Eau de parfum (EDP) often lasts longer than eau de toilette (EDT), because it generally contains a higher share of fragrance concentrate. But concentration alone does not tell you how far a scent will project: a particular EDT can outlast or project more than a particular EDP. Longevity is how long you can detect a fragrance on skin; projection is how far its scent carries.
What is the difference between EDP and EDT?
The labels describe fragrance formats, commonly distinguished by the proportion of fragrance concentrate relative to the alcohol base. EDP generally has a higher concentrate share than EDT. That can support longer wear, but the label is a broad clue—not a complete specification of a bottle’s formula or a guarantee of how it will perform.
The figures and descriptions published by fragrance houses are not one universal scale. Jean Paul Gaultier’s US Help Center describes EDT as having a lower concentration and lists 5–15% for EDT. Its article was updated March 4, 2026. Amouage, in a November 23, 2023 Help Center article, gives general industry ranges and says its own EDP offerings are 20–30%. Those are source-specific descriptions, not proof that every product follows the same percentages or that two versions of a scent differ only in concentration.
| Format | What the label generally indicates | What the cited source says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDT | Generally a lower fragrance-concentrate share than EDP | Jean Paul Gaultier’s US Help Center lists 5–15% for EDT (updated March 4, 2026). | A universal EDT percentage, guaranteed wear time, or projection distance. |
| EDP | Generally a higher fragrance-concentrate share than EDT | Amouage describes its own EDP offerings as 20–30% and also discusses general industry ranges (November 23, 2023). | A universal EDP percentage or a guarantee that every EDP lasts longer or projects farther than every EDT. |
The percentages should be read as the cited brands’ descriptions, not as a legally fixed, industry-wide boundary. Even when a brand gives a percentage, it does not tell you everything about the ingredients, balance, or behavior of that specific fragrance. If you need details for a particular bottle, start with its maker’s own product information rather than assuming a generic concentration chart applies.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Help Center summarizes the distinction this way: “Eau de Parfum (EDP) has a higher oil concentration, while Eau de Toilette (EDT) has a lower concentration (5-15%) and a lighter scent.” That is the brand’s description, not a universal specification for every EDT. Amouage’s Help Center likewise cautions that “the impact of oil concentration is much more complex and varies depending on each formula.” Read the label as a starting point for comparison, then look at the specific product information and, where possible, sample the actual fragrance.
Which lasts longer: EDP or EDT?
EDP often lasts longer, but there is no dependable number of hours that applies to the whole category. Higher concentration is a useful longevity clue, not a test result for two specific bottles. Amouage makes the distinction explicit: higher perfume-oil concentration usually means improved performance, particularly longer-lasting scent, but the effect is more complex and varies by formula.
Longevity, also called tenacity, is the length of time a fragrance remains perceptible on skin after application. It does not necessarily mean the scent stays equally noticeable throughout that time. A fragrance may be easy to detect soon after spraying and much closer to the skin later; another may remain detectable to its wearer but not to people nearby. Without a controlled comparison of named products under the same conditions, fixed EDP-versus-EDT hour ranges would be misleading.

Ingredient volatility, heat, the amount applied, the wearer, and the surroundings can all change what you observe. Aesop’s fragrance guide notes that skin and environmental factors—including temperature, body chemistry, hormones, and diet—can influence how a fragrance behaves. The formula itself matters too: concentration is only one part of the finished scent.
It is useful to separate “still present” from “still projecting.” A fragrance may remain perceptible close to the skin after its more noticeable opening has faded. That is still longevity, even if people around you no longer detect it readily. Conversely, a scent that makes a strong first impression does not automatically stay noticeable for longer. When comparing wear time, check the scent at more than one point after application rather than relying on the first few minutes.
Which projects more: EDP or EDT?
Neither concentration label is a reliable universal winner for projection. Projection describes how far a fragrance can be detected from the wearer. It is not the same outcome as longevity: a perfume can last close to the skin without filling a room, while a scent that is noticeable at a distance early on may not remain that way for as long.

Aesop’s guide uses sillage for the trace a fragrance leaves as someone moves away, and notes that the term is sometimes used for projection. The concepts are related because both concern how a scent is perceived beyond the skin, but they do not provide a standard distance or a guaranteed performance rating. The source’s description of sillage as a figurative wake helps explain the idea; it is not a measurement.

