Neither eBay nor Mercari is always better. Buyers should compare the exact checkout total and the protection that applies to their purchase. Sellers should compare the fees for their item and listing, the shipping method, and who bears the risk if something goes wrong. The US-facing policies below are subject to change, so check the live listing and current marketplace terms before committing.

The most important difference is that Mercari publishes a stated percentage for qualifying new or updated listings, while eBay’s seller fees depend on more variables. How to choose as a buyer
Start with the item, not the platform’s reputation. A used item’s condition, completeness, seller description, postage, and the remedy available if the listing is inaccurate can matter more than a marketplace-wide fee. Compare the same item—or the closest genuinely comparable listings—at the point where you can see the charges that apply to your order.

Compare the full checkout cost
- Find a listing that matches the item you want, including model or edition, condition, included parts, and any defects disclosed.
- Review the displayed shipping charge and any marketplace fee before deciding. On Mercari, the Buyer Protection fee for qualifying listings is calculated on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, not the item price alone.
- Compare the checkout totals for equivalent listings. Include applicable taxes and any other charges shown to you; do not compare one listing’s item price with another listing’s final total.
- Check whether the lower total comes with a difference in condition, delivery method, or seller return terms that changes the value of the purchase.
For illustration only, if a qualifying Mercari listing has a $100 item price and $10 buyer-paid shipping, the 3.6% fee base is $110, making that fee $3.96. That calculation is not a quote for a particular order: taxes or other checkout details are not included, and the fee structure applies only to qualifying listings. Understand what counts as a problem
On Mercari, the return guidance distinguishes an item-related problem from a preference change. A significant mismatch with the listing, shipping damage, or suspected inauthenticity can qualify for a return request; fit, style, smell, and a change of mind generally do not. If a problem occurs, use the order’s proper help or claim flow and meet the deadline for sending an approved return with the required label.

eBay’s Money Back Guarantee is aimed at an item that never arrives, is faulty or damaged, or does not match its description. A buyer who simply changes their mind must look to the seller’s stated return policy instead. For covered claims, the seller may have to pay return shipping even if the seller does not otherwise offer returns.
Choose based on the kind of uncertainty you can accept
- If you are worried about an item being materially different from its description, inspect the listing closely and understand the relevant claim process before paying. A protection policy does not make vague photographs or incomplete descriptions harmless.
- If size, personal taste, compatibility, or fit is uncertain, do not assume a preference-based return will be available. Ask the seller for missing measurements or details before purchase, and review the seller’s return terms.
- If shipping damage is a concern, look at the package and delivery arrangements where information is available, and preserve the order details and packaging if a claim may be needed.
- If the checkout totals differ only slightly, the clearer listing and more suitable remedy may be more valuable than the small price difference.
How to choose as a seller
A useful seller comparison is not “10% versus eBay’s maximum.” Mercari’s published seller percentage has a defined base and listing conditions; eBay’s fee structure is variable. The meaningful comparison is the expected amount left from a particular sale after the fee that applies to that exact listing, plus shipping costs and any optional listing expenses.

Estimate net proceeds before listing
- Choose a realistic expected sale price based on the item and its condition. Do not treat a platform’s fee percentage as a prediction of what the item will sell for.
- Identify the exact category, format, account circumstances, and optional upgrades you would use on eBay. Use the current fee calculation for that setup; eBay’s Seller Center describes up to 250 zero-insertion-fee listings per month, subject to terms and exceptions, but that allowance does not remove every possible selling fee.
- For Mercari, confirm whether the listing is subject to the structure effective January 6, 2025, or may retain legacy fees. Updating an older listing can change which structure applies, so check the listing’s applicable terms rather than relying only on its original creation date.
- Account for buyer-paid shipping in the relevant fee base, and separately calculate the actual shipping expense and any packing costs you expect to pay.
- Compare the resulting proceeds under both setups, including any relevant return or shipment-loss exposure. Recheck the current terms immediately before listing because fees and policies can change.
For example, a $100 item price with $10 buyer-paid shipping produces a $110 base for Mercari’s stated 10% seller fee on a qualifying new or updated listing: $11. This is a fee illustration, not a profit estimate; it excludes your item cost, packaging, and any other expenses, and an older listing may have different terms. Compare it with eBay’s fee result for the exact category and listing rather than applying a generic eBay percentage.
Consider the return and dispute exposure
Seller choice is also a choice about what happens after delivery. On Mercari, an eligible buyer issue can be raised during the short reporting window, and the transaction can complete automatically if the buyer does not rate within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery. That timing makes accurate condition notes, clear photos, and prompt attention to order notifications especially important.

