Echo voice calling is Amazon Alexa Communication used through supported Echo devices and the Alexa app. It lets you call another Alexa Communication user; in some countries, it can also place calls to supported phone numbers. Drop In is a separate, optional intercom-style feature—not simply another name for a regular call.
What Echo voice calling means
Amazon calls the feature set Alexa Communication. Alexa Calling refers specifically to calls within that broader set, which also includes messaging. Supported Echo devices and the Alexa app can serve as endpoints, though feature availability can vary by device and region. See Amazon’s Alexa Calling and Messaging overview and its device terminology guidance.
To call an Alexa contact, a user can ask a supported Echo, for example, “Alexa, call Mom.” The recipient’s supported device or app alerts them, and they can answer. A call can also be started from a contact in the Alexa app. Amazon’s voice-calling instructions describe the supported calling options.
Who an Echo can call
There are two different destinations: another Alexa Communication user, or—where supported—a regular phone number. These options have different geographic and number restrictions.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Alexa contacts and devices
Alexa Calling can connect supported Echo devices and the Alexa app with other Alexa Communication users. It is an internet-based communication feature, not a general-purpose telephone service.
Supported telephone numbers
As of Amazon’s FAQ accessed in 2026, supported Echo devices and the Alexa app can place outbound calls to up to 100 phone numbers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. This is a service limit, not a promise that every number or device is supported. Amazon excludes emergency numbers, including 911, and its calling instructions also list premium-rate numbers, three-digit or abbreviated codes, and international numbers outside those four countries as unsupported. Check Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ and calling instructions for current availability. Do not rely on Alexa to call emergency services.

How Drop In differs from a call
A normal Alexa call rings so the recipient can answer. Drop In is an optional, intercom-like connection to a supported Alexa-enabled device. For a permitted Drop In, the connection can begin automatically after its indicators appear rather than waiting for the recipient to answer a ringing call.

Privacy and limits to the calling role
Amazon says audio and video calls and Drop Ins between Alexa-enabled devices or the Alexa app are end-to-end encrypted by default. If users enable Enhanced Features, such as group Drop In, Amazon says the communication is temporarily decrypted, processed, and re-encrypted in the cloud; it also says it does not store call audio or information about call content. When a call reaches a landline or mobile phone, the portion carried over the telephone network is not encrypted. These are Amazon’s stated protections and qualifications; see its Alexa device FAQ.
Alexa Communication is not a replacement for traditional two-way telephone or mobile service, according to Amazon’s Alexa Terms of Use. Device support and calling availability can vary, so confirm that the specific Echo model and region support the feature you need before setup or purchase.
