For Australian sellers, EB Games is usually the simpler option when it accepts the game and its assessed trade value is worthwhile as store credit. A private sale may suit a sought-after game if you are willing to list it, deal with buyers and fulfil the sale. Neither route is guaranteed to pay more: compare a current, item-specific EB Games quote with credible private-sale evidence, subtract costs, and decide how much your time and convenience matter.
What matters most in the comparison
The question is not just which route shows the larger number. EB Games offers a retailer assessment and trade credit under state-dependent arrangements. A private listing lets you set an asking price, but that price is not proof of a completed sale or the cash you will keep. You may need to answer questions, negotiate, arrange a meetup or post the game, and account for any fees or fulfilment costs.
Compare one game at a time. The result can differ by title, edition, condition, packaging, date, your EB World level, location and the private-sale platform you choose. There is no published current EB Games figure that applies to all Nintendo games, and the cited sources do not establish a typical private-sale premium or average difference.
It is useful to think of the two routes as different kinds of value. A private sale may turn into cash if you find a buyer and complete the transaction; an EB Games trade gives you value to use under its trade-credit arrangements. If your next purchase is at EB Games, that credit may be convenient. If you need money for something else, do not compare the credit at face value with cash unless you can actually use it in the same way. The right choice is the one that meets your purpose after you account for uncertainty and effort.

How EB Games trade-ins work
Check whether the game is eligible
EB Games’ current Australian trade-format information lists Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games among the formats it may accept. Acceptance is conditional, and EB Games reserves the right to change what it takes. The game must meet its requirements for Australian rating, compatibility with Australian systems and English language content. Its trade guidance says scratched games or games missing the original case, cover display insert or correct rating may still be accepted, but a refurbishment charge can affect the final value. Retro games require their case or box.
If the game is loose or its case is damaged, do not assume a replacement case counts as original packaging or guarantees acceptance. A replacement case may help with storage or presentation, but the published policy does not establish that it changes the assessment. Check the current requirements for the specific game before making a trip.
For a comparison that is genuinely like-for-like, note both the game’s physical condition and what comes with it. A loose cartridge is not the same condition description as a complete copy with its original case and inserts. The same details matter when you look at private listings: a higher asking price for a complete copy is not a reliable comparison for your incomplete one. If an item has a scratch, missing cover insert or other issue, describe it accurately rather than assuming that a buyer or store will overlook it.
Get a current quote—and treat it as provisional
Use the EB Games estimate tool or ask a store for an assessment. The company’s policy says quotes made online or in store are valid only on the day they are given and may change the next day. An online estimate assumes the item is in resalable condition; it is not guaranteed until staff assess the game in store. The final offer may therefore differ from the estimate.
The estimate shown can also depend on EB World membership level. EB Games says the displayed “up to” estimate is for EB World Level IV members; signing in may show a more accurate estimate for your level and any applicable EB World PLUS subscription. Its support team says it cannot provide trade values and directs customers to the estimate tool or a store. Because the quote is time-sensitive, record the date and the exact game and packaging details when comparing it with another route.
There is no single durable published trade amount to use as a shortcut for all Nintendo games. A figure found in an old forum post, a past trade sheet or a previous quote may no longer apply. Get an estimate for the exact item around the time you plan to trade, and regard the in-store assessment as the step that confirms whether the item is accepted and at what value. If you are considering several games, compare each separately rather than assuming they will all receive the same treatment.

Understand what you receive and where rules differ
Do not assume the trade is a nationwide cash offer. EB Games says trading for cash or towards gift cards is not permitted in Western Australia, and its support information says the way trade credit is provided depends on the state. Its policy also says it does not match prices offered by online or private traders. A private listing price is therefore not a basis for expecting EB Games to increase its quote.
Age and identification requirements vary by jurisdiction. EB Games’ current requirements page lists minimum ages of 17 in Queensland, 16 in New South Wales and 18 in Victoria, with separate requirements for other states and territories. Check your state or territory’s current rules and acceptable ID before visiting.
These differences are worth checking before you make a special trip. In particular, confirm what trade credit means where you live, whether you are old enough to trade under the local rules, and what identification the current requirements call for. Do not infer the rules for one state from the policy in another. If the amount offered is important to your decision, make sure you understand the form of value you will receive before you decide that a trade is preferable to a private sale.
What a private sale involves
Set a realistic expectation for proceeds
Private selling gives you control over the asking price and lets you reach buyers through local or national marketplaces. However, an asking price is only a seller’s request: it does not show that a buyer will pay it, how long the sale will take, or what you will net. Look for credible evidence for the same game, edition and condition. Where available, completed-sale information is more useful than a collection of current asking prices.
For each potential sale, calculate the amount you would actually keep. Include any seller-paid platform charges, postage, packaging, travel to a meetup and a realistic allowance for discounting. If a platform’s terms or fees are unclear, check its current rules before listing rather than building an assumed cost—or assumed zero cost—into your comparison.
There is no source-supported percentage that a private seller can expect to earn above an EB Games offer. A sought-after title could make private selling worth investigating, but the label “sought-after” does not guarantee a buyer or a particular price. Compare a small set of genuinely similar listings and, if available, completed-sale evidence. Pay attention to edition, condition and completeness, and remember that current listings can remain unsold or change price.

