EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is a file-recovery application that scans storage for data that is no longer visible through the normal file system. EaseUS describes it as suitable for deleted files, formatted media, lost partitions and some system-failure situations on Windows and Mac.

The most important practical rule is to stop using the affected storage and save any recovered files to a different, healthy drive. The Windows Free edition can save up to 2GB, while the Trial edition scans and previews results but does not save them. Those limits, device compatibility and the condition of the storage determine whether the software is an appropriate first step.

What EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard does

Data Recovery Wizard searches a storage device for information that ordinary file-system browsing can no longer present. A scan may find directory entries that were deleted, remnants left after formatting, partition information that is no longer visible, or file content identified directly from storage sectors. You select results, preview what the program can read, and copy suitable files to another destination.

EaseUS presents the product as supporting recovery from computers and removable media. Its documentation describes scenarios including accidental deletion, formatted storage, lost partitions and an operating system that will not start. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent measurement of success rates. A scan result or preview shows that the software found readable information; it does not guarantee that every file will open or that an entire disk can be restored.

How a scan finds files

In a normal scan, the application examines the file-system structures that describe names, folders and locations. If those structures are partly missing, a deeper or signature-based search can examine sectors for recognizable file patterns. EaseUS calls its signature-oriented mode RAW Recovery. Because this method may not have the original directory information, results can appear with generic names, without their original folders, or in a large list that requires manual checking.

Devices and file systems EaseUS lists

EaseUS’s Windows support manual lists the following storage categories. Actual availability depends on the edition, operating system and how the device is connected, so confirm the requirements for your exact setup before relying on a listed capability.

Device category Examples of situations Important qualification
Internal hard drives and SSDs Deleted files, formatting, inaccessible partitions Do not continue using the drive if lost data is important.
External hard drives Accidental deletion or a reformatted external volume Use a separate destination for recovered files.
USB drives Lost or deleted documents and media Connect directly and avoid copying new data onto the device.
Memory cards and cameras Deleted photographs or a card that was reformatted Stop taking pictures or recording video immediately.
RAID and NAS storage Logical loss or missing volumes Complex or damaged arrays may require specialist assessment.

The same manual lists FAT variants, exFAT, NTFS, NTFS5, EXT2/3/4, HFS+, and ReFS file systems. A listed file system does not mean every implementation, encryption scheme, controller or failure mode is supported. Verify the current edition and platform documentation, especially when the disk was created on another operating system.

Which data-loss situations are realistic candidates?

Recently deleted files

Deletion usually removes references to a file before the underlying space is reused. A scan may therefore locate the file, particularly when the device has not been used since deletion. Every download, installation, system update or saved document can occupy that space, reducing what can be reconstructed.

Formatted storage

Formatting replaces or rebuilds file-system information. A scan can sometimes identify content left on the media, but the original names and folder tree may not survive. Do not format the device again or initialize it in response to an error.

Lost partitions

If a partition entry disappears while the data areas remain intact, software may find files outside the currently mounted volume. Partition-table damage, overlapping partitions and encryption make the case more complex; avoid creating a replacement partition before attempting recovery.

System failure

EaseUS describes recovery scenarios involving a computer that cannot boot. In that situation, running software from the same failing system disk can add writes and may not be possible. Use another working computer or the vendor’s documented bootable approach only after protecting the source data.

Free and Trial editions: what you actually get

EaseUS’s Windows activation guidance distinguishes the Free and Trial editions by what they permit after scanning. Both can scan and preview files detected by the software, but their saving limits differ.

Edition Scan Preview Save recovered files
Windows Free Yes Yes Up to 2GB
Windows Trial Yes Yes No
Mac Free Check the current Mac listing Check the current Mac listing EaseUS states that free recovery from SD cards is not supported.

The 2GB allowance applies to files saved by the Windows Free edition; it is not a promise that a 2GB file, or any particular file, will be intact. Trial mode can be useful when you need to inspect whether the required files appear before deciding whether a paid activation is necessary, but it cannot be used to save those results. Make sure the installer is the Free edition if you intend to test an actual save.

Current prices and licensing terms are not established here and can change by platform, edition and promotion. Check the current official listing before paying, and confirm that the edition includes the operating system and device you need.

Protect the source drive before scanning

The first recovery decision is not a scan setting; it is preventing further writes. EaseUS warns that saving recovered files on the source drive can overwrite the very data structures and content you are trying to recover.

  • Stop downloading, installing applications or saving documents to the affected device.
  • Do not format, initialize, repartition or run “repair” operations that modify the volume.
  • Prepare a different, healthy drive with enough free space for the files you expect to copy.
  • If the device is clicking, repeatedly disconnecting, unusually hot or disappearing, stop repeated power cycles and consider professional assessment.

