EasyEngine is the better fit when you want an NGINX-first, self-hosted WordPress VPS workflow with explicit backup, firewall, logging, monitoring and team controls. ServerPilot is the better fit when you prefer a hosted control plane that manages servers at your chosen cloud provider, offers one-click WordPress, app isolation, several PHP versions and a predictable server-plus-app bill.
Neither product removes every VPS responsibility. You still own the cloud instance, WordPress configuration, plugins, themes, credentials and application-level security. The deciding questions are how much infrastructure control you want, who will operate backups, how many sites you will host, what your team needs to see, and whether compatibility with Apache-style .htaccess rules matters.

What EasyEngine provides
EasyEngine is a management platform for WordPress and other sites running on your own VPS. Its documented stack includes NGINX, PHP, MariaDB, Redis, WP-CLI and MailHog. Sites can be WordPress, PHP or static HTML, and the dashboard exposes SSL, caching, PHP-version management, backups, SSH/SFTP access, firewall settings, logs, monitoring and developer tools.
At the server level, EasyEngine can import an Ubuntu machine over SSH or provision a new machine on AWS, DigitalOcean or Hetzner. The server-management documentation describes preconfigured NGINX, PHP and caching, health and performance graphs, firewall protection, SSH-key management, server logs and a permanent activity timeline. The documentation says any Ubuntu server can be added; dashboard provisioning currently requires Ubuntu 24.04 for newly provisioned machines.

EasyEngine’s operating model
You operate the VPS and select the cloud account, region, instance size and operating-system lifecycle. EasyEngine supplies an administrative layer that standardizes the web stack and presents routine actions in a dashboard and CLI. This is useful when you want direct control of NGINX configuration, system access and data location, but it means you remain responsible for the underlying provider account, capacity planning and recovery plan.
What ServerPilot provides
ServerPilot is a hosted control plane for servers at the cloud provider of your choice. Its public web tier uses NGINX, while Apache runs internally for compatibility with WordPress software that expects .htaccess or mod_rewrite. The platform supports multiple PHP versions, PHP-FPM process scaling, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, MySQL, one-click WordPress, application migration, root access and an API.
ServerPilot’s security documentation describes automated updates, an iptables firewall, no exposed management ports, separate system users and filesystem ACLs for application isolation, unprivileged PHP processes and AutoSSL certificates from Let’s Encrypt. You still manage the VPS relationship with your cloud provider, and you still control the WordPress code and data.
ServerPilot’s operating model

These architectures are not an apples-to-apples performance test. Request latency depends on CPU and memory, PHP version, database workload, object and page caching, storage, geographic distance, plugin behavior and traffic patterns. NGINX or Apache labels alone cannot identify a faster WordPress site.

Backups and disaster recovery
EasyEngine’s documented path
EasyEngine explicitly supports S3-compatible storage, manual or daily backups, downloadable backup files and one-click restore. That gives an operator a visible sequence: select or configure backup storage, schedule or start a backup, confirm that an artifact exists outside the VPS, and use the restore action when a site needs to be rolled back.

Keep credentials for the S3-compatible destination separate from the VPS so a compromised machine cannot erase every copy.

Security: infrastructure versus WordPress
Both products automate important infrastructure controls, but neither can make an insecure WordPress installation safe by itself.

ServerPilot’s pricing page, accessed on October 15, 2026, lists hourly billing at the following rates:

For illustration, five apps on one Economy server calculate to $7.50 per month before the VPS bill ($5 plus five times $0.50). Twenty apps across three Economy servers calculate to $25 per month before the VPS bill ($15 plus twenty times $0.50). Actual charges are hourly, so these monthly equivalents are planning figures rather than a promise of a fixed invoice.
The EasyEngine feature and documentation pages link to plans and pricing but do not provide a directly comparable numeric schedule in the material available for this article. Check EasyEngine’s current billing page immediately before purchase and include any server, user, site or support limits in your total-cost calculation. Do not assume that a free or lower headline price includes cloud compute, storage, backups or monitoring services.
Hosting multiple WordPress sites on one VPS
Both tools can manage multiple applications on a single machine, but capacity is determined by the workload rather than the dashboard’s site count. Estimate memory for the operating system, database, PHP-FPM workers, object cache, web server and traffic spikes. A site with heavy WooCommerce activity, image processing or scheduled jobs can consume more resources than several brochure sites.

