EchoNote is described as a Linux desktop app that records a spoken thought and tries to organize it as a task, reminder, idea, or reference note. Its author says voice, notes, and AI processing stay on the computer after the app’s models have been downloaded—but the published testing account is limited, so treat that as a project claim rather than independently verified performance.
What EchoNote does
EchoNote is intended for people who want to save a thought without stopping to type. Press Alt + Shift + Space to start and stop capture, configure a different key combination, or use the app’s button. The app then attempts to interpret the recording and file it as a task, reminder, idea, or note.
For example, the project author describes saying that they need to submit a challenge at 10 the next morning, with the intention that EchoNote turn it into a reminder. That example illustrates the workflow; it is not evidence that the app reliably understands every recording or creates calendar alerts.

How its local-first design works
The author describes speech recognition using whisper.cpp and a locally run Gemma model through llama.cpp for understanding and classification. The app is built with Electron, React, and TypeScript, and uses SQLite for its data. According to the author, voice, notes, and AI processing remain on the computer. The models must be downloaded during setup; the author says the app does not need an internet connection after that download.

That description supports calling EchoNote local-first, but it does not independently verify what a current released binary sends or stores. The author reports an offline test and one intermittent failure that could not be reproduced. If keeping recordings on-device is essential, check the project’s current documentation and code before relying on the claim.
What is known about testing—and what is not
The author says they tested EchoNote personally, including with synthetic speech, but had not yet shown it to friends. They also report that real voice input, physically pressing the GNOME shortcut, and Hindi or Hinglish had not been tested. The published account gives no independently published accuracy statistic or formal user study. Consequently, it does not establish how well EchoNote handles ordinary speech, accents, background noise, or repeated capture attempts.

One report in the supplied reader context describes the capture modal appearing, disappearing, and appearing again. The cited project page does not document that behavior or provide a fix. If you encounter it, note your Linux desktop, shortcut configuration, and steps to reproduce, then check the project’s issue tracker or contact its maintainer; do not assume a particular shortcut or setting resolves it.
Linux availability and installation
The author’s page points to a v1.0.5 release and describes RPM and DEB packages plus an AppImage. The present availability of that release, and whether it remains the latest version, are not established here. The source does not say whether EchoNote appears in GNOME Software or another Linux software center. Not seeing it listed there does not establish that the app is unavailable; the page instead points readers toward downloadable Linux package formats. Confirm that a package matches your distribution and architecture before installing it.

EchoNote may suit a Linux user who wants a quick voice-capture workflow and is comfortable downloading local AI models and evaluating an early project. It is a less certain choice if you need proven speech accuracy, reliable physical shortcut behavior, support for a particular language, or independently verified privacy guarantees. The source identifies the project as MIT-licensed and links to its repository, but the repository could not be independently checked for this article.