Reading a failing disk can worsen its condition. For irreplaceable data, the safest choice may be to preserve the device rather than repeatedly scanning it.

Standard recovery procedure

  1. Disconnect unnecessary activity. Shut down programs that might write to the source and, where practical, remove the device from normal use.
  2. Connect the source carefully. Use a reliable USB or SATA connection. If the device is not detected at all, do not repeatedly reconnect it while it is making abnormal noises.
  3. Install or run the software from a different storage location. Installing recovery software onto the same volume can overwrite deleted data. Use another internal volume or an external drive when possible.
  4. Select the affected device or partition. Identify it by capacity and connection rather than guessing from a drive letter that may have changed.
  5. Start the scan. Allow the initial scan to complete. A deeper search can take substantially longer, especially on large disks or devices with read errors.
  6. Filter and preview results. Use file type, name, location or date filters where available. Open previews of the most important files; a filename alone is not evidence that the content is usable.
  7. Choose a separate destination. Select the healthy drive prepared earlier, never the source volume. Recovered files should be copied, not moved, so the original media remains unchanged.
  8. Verify the copies. Open representative documents, photographs and videos from the destination. Check important folders and compare file sizes before deciding that the recovery is complete.

If the scan finds only partial files, missing names or no useful results, do not respond by writing more data to the source. Move to an image-based or professional workflow instead.

Using a disk image for a faulty Windows drive

EaseUS documents a Windows workflow in which you create a disk image, scan the image and save recovered files to separate healthy storage. An image is a sector-level copy used as the scan source, allowing you to work from one captured state rather than repeatedly reading the original.

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive for Windows, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 for PC & Mac, Plug and Play Ready - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN
  • High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
  1. Attach a healthy destination drive with capacity at least comparable to the source data you need to image.
  2. Create the disk image using the product’s imaging function, choosing the failing disk as the source and the healthy drive as the image destination.
  3. Disconnect or set aside the original when the image is complete, if the hardware condition makes further reads risky.
  4. Open the image in Data Recovery Wizard and run the scan against the image rather than the original disk.
  5. Save recovered files to a third location or to storage that is not the image file itself.

Imaging can take significant time and requires enough destination capacity. It does not repair physical damage or guarantee a successful recovery; unreadable sectors may remain unreadable in the image.

What RAW Recovery changes

RAW Recovery examines data sectors and reconstructs files by recognizable signatures when file-system directory information is damaged. This can help when a volume appears RAW or when ordinary scanning cannot use the original directory tree.

The trade-off is organization. Signature recovery may return generic filenames, omit folders and produce duplicates or fragments. Plan time to sort the output manually, and keep the original device untouched while reviewing the results. Preview important files before spending time on a large export.

Network drives and connection limits

EaseUS’s Windows FAQ states that the software does not work with network drives. Its suggested workaround is to connect the storage directly through USB or SATA. A NAS may be listed as a supported category, but that does not make every network share scannable in place; the exact device, access method and edition matter.

If direct connection is impossible, do not assume that mapping a network share as a drive letter changes its underlying support. Check the current compatibility information for your operating system, file system and hardware before attempting a recovery.

When software recovery is the wrong next step

EaseUS identifies RAW drives, lost partitions, RAID damage and an unbootable operating system as cases that may need specialist manual recovery. The need is more urgent when the device has physical symptoms, contains the only copy of irreplaceable data, or cannot stay connected long enough to complete a read.

  • Use software first only when: the device is stable, detected consistently, and the data has a replaceable backup or manageable value.
  • Pause and seek a qualified recovery specialist when: the drive clicks or grinds, repeatedly drops offline, has severe mechanical damage, or holds unique business, legal or personal records.
  • Ask before authorizing work: whether the provider will image the device, what happens if the attempt fails, how your original media is handled, and what charges apply.

No reviewed EaseUS material establishes a likely outcome or price for an individual manual-recovery case. A specialist can assess the hardware and explain options; neither a software scan nor a service assessment should be treated as a guarantee.

A practical decision checklist

  • Identify the operating system, edition and file system before assuming compatibility.
  • Record the exact files and folders that matter most.
  • Stop all writes to the source and prepare separate healthy destination storage.
  • Use preview to judge whether the needed files appear intact.
  • Remember that Windows Free saves up to 2GB, while Trial is preview-only.
  • Use an image workflow for a faulty but readable Windows disk.
  • Expect manual sorting after RAW Recovery.
  • Escalate physically failing, RAID-damaged or uniquely valuable cases before repeated scans.

EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can be a reasonable logical-recovery tool when the device is stable and the edition supports the platform and media. Its value is determined less by the scan button than by stopping overwrite activity, previewing the files you need and copying them to safe storage. Treat every capability as a vendor statement, verify compatibility for your exact setup, and do not mistake a detected filename for a guaranteed recovery.