Private selling also shifts more of the work to you. Depending on the chosen venue and method, that can mean photographing the item, writing an accurate description, answering questions, agreeing on a price, arranging payment and deciding whether to post or meet locally. A buyer may ask for a discount or may not complete the sale. Those possibilities are not reasons to avoid private selling, but they are part of the comparison: the potential proceeds come with time and fulfilment responsibilities that a simple trade estimate does not capture.
Account for eBay Australia’s 2026 terms
eBay Australia’s seller information, last updated 27 March 2026, says its Buyer Protection fee and benefits apply to relevant purchases from 12 May 2026, excluding Vehicles and Classified Ads. For eligible Australian-based sellers without a Pro plan, the buyer pays this fee, which is included in the buyer-facing listing price. The published calculation is $0.30 plus 8% of the item-price portion up to $20, 6% of the portion from $20 to $500, and 4% of the portion from $500 to $5,000.
The bracket percentages apply to the relevant portions of the price, rather than turning the fee into a flat seller deduction. That distinction matters when you compare an eBay listing with an EB Games assessment: the buyer-facing total and the amount a seller receives are not automatically the same measure. eBay says the buyer pays the Buyer Protection fee for the relevant eligible purchases, and it is included in the displayed price.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That buyer-paid fee is not the same as money deducted from your seller payout. eBay says Australian sellers with $25,000 or less in eBay sales during the preceding 12 months qualify for its free-selling experience with no transaction fees, although other fees may apply. Shipping labels may generally need to be bought through eBay. Check your account eligibility and the costs shown for your specific listing at the time you post it; do not treat the free-selling terms as a promise that every seller or listing has no costs.
In practical terms, do not subtract the Buyer Protection fee from your proceeds as if it were automatically a seller charge, but do not ignore costs that do apply to your own account or fulfilment method. Eligibility for eBay’s free-selling experience depends on the stated Australian-seller and prior-12-month sales conditions, and other fees may still apply. Confirm the rules shown for your account and listing when you are ready to sell; a fee page can change, and a particular listing may not share another seller’s terms.
Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are also examples of places Australians use for private sales. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) identifies them as marketplaces, but the cited guidance does not establish their current fee schedules or seller-protection processes. Check each platform’s terms directly before relying on a particular payment, delivery or dispute process.

A fair, item-by-item way to choose
- Identify the exact game. Write down its title and edition, whether it is a Switch or Switch 2 game, the cartridge or disc condition, and whether the original case and inserts are present. Note any damage, missing material or other condition issue that could affect acceptance or price.
- Get the EB Games figure for that item and date. Use the current estimate tool or request an in-store assessment. If using an online estimate, record it as provisional, not guaranteed. Confirm what the trade arrangement means in your state and whether you meet applicable age and ID rules.
- Find relevant private-sale evidence. Compare the same title and edition in similar condition and with similar packaging. Prefer completed-sale information where available; otherwise, be cautious about treating asking prices as likely proceeds. Do not use a different edition or a visibly better-condition copy as a direct price match.
- Calculate private-sale net proceeds. Start with a realistic expected sale amount, then subtract any seller-paid fees, postage, packaging, travel and expected discounting. Include only costs that apply to your chosen platform and method; verify current rules where necessary.
- Value the EB Games credit for your own plans. Compare the credit with something you will actually buy, not with an equivalent amount of cash unless you can use it that way. Consider state-dependent credit arrangements and whether the retailer option helps with a planned purchase.
- Choose using both value and effort. Decide whether any plausible difference in net proceeds is worth the time spent photographing, listing, responding to buyers, negotiating, packing or meeting someone. Do not count time and certainty as a universal dollar amount; they are personal trade-offs.
A compact worksheet can keep the comparison honest. For each title, record the date, the EB Games estimate or assessment and whether it is final, the item’s condition and included packaging, the private-sale evidence you used, and your expected net after applicable costs. Then add a separate note for what the trade credit can buy and how much time you are prepared to spend. This makes it easier to spot a tempting but misleading comparison, such as a provisional store estimate against an unsold high asking price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the gap between the likely private-sale net and the credit is small, convenience may reasonably decide the matter. If the possible gap is meaningful to you, you can choose to spend more time checking comparable sales and listing privately. There is no universal threshold: the decision depends on how useful the credit is, what a buyer is likely to pay for your particular copy, and how much effort you consider worthwhile.
Quick comparison by decision factor
| Factor | EB Games trade-in | Private sale |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | Trade credit under arrangements that depend on state; Western Australia does not permit trading for cash or towards gift cards. | Payment from the buyer through the chosen sale method; the actual amount depends on a completed transaction and any applicable costs. |
| How value is established | Current estimate or in-store assessment; an online estimate assumes resalable condition and is not final. | Your asking price and buyer demand; asking prices alone do not establish completed-sale proceeds. |
| Condition and eligibility | Australian rating, Australian-system compatibility and English-language requirements apply; condition and packaging can affect acceptance or value. | You can describe and price the item, but buyers will judge the condition and the platform’s rules apply. |
| Effort and fulfilment | A store assessment rather than creating and fulfilling a buyer listing. | May involve photos, listing, buyer questions, negotiation, payment, packing, postage or a meetup. |
| Price matching | EB Games says it does not match online or private trader prices. | You choose the asking price, but there is no guarantee of a sale at that amount. |
| Costs and protections | Use the current quote and applicable trade rules; the cited information does not establish one universal trade value. | Check current platform fees and processes. Legal protections differ between a one-off private sale and a business sale. |
Private-sale legal protections in Australia
The ACCC distinguishes a one-off sale between private individuals from a sale by a business. Most Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees do not apply to a one-off private sale when the seller is not running a business. The guarantees concerning title, undisturbed possession, and freedom from hidden debts or charges still apply.
Marketplace processes may affect how a dispute is handled, and the ACCC notes that online marketplaces can make consumer rights harder to exercise. It describes marketplace auctions such as eBay as settings where buyers and sellers mostly deal directly. Read the selected platform’s current rules as well as the applicable law; the general guidance here is not individual legal advice.
This distinction is about the nature of the transaction, not a promise that every issue between a buyer and seller has the same outcome. The ACCC’s summary concerns a one-off sale between people where the seller is not running a business. If you are unsure whether your circumstances fit that description, or a dispute arises, consult the applicable guidance and the platform’s own process rather than assuming that every retailer guarantee applies to an individual sale.

Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing an estimate with a completed private sale. An online EB Games estimate is provisional, and a private listing may never sell. Compare like with like and record the status of each figure.
- Using a stale trade quote. EB Games says values are valid only on the quote date. Recheck rather than carrying an old offer into a later decision.
- Assuming a private sale always pays more. The sources do not provide a current title-by-title market comparison or a typical premium. The outcome depends on the specific item and sale.
- Ignoring the value of credit to you. Store credit may be useful if it fits a purchase you already plan to make, but it is not interchangeable with cash for every seller.
- Overlooking packaging and condition. Missing original components can affect an EB Games assessment, and a private buyer may also consider completeness when deciding what to pay.
- Assuming one state’s rules apply everywhere. Trade-credit arrangements, cash restrictions, minimum ages and ID requirements can vary. Check the current terms for your location.
- Treating a platform fee rule as universal. eBay’s published eligibility thresholds and buyer-fee terms are specific to its Australian service and can depend on seller status, listing type and date. Other platforms have their own rules.
- Confusing buyer-facing price with seller proceeds. eBay’s Buyer Protection fee is buyer-paid for relevant eligible purchases, while other fees or fulfilment costs may still affect what a seller keeps. Check the applicable terms instead of applying a single fee assumption to every route.
- Assuming replacement packaging solves an eligibility issue. A replacement case can be useful for storage, but EB Games’ guidance about missing original packaging does not establish that a third-party case is accepted as a substitute.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will EB Games give me for my Switch or Switch 2 game?
There is no single published amount that applies to every Nintendo game. Use EB Games’ current estimate tool for the exact title, or ask a store for an assessment. Online estimates assume resalable condition, may depend on EB World level and are not guaranteed until staff assess the game. Quotes are valid only on the day given.

Do EB Games trade-ins pay cash or store credit?
Do not assume you will receive cash nationwide. EB Games says the way trade credit is provided depends on the state, and trading for cash or towards gift cards is not permitted in Western Australia. Check the current terms for your location before relying on a particular payment method.
Will EB Games accept a Switch game without its original case?
EB Games says a game missing its original case, cover display insert or correct rating may still be accepted, but a refurbishment charge can affect its value. The policy does not establish that a replacement case is accepted as an original substitute. Retro games require their case or box.
Does EB Games match an eBay or private-sale price?
No. EB Games’ trade policy says it does not match trade prices offered by online or private traders. A higher private listing or sale price is not a basis for expecting EB Games to increase its offer.

Is selling Nintendo games on eBay free in Australia?
eBay says eligible Australian sellers with $25,000 or less in eBay sales in the preceding 12 months qualify for its free-selling experience with no transaction fees, although other fees may apply. Relevant purchases from 12 May 2026 may include a buyer-paid Buyer Protection fee; eBay’s seller information was last updated 27 March 2026. Check your eligibility and listing-specific costs when you list.
Do Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply when I sell a game privately?
Most consumer guarantees do not apply to a one-off sale between private individuals when the seller is not running a business. The guarantees about title, undisturbed possession and no hidden debts or charges still apply. Platform dispute processes may also matter, so check the chosen marketplace’s current terms.
The Bottom Line
Choose EB Games for a simpler trade when the game is eligible, the day’s assessed credit suits a purchase you actually plan to make, and the local rules work for you. Consider selling privately when credible evidence for the same title and condition suggests a worthwhile net return after costs—and you are comfortable handling the listing and buyer. Compare each game separately; neither route has a universal price advantage.
