In EA SPORTS FC 26, a formation sets your team’s starting shape; team tactics and player roles or instructions determine how that shape behaves. Build a tactic by matching those settings to your squad and intended style, then adjust it based on what happens in matches. There is no source-backed universal “best” tactic: a setup that fits one group of players or mode may not suit another.
What a custom tactic changes
Think of a tactic as three connected layers rather than a formation code or a single defensive setting:

- Formation: where players are positioned to start and how many occupy each line.
- Team settings: the shared approach to building attacks and defending.
- Roles and focuses or instructions: the responsibilities and movements assigned to individuals within that team plan.
EA’s FC IQ overview identifies formation, defensive approach, and build-up style as core tactical settings. The formation gives you an initial arrangement, but it does not by itself say how the team will build forward, defend space, or use each player. For background on those components, see EA’s FC 25 Gameplay Deep Dive; for the FC 26 system changes, see EA’s FC 26 Gameplay Deep Dive.

This distinction matters when a tactic looks right on the formation screen but does not play as you expect. A player’s role can change the way they contribute, while the team settings establish the broader behavior around them. A formation is a starting reference, not a promise that every player will remain in a fixed spot throughout play.

Choose a formation for the shape you want
Start by deciding what the team should look like when it has the ball and when it is defending. Consider the number of players you want in each line, where you need passing options, and which areas your squad can cover. Then choose a formation that gives you a workable starting arrangement for that plan.
Do not select a formation just because a tactic guide labels it “best.” The available official material does not establish a universal ranking or a controlled comparison of formations. Instead, use these questions to judge fit:
- Does the starting shape give the players you rely on a place in the team?
- Does it provide the kind of support and spacing you want around the ball?
- Can your players carry out the defensive and attacking responsibilities you plan to assign?
- Does it suit the mode you are playing and the way you want to approach matches?
These are selection checks, not guarantees of results. A formation that looks useful on paper still needs team settings and individual assignments that work with your squad.

After choosing the starting shape, decide how the team should behave collectively. FC IQ treats build-up style and defensive approach as distinct parts of the tactical setup. Build-up style concerns the team’s approach to progressing attacks; defensive approach sets its shared defensive plan. Choose each with the other in mind rather than treating one as a substitute for the formation or player roles.
For example, ask what you want players to do when the team tries to advance, and what kind of defensive approach you want the group to use. Then check whether the players and roles in your formation can support those intentions. This is a way to organize your choices, not a claim that a particular combination is proven to be stronger.

EA describes two gameplay presets with different intended contexts. Competitive is tuned for head-to-head play, including Ultimate Team and Clubs; Authentic is aimed at modes such as Career. EA’s FC 26 New Gameplay Features page explains those contexts. The distinction can help you understand the kind of gameplay each preset targets, but it does not establish that any custom tactic is best under either preset.
Use FC 26 roles and focuses to assign responsibilities
In FC 26, player roles and focuses describe the kinds of responsibilities and movement you want from individuals within the team’s tactical plan. They are not simply a second formation: they help shape how a player contributes in relation to the starting arrangement and broader team behavior.
EA says the FC 26 FC IQ system adds roles and focuses, including Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback, and Box Crasher. EA also says players are less constrained by their assigned roles and can contribute beyond them; a Versatile focus was added. That flexibility means a role should guide your plan, not be read as a guarantee that a player will only perform one task or occupy one location.
When assigning a role or focus, think about the job you need filled and whether the player fits it. A useful assignment should support the shape and team settings you have chosen. If the team’s behavior does not match your intention, consider whether an individual responsibility, a team-wide setting, or the starting formation is the part that needs changing. Avoid changing all of them at once, or it will be harder to tell which adjustment affected the outcome.
Build a tactic in a deliberate sequence
Menu labels and paths can vary by mode or game build, so use the in-game tactics screens rather than relying on a universal button-by-button path. The sequence below focuses on decisions that apply across modes:

- Choose the mode and gameplay context. Decide whether you are setting up for a mode such as Ultimate Team, Clubs, or Career, and note whether you are using Competitive or Authentic gameplay where that choice applies.
- Pick the starting formation. Arrange the team around the lines and spaces you want to begin with. Check that the players you intend to use can fill the positions and responsibilities in your plan.
- Set build-up style and defensive approach. Decide on the team-wide behavior for progressing attacks and defending. Keep the choices connected to the formation and the kind of play you are trying to produce.
- Assign player roles and focuses or instructions. Give individuals responsibilities that complement the team plan. In FC 26, account for the flexibility EA describes: roles guide contributions but do not necessarily confine players to a single task.
- Review the whole setup. Check for conflicts between your intended shape, team-wide settings, and individual jobs. For instance, an individual assignment should make sense alongside the area and responsibility you need that player to cover.
- Try the tactic and make a focused change. Observe whether the team behaves as intended, identify one mismatch, and adjust the setting most directly related to it. Reassess before making another change.
This process helps you distinguish a structural issue from a player-assignment issue. It cannot predict a win rate or guarantee a particular match outcome; official sources reviewed do not publish custom-tactics effectiveness statistics.