When one VPS is sensible
- Sites have predictable traffic and compatible maintenance windows.
- You can isolate credentials and limit each application’s filesystem access.
- You have tested what happens when one site’s PHP workers or database queries consume the available memory.
- You can restore a single site without rebuilding unrelated applications.
When to split servers
- Customers require hard operational separation or independent maintenance windows.
- One application is noisy, resource-intensive or business-critical.
- You need different operating-system, PHP or network policies.
- A failure domain shared by all sites would be unacceptable.
ServerPilot’s per-app pricing makes the incremental software cost explicit as site count rises. EasyEngine’s cost shape depends on its current plan and the VPS provider, so compare the complete monthly bill rather than only the management layer.

Setup workflows
EasyEngine: import or provision, then create sites
- Choose an Ubuntu VPS or use the dashboard provisioning option for AWS, DigitalOcean or Hetzner. For newly provisioned dashboard servers, use Ubuntu 24.04 as currently required by the documentation.
- For an existing machine, use the server-import workflow and provide SSH access with a key. Confirm that the server meets the documented Ubuntu and access requirements before changing production DNS.
- Review the server overview for health graphs, system statistics, firewall status, SSH keys and logs.
- Create a site in the EE Sites workflow and select the required site type, PHP version, SSL and caching options.
- Point DNS only after the web server responds correctly on the temporary hostname or test address.
- Configure S3-compatible backup storage, choose manual or daily scheduling and perform an initial backup.
- Invite teammates with the least privilege they need, then review the activity timeline after each production change.
ServerPilot: connect a provider VPS, then deploy applications
- Create a VPS with your chosen cloud provider, selecting enough CPU, memory and storage for the expected WordPress workload.
- Connect the machine to ServerPilot using the documented get-started process and retain root access for emergency administration.
- Choose the PHP version and PHP-FPM process settings appropriate for the applications you will run.
- Create an application and use the one-click WordPress option or migrate an existing application.

Migrations, failures and recovery
Moving an existing site
Inventory the WordPress core version, PHP extensions, database engine, cron jobs, uploads, web-server rules, scheduled tasks and DNS records. Lower the DNS time-to-live before migration, copy the database and files, test with a hosts-file override or temporary address, and only then change DNS. Keep the old server untouched until forms, logins, media, cron jobs, redirects and payment or email integrations have been verified.
If a site returns a 500 error
- Check the PHP and web-server logs first; EasyEngine exposes live NGINX, PHP and WordPress logs, while ServerPilot log viewing depends on Business or First Class.
- Confirm that the selected PHP version supports the active plugins and themes.
- Disable the newest plugin or theme change, preferably through a controlled maintenance procedure, and retest.
- Check filesystem ownership, application isolation rules and available disk and memory.
- Restore the last known-good backup only after preserving logs and identifying the change that caused the failure.
If the VPS is compromised
Isolate the machine at the provider level, rotate SSH, database, API and WordPress credentials from a clean device, preserve logs, and rebuild from a known-good image when practical. Restore only verified files and databases, update every component, inspect administrator accounts and plugins, and review firewall and SSH-key rules. A control panel can reduce exposure and automate updates, but it cannot certify that an already compromised WordPress application is clean.
Which platform is easier for a non-admin?
ServerPilot generally presents the gentler learning curve for someone who wants a hosted dashboard, one-click WordPress and fewer decisions about the underlying NGINX/PHP layout. Root access remains available, but routine application tasks are centralized.
EasyEngine is approachable when its documented workflows match your needs, yet it assumes more willingness to understand Ubuntu, SSH keys, NGINX behavior, S3-compatible storage and VPS capacity. Its advantage is visibility and control: you can see and manage more of the server lifecycle, assign team permissions and operate a documented restore path.
