No—EA has not announced that its college-football series is canceled. EA SPORTS College Football 27 launched worldwide on July 9, 2026, keeping the franchise active. However, an October 13 report from Insider Gaming said sources close to EA fear the series could be discontinued within five years as development expenses and payments for college-athlete name, image and likeness (NIL) rights rise.
That is a source-based warning, not a confirmed cancellation plan. EA has not publicly announced College Football 28 in the material available here, either.

Why the franchise returned
EA and the Collegiate Licensing Company announced the return of EA SPORTS college-football simulation games in 2021. That agreement described EA as the “exclusive developer of simulation college football video game experiences,” putting collegiate licensing and athlete participation at the center of the product rather than treating them as optional add-ons.
What the cancellation report says
The October 13, 2026 Insider Gaming report says multiple people close to EA are concerned that the franchise could be discontinued within five years. It identifies two pressures: the cost of developing each annual game and the rising price of NIL agreements with college athletes.

College-football games require permission to use university identities, conferences, team marks and player likenesses. NIL deals add direct compensation for participating athletes, and those terms can change as the market develops.

Front Office Sports reported in January 2026 that OneTeam Partners, which helped facilitate player NIL agreements, said newer EA contract terms were no longer sufficient. The earlier arrangement reported for 2024 paid each participating player a $600 flat fee plus a copy of the game. That figure is a historical reported structure, not a verified per-player rate for College Football 27 and not a measure of EA’s total licensing expense.
The available evidence therefore supports a cost concern but not a precise estimate. A larger roster, broader participation, renegotiated terms or additional legal and licensing work could increase the cost of an annual release, while sales and ongoing spending would determine whether EA considers that investment worthwhile.

What the monetization backlash reveals
Insider Gaming reported that College Football 27 launched with paid progression options in Road to Glory and Online Dynasty. On July 11, 2026, it reported that EA removed those options after players objected.
EA’s public explanation, reproduced by Insider Gaming, said: “Your feedback on Road to Glory and Dynasty is that we’ve missed the mark with the introduction of paid progression options.” The reversal does not prove that the series is unprofitable, but it shows how quickly monetization decisions can create pressure around a licensed sports game whose audience expects a traditional progression system.

Does EA’s corporate material point to an ending?
An SEC-filed document describes EA collegiate activations involving university-branded content, student-athlete participation and an NIL engagement strategy around College Football 26. That filing shows that collegiate rights remain part of EA’s commercial planning. It does not promise a future installment or contradict the reported concern about rising costs.
Will there be College Football 28?
There is no confirmed College Football 28 announcement in the available official material. That leaves three different statements with different levels of certainty:
- Confirmed: College Football 27 launched on July 9, 2026 and the series is currently active.
