Verdict: The Echo SRM-222ES is a 21.2 cm³ petrol two-stroke line trimmer and brushcutter family with ES-start and published output of 0.7 kW. It is sold in loop-handle (L) and U-handle configurations, and the regional specifications are not identical: listed dry weight and nylon-head part numbers vary between the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
This is a specification-led review rather than a hands-on performance test. Public information establishes the engine, attachments, dimensions, prices and warranty terms shown below, but it does not establish verified runtime, cutting speed, durability or a comparative ranking. Choose the handle, attachment and replacement parts for the exact market version shown on your machine’s model plate.
What the SRM-222ES is
The SRM-222ES is a small petrol trimmer/brushcutter built around a 21.2 cm³, two-stroke engine. ECHO’s regional product pages list 0.7 kW output; the US specification also expresses that as 1.0 PS. “ES” identifies the easy-start system used by this family. The machine can be configured for nylon-line trimming and, on the US U-handle listing, a three-cutter metal blade.

The published figures do not, by themselves, tell you how quickly it cuts, how long a tank lasts or how it behaves in heavy growth. Those outcomes depend on vegetation, attachment, technique, fuel, maintenance and the exact variant.

L handle versus U handle
The letter after the slash identifies the handle configuration rather than a different engine family. “L” versions use a loop handle, while “U” versions use a bicycle-style handlebar. The control layout, working posture, harness setup and the type of work each configuration suits can differ even though both use the 21.2 cm³ engine.
| Configuration | Typical control and posture | Published market example | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| SRM-222ES/L loop handle | A compact loop around the shaft, generally chosen where maneuverability and close control matter. | United Kingdom and Australia product listings. | Exact dry weight, supplied nylon head, approved blade options and harness instructions for your market. |
| SRM-222ES/U U handle | A wider bicycle-style handlebar that spreads the controls and can suit sweeping, brushcutter-style work with a harness. | United States product listing. | Whether the local package includes a blade, which harness is specified and which attachments are approved. |
Do not treat an L and U model as interchangeable when ordering parts. The regional pages use different nylon-head item numbers, and the U listing explicitly identifies a metal blade. Read the full model designation and serial or model-plate information before buying a head, blade or control component.
Published specifications by market
The following figures are copied from the listed regional configurations. “Dry weight” is not the same as a ready-to-use weight with fuel, line, guard, harness or blade, so these numbers should not be compared with a retailer’s assembled weight unless the measurement basis is identical.

Regional equipment, guards and measurement conventions can change the published number. Confirm the specification on the page for the country where you will purchase and operate the trimmer.

Cutting heads, line and blade compatibility
Nylon line
Nylon line is the normal choice for grass, lawn edges and light vegetation. The publicly visible CHOICE listing for its reviewed Australian-market configuration reports 2 mm line and bump feed, with a 41 cm cutting diameter. That is a market-specific listing figure, not a universal specification for every SRM-222ES package. The ECHO regional pages identify compatible nylon-head part numbers, but they do not all use the same number.
Metal blade
The ECHO US SRM-222ES/U page lists three-cutter metal blade P021-014310. A blade changes the operating method, guarding requirements and risk profile. Do not fit a blade merely because it physically fits the shaft: use only the attachment, guard, hardware and procedure approved for your precise model and market.
Why the part-number conflict matters
The United States U listing names nylon head X047-000561. The United Kingdom L listing names X047-000560, while the Australian L listing names X047-000561. A retailer’s generic “SRM-222ES head” description is therefore insufficient evidence of compatibility. Check the model plate, the current local parts catalogue and the manual before ordering. If the catalogue and a marketplace listing disagree, ask an ECHO dealer or service centre to confirm the part number.

Do not infer a fuel ratio from the engine size or from another ECHO model. Two-stroke fuel requirements, approved oil and storage procedures must come from the applicable manual. The available material does not establish a safe substitute instruction.
What the public CHOICE listing does—and does not—show
CHOICE’s public record labels the product “Echo SRM-222ES review” and describes it as a petrol 2-stroke line trimmer. The visible listing gives an Australian price of A$399, a five-year warranty, 5.6 kg weight, 41 cm cutting diameter, 2 mm line and bump feed. Its expert rating, test year and detailed test results are behind membership and are not visible in the public excerpt.
Those figures should be read as the specifications of the reviewed listing. The 5.6 kg value, for example, is not directly interchangeable with ECHO’s 4.5–4.8 kg regional dry-weight figures because the weighing basis and included equipment are not stated in the public record. Likewise, the 41 cm diameter and 2 mm line should not be assumed for every L or U package.

An ECHO UK listing was indexed at £289 and marked “Sold out.” That is a time-sensitive listing status, not a current universal price or an indication that every UK seller has no stock. Retail price, availability, warranty duration, registration requirements and commercial-use coverage can change by country, date and seller. Obtain the written local terms before purchase, especially if the trimmer will be used for paid work.
Safety boundaries and required manual checks
The operator-manual listing warns users to read and follow the safe-operation rules and states that failure to do so could result in serious injury. The manual sections identified in the listing cover the complete operating cycle:
- Fuel preparation and handling.
- Engine starting and stopping.
- Nylon-line trimming.
- Metal-blade trimming.
- Shoulder-harness use and adjustment.
- Maintenance and storage.
Before operating, download or obtain the current manual for the exact model designation. Confirm the required protective equipment, the debris guard, approved line diameter, blade hardware, harness connection point and maintenance intervals from that document. The available excerpts do not establish a specific PPE standard or permit a safe recommendation of a particular product.
Keep bystanders clear of the cutting arc, inspect the head and guard before each use, stop the engine before clearing material and follow the manual’s transport and storage instructions. These are operating boundaries, not a claim that the SRM-222ES has been independently safety-tested here.