On eBay, a buyer’s claim under the Money Back Guarantee may concern non-arrival, damage or fault, or a mismatch with the listing. The seller may be responsible for return shipping in those eligible cases, even if the seller’s ordinary policy does not offer returns. A change-of-mind request is a separate matter governed by the seller’s return policy.
For either marketplace, describe wear, missing components, and known faults precisely. Keep your own records of the item’s condition and the shipment, and follow the marketplace’s required order and shipping process. These are practical ways to make a listing and any later claim easier to document; they do not expand a platform’s protection beyond its terms.

Shipping: compare the parcel and the process
Shipping cannot be ranked from the available policy details alone. Mercari specifies conditional protection limits for its eligible prepaid labels, while the eBay information reviewed here does not establish a matching rate-and-coverage table. Neither fact proves that one marketplace will provide the lower postage price for a particular box or the better protection in every circumstance.
Mercari label limits and conditions
Mercari says its prepaid labels qualify for shipping protection up to $200 for standard, economy, and Media Mail rates, and up to $20 for First-Class Envelope rates, provided the seller follows the applicable rules. These are coverage ceilings, not unconditional reimbursements. Check the current label terms, package dimensions, size limits, carrier, and required process for the specific shipment.
If you ship using your own label, Mercari says you are responsible for the shipping costs and do not receive Mercari Shipping Protection through that method. A seller should therefore weigh the freedom to arrange shipping independently against losing that particular platform protection.
What to verify on either platform
- Measure and weigh the packed parcel, not just the item, and make sure the selected service accepts its dimensions and contents.
- Check the current carrier price and whether tracking or other shipment documentation is required for the platform’s applicable process.
- Read the protection terms for exclusions and claim requirements; a stated limit does not mean every loss or damage claim will be covered.
- Compare the actual shipping option available to the buyer with the cost and responsibilities you will take on as the seller.

Because the platforms’ fees and policies do not line up as a single like-for-like score, make the decision around the specific transaction. The following framework helps narrow it down without assuming a universal winner.

- Comparing only the item prices. A cheaper listing can cost more after postage, buyer charges, and taxes at checkout.
- Treating Mercari’s 10% as a fee on the item price alone. For the qualifying listings covered by its current structure, buyer-paid shipping is included in the stated base.
- Assuming every Mercari listing has the same fee. Older listings may retain legacy terms until updated; check the fee structure that applies to the listing.
- Using eBay’s fee range as a quote. Its category-dependent range and per-order fee do not tell a seller the total for a specific item, account, format, or optional service.
- Equating a return with a guaranteed refund for any reason. The cited protections address defined item or delivery problems; preference-based returns are treated differently.
- Assuming shipping protection follows the seller regardless of label. Mercari’s stated Shipping Protection depends on an eligible Mercari label and compliance with its rules.
- Calling one platform “safer” or “cheaper to ship” without a parcel-level comparison. The available eBay information does not establish directly comparable rates and coverage.
Bottom line for buyers and sellers
For buyers, choose by the live checkout total, listing quality, and the remedy available for the problem you are most concerned about. For sellers, calculate the exact category and listing fee, then weigh shipping arrangements and the return or shipment risk you will accept. Mercari’s stated fee terms are easier to express as a percentage for qualifying listings; eBay requires a more specific calculation.
