E Ink announced Kaleido 4 on October 15, 2026, claiming major gains in color gamut, brightness, contrast, refresh speed and motion support. Hanvon’s M10C II is the first terminal product E Ink has identified with the new panel technology.
Kaleido 4 is not yet confirmed for a Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook reader. Those buying now should treat current color models as Kaleido 3 products unless the manufacturer explicitly names the panel generation.
What E Ink Kaleido 4 is
Kaleido 4 is E Ink’s next announced color e-paper platform. The October 15, 2026 announcement names Hanvon’s M10C II as the first terminal product using it, rather than naming a Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook device.
E Ink says Kaleido 4 uses a new oxide-TFT backplane designed to improve drive performance. The company’s chairman, Johnson Lee, described the platform as improving “color performance, brightness, contrast, paper-like reading experience and dynamic display capability.” That statement comes from an official Chinese-language release and describes E Ink’s positioning, not an independent test result.

How much better Kaleido 4 is than Kaleido 3
E Ink’s launch figures target the main compromises of color e-paper: muted colors, reduced reflectance, limited contrast and slow updates. The following numbers are manufacturer claims; the 27% speed figure applies specifically to the Hanvon M10C II implementation.

Kaleido 3, announced on April 7, 2022, supports 16 grayscale levels and 4,096 colors. E Ink lists 300 pixels per inch for grayscale and 150 ppi for color on its specified panel sizes, and reported 30% higher color saturation than Kaleido Plus. Those figures explain why Kaleido 4’s claimed gamut and reflectance improvements matter: color layers have traditionally looked less vivid and less bright than monochrome e-paper.

There is no independent hands-on benchmark in the announcement that verifies the new percentages. “More than twice the gamut” should therefore be read as a specification claim, not a guarantee that every reader will perceive a twofold visual improvement.

Yes, E Ink says Kaleido 4 supports video at up to 18 frames per second. That is a substantial change from the still-page focus of earlier color e-paper generations, but 18 fps is not television-quality motion and does not establish smooth playback for every application.

The only named implementation is Hanvon’s M10C II. Its processor, firmware, video player and refresh settings will determine whether the advertised rate is available in practice. A panel specification also says nothing about streaming-service support, digital-rights compatibility, speakers or battery endurance.
Which color readers use Kaleido 3 now?
PocketBook’s current catalog identifies the InkPad Color 3, Era Color, Verse Pro Color, InkPad Eo and Color Note as Kaleido 3 products. The InkPad Color 3 is a concrete example for buyers who want a color reader immediately:

Amazon announced its first color Kindle in 2024, but the cited announcement does not identify its display as Kaleido 4. No official announcement currently confirms Kaleido 4 adoption by Amazon, Kobo or PocketBook. A product described simply as “color E Ink” is not enough to establish which generation it uses.
Is Kaleido 4 worth waiting for?
Buy a current Kaleido 3 reader if you need one now
Kaleido 3 remains a documented, shipping platform with known color and grayscale resolutions. It is the practical choice for illustrated books, comics, notes and documents when an available device, a particular store ecosystem or a waterproof model matters more than the newest panel.

Wait if color quality or motion is your priority
Waiting makes sense if you can postpone a purchase and want to evaluate the claimed increase in gamut, reflectance, contrast or video capability. The first named product is Hanvon’s M10C II, so availability, regional release timing, price and software support still need to be established for each market.
Do not wait based on an assumed Kindle or Kobo upgrade
E Ink’s announcement does not provide a Kindle or Kobo launch date. Buying decisions should follow an official product specification, not a prediction that a familiar brand will adopt the newest panel.

- Confirm the panel generation. Look for “Kaleido 4” or “Kaleido 3” in the manufacturer’s specifications. “Color e-paper” alone is insufficient.
- Check separate grayscale and color resolution. Kaleido 3 examples use 300 ppi grayscale and 150 ppi color; text and line art can therefore render differently from monochrome screens.
- Verify front-light behavior. Ask whether the color layer, front light and warm-light controls are described for the exact model, not merely for the product family.
- Match the ecosystem. Check supported ebook stores, file formats, library lending, note export and operating-system update policy.
- Validate hardware fit. Compare screen size, stylus support, waterproofing, storage and battery claims for the exact regional edition.
- Check the return policy. Color e-paper appearance varies with lighting and viewing angle. A return window is useful if the screen looks dimmer or less saturated than expected.
- Confirm regional availability and warranty. The M10C II is the first named Kaleido 4 terminal product, but launch timing and warranty coverage can differ by country.
What the announcement means for buyers
Kaleido 4 is an official platform announcement with ambitious manufacturer claims, not proof that the next Kindle, Kobo or PocketBook will use it. The meaningful near-term comparison is between a known Kaleido 3 reader available today and a Kaleido 4 device whose real-world screen quality, software and market availability still depend on the individual product. Treat the panel generation as one specification among several, and verify the complete model before ordering.