Maintenance and ownership considerations
A petrol two-stroke trimmer adds tasks that a battery tool does not: preparing the correct fuel, dealing with stale mixture, cleaning the air and cooling systems, checking the spark plug and storing the machine properly. The manual’s maintenance schedule should control when each task is done; calendar intervals can differ from hours-of-use intervals.
For line work, inspect the spool, eyelets, bump-feed mechanism and guard for wear. For blade work, inspect the blade, retaining hardware and guard before every session and replace damaged parts rather than trying to straighten or reuse them. Use the local parts catalogue for replacement components because the head numbers differ among the retrieved regional pages.
Dealer support matters more on a petrol machine than on a sealed consumer appliance. ECHO’s regional pages provide purchase and dealer routes, while the manual identifies maintenance procedures. A nearby service centre can confirm parts, perform tune-ups and interpret warranty requirements, but stock and service terms were not established for every market.
CO₂ figure: what it represents
ECHO Australia lists CO₂ at 1262 g/kW·h. ECHO explains that this is a representative-engine laboratory measurement, not a result from an individual owner’s machine. Its SRM-222ES/U specification page states: “This CO² measurement results from testing a (parent) engine representative of the engine type (engine family) over a fixed test cycle under laboratory conditions and does not imply or express any guarantee of the performance of a particular engine.”
Use the number as a manufacturer specification for the engine family and test method described, not as a prediction of the emissions from one tank of fuel in your yard.
How to choose the correct SRM-222ES before paying
- Identify the handle code. Confirm whether the listing and machine plate say SRM-222ES/L or SRM-222ES/U. A loop handle and U handle are different working configurations.
- Check the local specification page. Record the regional dry weight, tank capacity, supplied guard and included attachments. Do not substitute a figure from another country without labeling it as such.
- Confirm the cutting system. Decide whether you need nylon line only or an approved blade system. Verify the exact nylon-head and blade part numbers in the local catalogue.
- Verify line size. The CHOICE listing reports 2 mm line for its configuration. Confirm the diameter in the manual for your own machine before buying a spool or bulk line.
- Read warranty conditions. Check residential versus commercial coverage, duration, registration and exclusions with the local seller. Australian coverage is listed as five years residential and two years commercial.
- Check service access. Locate an authorised dealer or service centre that can supply the correct head, blade hardware and maintenance parts.
- Get the current manual. Use it for fuel preparation, starting, attachment installation, harness adjustment, protective equipment and maintenance intervals.
- Compare weights fairly. Ask whether a competing figure is dry, fuelled, with guard, with head or with harness. A bare dry-weight comparison can produce a misleading conclusion.
How to compare the SRM-222ES with another trimmer
A meaningful comparison should use the same decision axes rather than one headline number:
- Handle and control: match a loop handle or U handle to the space, cutting pattern and harness posture you actually use.
- Published weight: compare only measurements made on the same basis. The SRM-222ES regional figures range from 4.5 to 4.8 kg dry, while the public CHOICE listing shows 5.6 kg without exposing its weighing method.
- Attachment support: check whether the package and manual support the nylon head, blade or both, and whether replacement parts are available locally.
- Fuel and starting requirements: compare tank size and starting system, but do not convert those figures into runtime without a controlled test.
- Warranty and service: assess local coverage and dealer access, especially for commercial use.
- Independent evidence: distinguish accessible test data from a product-page specification. The public CHOICE excerpt does not reveal its detailed results, and no independent hands-on test is established for this review.
Strengths and limitations supported by the published evidence
Strengths
- Compact 21.2 cm³ two-stroke format with published 0.7 kW output.
- ES-start system identified across the family.
- Both loop-handle and U-handle configurations are available in regional listings.
- Nylon-line cutting is documented, and the US U listing also specifies a three-cutter metal blade.
- Australian pricing and warranty terms are clearly published: A$399, five years residential and two years commercial.
Limitations and unknowns
- Regional pages disagree on dry weight and nylon-head part number.
- The CHOICE public page hides the expert rating, test year and detailed test results.
- No verified runtime, cutting-rate, noise, vibration or durability result is established here.
- Retail price, stock and warranty eligibility are market- and date-dependent.
- Fuel ratios, PPE specifications and maintenance intervals must be taken from the current manual for the exact model.
Bottom line
The Echo SRM-222ES makes the most sense for a buyer who specifically wants a small petrol trimmer and can obtain local fuel, parts and service. Its core specification is consistent—21.2 cm³, two-stroke, 0.7 kW and ES-start—but the L/U handle choice, published weight, head part number, price and warranty depend on market and package. Treat the regional product page and matching manual as the authority for your machine, and do not use the public CHOICE listing as proof of performance until its member-only test details are available.