A higher concentrate share may contribute to a stronger or longer-lasting impression, but the specific formula, ingredients, amount applied, temperature, and setting affect how far the scent carries. A particular EDT may project more than a particular EDP. No universal EDP-versus-EDT projection ranking or standard distance is established, so choose by trying the actual fragrance rather than inferring its scent radius from the letters on the label.
Projection is also a question of context. “Noticeable” can mean detectable to someone standing close by, or apparent across a larger shared space; those are not interchangeable tests. If you want a fragrance that stays close, evaluate it in a normal close-contact setting. If you want to know whether it carries farther, ask for another person’s impression at a consistent distance rather than judging only by what you smell on your own wrist.
Longevity and projection are different questions
| What you want to know | Meaning | How to assess it |
|---|---|---|
| Longevity | How long the fragrance remains perceptible on your skin | Check it at several points after application, including later in the day, rather than judging only the opening. |
| Projection | How far from you the scent is detectable | Notice whether it is apparent to someone at a normal conversational distance; do not assume that strong skin scent means wide projection. |
| Sillage | The scent trail associated with your movement away from an area | Consider whether fragrance remains noticeable after you have moved on, while recognizing that this varies with the formula and setting. |
These are practical observations, not laboratory measurements. A wearer can become accustomed to a fragrance and stop noticing it even while another person can still detect it. For a more useful comparison, ask someone you trust to give an unobtrusive impression at agreed times, and distinguish “I can smell it on my skin” from “it carries across the room.” Neither observation alone predicts how everyone else will experience it.
Aesop describes longevity and tenacity as interchangeable terms for the length of time a fragrance “lasts” on skin after application. Its guide also describes sillage as a French term for the wake or trail left behind. These definitions help clarify what to notice, but they do not create an objective score that lets you rank every bottle. Keep your own question specific: is the scent still detectable on your skin, can someone nearby notice it, or does it leave a trail when you move?
How to compare two fragrances on your own skin
When deciding between an EDP and EDT—or between two fragrances with different labels—compare the specific bottles under similar conditions. Aesop recommends sampling on the body, allowing a fragrance to develop, and avoiding rubbing after application. The following approach keeps the decision focused on the wear time and scent radius you actually want.

- Choose the use case first. Decide whether you care most about scent remaining detectable later, being noticeable nearby, or leaving a more apparent trail. Those goals are not interchangeable.
- Apply each fragrance to skin. A paper strip can help you compare initial impressions, but it cannot show exactly how either fragrance will behave on your skin. Follow the product’s directions and use a similar, modest amount for each comparison.
- Do not rub the application area. Let the fragrance sit and develop rather than trying to speed the process by rubbing it into the skin.
- Observe more than the opening. Make a note soon after application, then check again later. Record whether you can detect it close to your skin and whether it is noticeable at a conversational distance. There is no need to assign an unsupported universal hour or distance score.
- Compare like with like. Test in similar environments and at similar temperatures, with a similar amount applied. If one trial is in warm weather and another in a cool room, the conditions may explain part of the difference.
- Repeat if the choice matters. One wear can be affected by the day’s temperature, your skin, or how much you applied. A second trial can help you determine whether a perceived difference is consistent for you.
For a simple comparison record, note the fragrance, where and how much you applied, the setting, and what you noticed at each check-in. Keep observations separate: “detectable on my skin” is a longevity note; “noticeable to someone nearby” is a projection note. You do not need a precise timer or a numeric distance to make a useful personal decision. The point is to compare both options in a way that reflects how you plan to wear them.
If you are comparing two versions of what appears to be the same scent, first confirm that the maker describes them as the same formula at different concentrations. A label comparison alone does not show that the ingredients and proportions are otherwise identical. Differences in the scent profile may be as relevant as the EDP or EDT designation.
A retailer or fragrance house may offer fragrance samples or discovery sets, which can make it easier to wear a scent more than once before choosing a full bottle. The value of sampling is practical: it lets you observe how the scent develops on your own skin and in your usual environment. Availability and price vary, so check the seller’s current offer rather than assuming a particular set or price.

Choose around the result you want
If your priority is longer wear, EDP is a reasonable starting point because it generally has a higher fragrance-concentrate share. Treat that as a tendency and test the specific fragrance. If your priority is projection, do not choose by concentration alone; try the scent at the distance and in the setting that matter to you.
Account for where you will wear it
A fragrance that carries strongly may be welcome outdoors or in a social setting but less suitable where people sit close together. In a shared office, classroom, vehicle, or other enclosed space, a close-wearing scent or a smaller application may be more comfortable for people nearby. That is a setting choice, not evidence that EDT is always subtle or EDP always overpowering.
Consider the whole scent, not just the format
The EDP and EDT labels do not tell you whether the fragrance itself suits your taste. Compare the actual scent profile and how it changes on your skin. A fragrance you enjoy wearing at a moderate scent radius may be a better choice for your routine than one that has a higher concentration but does not smell right to you.

