentication, and upgrade to Eclair 0.14.0 or later. That version covers both the preimage-theft issue fixed in 0.12.0 and the denial-of-service issues disclosed against 0.13.1 and earlier.
What is—and is not—confirmed about the browser attack
The headline-specific advisory is unresolved
The exact advisory describing a malicious website sending commands to an Eclair node was not identified. Consequently, there is no verified fixed version that can be attributed specifically to that browser claim, and neither the exploit mechanism nor its prerequisites should be presented as established fact.
What is documented is enough to justify immediate hardening. Eclair exposes an HTTP API that accepts form data, returns JSON or simple strings, and uses HTTP Basic authentication with a configured password. The API includes state-changing POST methods such as /connect, /disconnect, and /sendonionmessage. Any service that can reach an authenticated endpoint with those capabilities should be treated as a node-control interface, not as a harmless status page.

Why browser reachability matters even without a confirmed exploit
A website cannot normally control a node that is reachable only from a protected management network. Risk rises when the API is published on an internet-facing address, exposed through a browser-accessible host, or given credentials that can be used from an untrusted environment. The documentation does not establish a particular cross-site request or browser-bypass technique, so operators should not assume that the reported attack works in every deployment. Publicly reachable API authentication is still an avoidable exposure.

Verified Eclair security fixes
Two separate disclosures provide concrete upgrade guidance. They should not be conflated with the unverified browser-attack report.
| Issue | Affected versions | Attack surface and impact | Recommended fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preimage-extraction vulnerability | Eclair 0.11.0 and earlier | Force-close monitoring checked only HTLCs in the node’s local commitment. An attacker could exploit an older commitment state if the preimage was missed, potentially stealing funds. The disclosure describes a Lightning-protocol attack rather than a browser/API exploit. | Eclair 0.12.0 or later |
| Two denial-of-service vulnerabilities | Eclair 0.13.1 and earlier | Peer-access requirements and the precise failure modes are not stated in the September 2026 disclosure summary. The impact reported is loss of availability. | Eclair v0.14.0 or later |
| Browser-to-HTTP-API command claim | Not established | The headline alleges that a malicious website could cause API commands to run. The exact advisory, prerequisites, affected range, and impact have not been independently confirmed. | No browser-specific version can be verified; use the current supported release and secure the API as an administrative interface. |
The preimage disclosure was published by Matt Morehouse on September 23, 2025. It notes that the vulnerable code had existed for a long time; reproducing a response from Bastien Teinturier, Morehouse wrote: “This code seems to have been there from the very beginning of eclair, and has not been updated or challenged since then.” That observation explains why version history matters: upgrading only to 0.12.0 addresses the preimage bug, but not the later DoS findings.

What Eclair operators should do now
1. Upgrade past both verified affected ranges
- Record the version of the Eclair process that is actually running, rather than relying on the version of an installer or an old package file.
- Upgrade to Eclair v0.14.0 or later through your normal release and deployment procedure. This is the recommendation in the September 2026 DoS disclosure and is later than the 0.12.0 fix for preimage extraction.
- Restart the service as required by your deployment, then verify the running version and confirm that channels and wallet state load normally.
- If you operated 0.11.0 or earlier, review force-close activity and channel events after upgrading. The preimage issue could result in fund loss when an older commitment state was exploited; upgrading prevents the vulnerable logic but cannot reverse a completed theft.
2. Keep the API on a private management path
- Bind the API only to an interface or address that needs administrative access.
- Use host firewalls, security groups, or an equivalent network control to block unsolicited internet access.
- Do not place the endpoint on a page, reverse proxy, or browser-facing origin used by untrusted users unless you have a specific, reviewed reason to do so.
- If remote administration is necessary, provide access through a private network or VPN rather than exposing the API directly.
These controls are prudent because the API has state-changing operations; they are hardening measures derived from the documented interface, not evidence that a particular browser exploit has been reproduced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3. Protect HTTP Basic authentication
- Set a long, unique password and rotate it if the API may have been exposed or logged.
- Never put the password in client-side JavaScript, a shared browser profile, a public configuration file, or a chat transcript.
- When API traffic crosses a network, use a TLS-protected connection or a trusted private tunnel. Basic authentication sends reusable credentials with requests; without transport protection, an eavesdropper could capture them.
- Check proxy and access logs for unexpected requests to
/connect,/disconnect,/sendonionmessage, and other POST endpoints.
4. Treat unexpected commands as an incident
If you see an unexplained connection, disconnection, or onion-message request, isolate the API from the network, preserve relevant logs, rotate the API password, and inspect the host for unauthorized changes. Then upgrade before restoring remote access. Do not assume that a successful authentication event proves the browser claim; it only shows that the control surface was used.

Can a malicious website control my Eclair node?
The accurate answer depends on reachability and authentication:
| Deployment condition | What can be concluded |
|---|---|
| API bound to localhost or an isolated management network, with no route from user browsers | A random website has no direct network path to the API. This does not remove host-level threats, but it sharply limits browser-originated access. |
| API reachable from a browser-accessible network and protected by a password unknown to the site | Exposure is still undesirable. The available material does not establish whether the reported browser technique can bypass browser controls or authentication. |
| API exposed publicly, or credentials available to untrusted browser code | Assume the node-control surface is at risk. Restrict access immediately, rotate credentials, review logs, and upgrade. |
In other words, “the API requires Basic auth” is not the same as “the API is safe to publish on the internet.” Authentication is one layer; network isolation, transport protection, credential handling, and monitoring are additional layers.

How the verified issues differ from the browser claim
The preimage bug and the DoS disclosure concern Lightning-node protocol behavior and availability. The headline’s claim concerns an HTTP/browser path to administrative commands. Their attack surfaces, required access, and outcomes are different:

- DoS vulnerabilities: availability problems reported for Eclair 0.13.1 and earlier; the September 2026 disclosure recommends 0.14.0 or later.
Keeping these categories separate prevents a misleading conclusion that 0.12.0 necessarily fixes every Eclair security problem or that either documented Lightning-protocol issue proves the browser scenario.

Production architecture is defense in depth, not a patch substitute
ACINQ describes Eclair as a Scala/JVM Lightning implementation and says its production design uses AWS Nitro Enclaves and a Ledger Nano for some authentication operations. Those components illustrate a defense-in-depth architecture for protecting signing and authentication paths; they are not stated requirements for every Eclair operator and do not replace upgrading or restricting the HTTP API.
ACINQ also warns that “A Lightning node is essentially a hot wallet, a class of software known to be a prime target for hackers.” That is the right operational baseline: minimize reachable services, keep credentials out of browsers, patch promptly, and assume that an exposed control endpoint deserves the same care as wallet infrastructure.
Bottom line for October 2026
The browser-attack headline should be read cautiously because its primary advisory and fixed release have not been verified. The actionable version guidance is not ambiguous: Eclair 0.11.0 and earlier require the 0.12.0 preimage fix, Eclair 0.13.1 and earlier are covered by the later DoS disclosure, and operators should run Eclair v0.14.0 or later. Regardless of the browser claim, keep the HTTP API private, protect its Basic-auth credentials, use encrypted transport for remote administration, and investigate any unexpected state-changing requests.
