The oldest widely accepted visible evidence of life is preserved in the Dresser Formation of Western Australia’s Pilbara Craton. Stromatolites and related microbialites there formed about 3.48 billion years ago, and their biological interpretation is supported by layered structures, organic matter, possible microfossils, microbial remains, and distinctive carbon and sulfur isotope patterns. The record is not known to be disappearing wholesale, but individual sites can be permanently damaged by collecting, careless visits, and expanding development.
What the 3.48-billion-year-old rocks record
The Dresser Formation contains ancient deposits made in hot-spring and shallow-water environments. Microbial communities grew across sediment surfaces, trapping particles and producing minerals. Over time, those mats became laminated or mound-shaped structures called microbialites. Stromatolites are the microbialites that show internal laminae or layering.
Some of the largest cone-shaped stromatolites in the Trendall Reserve reach up to 1 metre high. Their size is striking, but size alone does not establish a biological origin. Scientists assess several independent clues together:

High-resolution analyses described by the Natural History Museum and studies in Nature Communications have made the Dresser record one of the strongest candidates for the oldest visible evidence of life. The careful formulation is “oldest convincing” or “oldest widely accepted” evidence, not an uncontested claim that no earlier life existed. Rocks older than 3.48 billion years are rare, heavily altered, and difficult to interpret, so the first life may have existed before this record without leaving recognizable traces.

Why scientists consider it unusually convincing
Ancient structures can be produced by non-biological chemistry, and isolated microscopic shapes can be misread after billions of years of heating, burial, and deformation. The Dresser interpretation instead rests on convergence: morphology, preserved organic material, possible microbial remains, and isotope chemistry occur in rocks whose hot-spring setting is compatible with microbial growth.
Research reported in 2017 also extended the known record of inhabited terrestrial hot springs to roughly 3 billion years ago. That matters because hydrothermal systems are considered plausible habitats on the early Earth and useful analogues for environments that may once have existed on Mars.

Where the evidence is protected
The best-known localities lie around the historic North Pole mining area in the Pilbara. The Geological Survey of Western Australia identifies six early-life localities as State Geoheritage Reserves: Buick, Trendall, Awramik, Lowe, Schopf, and Hickman. Trendall Reserve is described as especially convincing evidence of microbial activity.
Geoheritage status does not mean unrestricted public sampling. Activities and collecting in these reserves require permission, and visitors are instructed to leave fossils and structures in place. Public interpretation is available through the Dawn of Life Trail and the Origins gallery at WA Museum Boola Bardip, allowing people to learn about the sites without removing material.

What “at risk of disappearing” means
The warning concerns physical damage to finite outcrops, not evidence that every stromatolite is currently vanishing. A 1993 Western Australian Government statement identified pressure from scientific researchers, rock hunters, and tourists. It warned that over-zealous collectors or visitors who did not understand the significance of the formations could permanently damage the site.
The regional threat is broader than fossil collecting. The Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority describes rapid and continuing mining and infrastructure development across the Pilbara and forecasts further development. Roads, earthworks, vehicle access, extraction, and associated construction can alter or cover geological exposures even when no one intends to damage a fossil.

No current source establishes an annual rate of fossil loss, a quantified climate-change contribution, or a complete risk ranking for every Pilbara microbialite locality. The defensible conclusion is that the formations are irreplaceable and vulnerable to localized disturbance while development pressure remains high.

- Obtain permission before conducting activities or sampling in a State Geoheritage Reserve.
- Do not collect, chip, climb on, or move stromatolite material.
- Stay on designated routes and follow site-specific instructions, especially near fragile outcrops.
- Use established interpretation at the Dawn of Life Trail and WA Museum Boola Bardip instead of handling specimens.
- Report suspected damage or unauthorized collecting to the relevant Western Australian authorities.
In 2024, the Western Australian Government announced the Purungunya Conservation Estate to protect internationally renowned Pilbara carbonate stromatolites alongside Nyamal cultural and natural heritage. That designation adds a major layer of protection, although conservation still depends on effective management, compliance, and careful planning around surrounding development.
Why NASA and Mars researchers study the Pilbara rocks
NASA describes the Pilbara stromatolites as the oldest confirmed fossilized lifeforms on Earth and has worked with the European Space Agency, the Australian Space Agency, and CSIRO to improve techniques for recognizing ancient life on Mars. The goal is not to assume that a Martian rock is biological because it looks layered. Instead, researchers test whether a candidate feature has multiple, independent biosignatures and whether its geological setting could support life.
The Dresser Formation provides a terrestrial training ground: it preserves ancient hydrothermal and shallow-water environments, mineral textures, organic residues, and isotope relationships in rocks that have endured immense geological time. Learning which combinations are genuinely biological helps guide rover observations, sample-selection strategies, and eventual laboratory analyses of Martian material.

How to judge claims about the “oldest life”
When a new fossil claim appears, check the same six questions scientists use for the Pilbara record:
- Age: How old are the rocks, and how was that age measured?
- Biosignature type: Is the evidence structural, organic, microscopic, isotopic, or a combination?
- Setting: Did the deposit form in a hot spring, shallow sea, lake, or another environment compatible with life?
- Biological confidence: Have non-biological explanations been tested?
- Access and protection: Is the locality legally protected, and does sampling require permission?
- Local risk: Could collecting, construction, mining, erosion, or unmanaged tourism damage the exposure?
Using those criteria prevents a single attractive shape from being presented as proof. It also explains why the Dresser Formation remains so important: several lines of evidence reinforce one another, while the physical record remains vulnerable because it exists in exposed, finite rock.