EA FC Pro’s article “Play like Emre Yilmaz”, published November 9, 2023, describes a historical narrow-diamond tactic. The settings in that example were:
| Setting or assignment | Emre Yilmaz example |
|---|---|
| Defensive width | 40 |
| Depth | 71 |
| Build-up | Balanced |
| Passing | Direct passing |
| Attacking width | 1 |
| CDM | Stay back and cover center |
| One central midfielder | Stay back |
| CAM | Stay forward |
| Two strikers | Get in behind |
EA describes the compact attacking width as supporting close combinations and the depth as intended to support a high press. That explains the example’s intended logic; it does not establish that the settings will perform the same way in FC 26, with a different squad, or in a different mode. Treat the article as a historical case to study and adapt, not a tested FC 26 recommendation or proof that narrow-diamond tactics are generally superior.
If you borrow an idea from it, consider the relationship between the choices rather than copying the numbers blindly: the article pairs compact attacking width with close combinations and uses defensive assignments for specific midfield and forward jobs. Ask whether those aims match your team before using comparable settings.
Career Mode: Tactical Vision requirements are mode-specific
Career Mode has Tactical Vision rules that should not be assumed to apply in other modes. EA’s FC 26 Career Mode Deep Dive lists build-up requirements associated with Possession, Wing Play, and Counter Attack, and defensive-approach requirements associated with Park The Bus, Kick & Rush, and High Pressing. The exact requirements depend on the vision; use the relevant in-game Career Mode guidance rather than treating these labels as universal settings for every mode.

EA says Career Mode Tactical Vision requirements were relaxed. Roles are no longer requirements for a Tactical Vision, although coaches familiar with a vision can boost Role Familiarity. In practical terms, keep the Career Mode vision requirements separate from your wider decisions about how to assign roles: a role is not itself a required vision setting under the FC 26 rules described by EA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Save, share, and convert tactics codes
EA’s FC 26 gameplay notes say tactics codes can be saved and loaded across Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Kick-Off, Seasons, and Friendlies, with up to 10 saved codes. EA also states: “FC 25 tactics codes are compatible with FC 26 and will be converted to the FC26 format when applied.” The conversion means an FC 25 code can be applied in FC 26; it does not mean the tactic is automatically suited to your players, mode, or preferred play pattern.
Before adopting a code, check what formation, team settings, and player assignments it contains, then decide whether those choices fit your squad. A shared code is a starting point for review, not evidence that it will be effective for everyone. The current EA notes do not establish a performance ranking for codes or tactics.
How to compare two tactics fairly
When deciding between two setups, compare the parts that change how they function, rather than comparing only their formation names. A useful side-by-side review includes:
- Starting formation and spacing: what shape the players begin in and how the lines are arranged.
- Defensive approach: the team-wide defensive behavior each setup selects.
- Build-up style: the shared approach to moving attacks forward.
- Roles, focuses, and instructions: the responsibilities assigned to individuals and whether your players fit them.
- Mode and version: where and in which game version the tactic is being used, particularly when adapting an older code or example.
Use the comparison to decide which setup better fits your squad and intended style. The official material cited here provides examples and system descriptions, not a universal ranking or controlled evidence that one option wins more often.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting the formation alone to create a play style. It sets the initial shape; build-up, defensive approach, and individual roles also matter.
- Copying a historical example as if it were a current recommendation. The Emre Yilmaz article dates to 2023 and describes that specific example’s intent, not a tested FC 26 result.
- Treating Career Mode requirements as rules for every mode. EA’s Tactical Vision requirements are Career Mode-specific.
- Assuming a role locks a player into one behavior. EA describes FC 26 players as less constrained by roles and able to contribute beyond them.
- Changing several parts of the tactic at once. Make a focused adjustment so you can identify which choice better matches your intention.
- Confusing gameplay presets with tactical recommendations. Competitive and Authentic have different intended mode contexts; the preset descriptions do not prove that a particular tactic is best for either.