Use samples before committing
If a retailer or fragrance house offers samples or a discovery set, testing a small amount over more than one wear can help you evaluate the scent on your own skin and in your usual environment. No particular sample set is endorsed here. The useful comparison is not simply which bottle is labeled EDP; it is which specific fragrance gives you the balance of scent, wear time, and projection you want.

The concentration descriptions alone do not establish which format costs less, is a better value, or gives more wears per bottle. Price, bottle size, and product availability are specific to the fragrance and seller. Compare the exact options you are considering, and weigh the scent and performance you experience against the price you are quoted. A higher concentration label is not, by itself, proof of better value.
Common assumptions that lead to a bad comparison
- “EDP always lasts longer.” It often does, but performance varies by formula and the wearer’s conditions. The category label is not a guarantee.
- “EDP projects farther.” Longevity and projection are separate outcomes. A higher concentrate share does not establish a specific distance or scent radius.
- “The percentage tells me exactly how it will wear.” Concentration is one factor. The specific formula, application, skin, heat, and surroundings also matter.
- “A strong opening proves it will last.” An initial impression does not answer how long the fragrance stays perceptible. Let it develop and check again later.
- “I stopped smelling it, so it has disappeared.” Your own perception is not a perfect measure of what others can detect. If that distinction matters, ask another person rather than repeatedly applying more.
- “The generic concentration range settles a product-specific question.” Published ranges differ by source, and a brand’s broad description cannot substitute for information about the exact bottle.
- “EDP and EDT versions must be identical except for strength.” The label does not establish that the rest of the formula or scent profile is the same. Check what the maker says about the particular versions.
- “More projection is always better.” A larger scent radius may not suit a close, enclosed setting. Decide what is appropriate for where you plan to wear the fragrance.
Why wear time matters to fragrance buyers
The Fragrance Foundation’s September 2021 Fragrance Insights presentation cited The NPD Group’s 2021 Consumer Fragrance Report for a historical finding: nearly 80% of fragrance consumers considered “long lasting” important or extremely important when purchasing fragrance. That is a 2021 industry-research figure, not a current market estimate. It helps explain why longevity is a common buying question, but it does not show that EDP will satisfy every buyer better than EDT—or that longer wear is the right priority for every setting.
Bottom line for EDP vs. EDT
EDP generally has a higher fragrance-concentrate share and often lasts longer, but the effect depends on the particular formula and conditions. There is no universal winner for projection. Compare the exact scents on skin, let them develop without rubbing, and judge longevity separately from how far each one carries.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which lasts longer, eau de parfum or eau de toilette?
Eau de parfum often lasts longer because it generally has a higher fragrance-concentrate share. That is a tendency, not a guarantee: longevity varies with the specific formula, application, skin, heat, and surroundings.
Does EDP project more than EDT?
There is no universal winner. Projection is how far a scent is detectable, and concentration alone cannot predict it. A specific EDT may project more than a specific EDP, so compare the actual fragrances.

How many hours does EDP or EDT last?
There is no dependable hour range that applies to every EDP or EDT. The label does not establish a product’s exact wear time. Test the specific fragrance on your skin and check it at different points after application.
What do EDP and EDT percentages mean?
They refer generally to the share of fragrance concentrate relative to the alcohol base, with EDP usually higher than EDT. Published descriptions vary: Jean Paul Gaultier’s US Help Center lists 5–15% for EDT, while Amouage describes its own EDP offerings as 20–30%. These are brand-specific descriptions, not universal legal ranges.
Are EDP and EDT versions of a fragrance the same scent at different strengths?
The labels alone do not establish that the formulas are otherwise identical. Check the maker’s product information for the specific versions and compare their scent profiles on skin.
How can I compare longevity and projection fairly?
Sample each fragrance on skin, use a similar amount, avoid rubbing, and let it develop. Compare under similar temperatures and settings. Check how long it remains perceptible on your skin separately from whether someone nearby can detect it.
Is EDP always a better value than EDT?
Not necessarily. Concentration does not establish price or value. Compare the specific bottle sizes, prices, scent, and performance that matter to you; a higher concentration label alone is not proof of a better buy.
What are longevity, projection, and sillage?
Longevity (or tenacity) is how long a fragrance remains perceptible on skin. Projection is how far it can be detected from the wearer. Sillage is the scent trail associated with moving away; the terms overlap in everyday use, but none provides a universal performance score.
The Bottom Line
EDP often lasts longer than EDT, but neither label guarantees a specific wear time or projection. Formula, ingredients, application, skin, heat, and setting all matter. Sample the specific fragrances on your skin, let them develop without rubbing, and assess longevity separately from scent radius.
