E Ink Kaleido 4 is a reported next-generation color display intended to improve the three compromises buyers notice most in current color e-readers: muted color, limited contrast and slow refresh. The report comes from Wilson’s Media, but E Ink has not published a Kaleido 4 specification sheet or confirmed shipping products in the available information. Today’s color readers, including Kobo’s Libra Colour and Clara Colour, use the established Kaleido 3 architecture.

What Kaleido 4 is—and what is not confirmed

Kaleido is E Ink’s color-filter display family. A Kaleido panel places a color filter array over Carta black-and-white electronic-ink film. The filter creates color while the underlying ink layer remains responsible for the crispest monochrome text.

Wilson’s Media reports that Kaleido 4 improves color reproduction, contrast and screen-refresh speed compared with Kaleido 3. Those are reported targets, not independently verified specifications: no official Kaleido 4 product page, resolution table, color count, update-time chart or shipping-device list is established here. Buyers should therefore treat announcements, retailer listings and device claims as provisional until E Ink or a manufacturer publishes final specifications.

How Kaleido 3 works today

E Ink’s April 7, 2022 description of Kaleido 3 identifies it as a Print Color ePaper design combining a color filter array with Carta ink film. It supports 16 grayscale levels and 4,096 colors, with color saturation stated as 30 percent higher than Kaleido Plus.

Saturation change versus Kaleido Plus 30 percent higher, according to E Ink (2022)

The 150 ppi color layer is the key visual compromise. Black text rendered through the 300 ppi ink layer can look sharp, while colored illustrations, comic panels and highlighted areas are built from a lower-resolution filter pattern. Color E Ink therefore does not look as uniformly detailed as a 300 ppi monochrome page, even when both are on the same screen.

Kaleido 4 versus Kaleido 3

The reported upgrade addresses the symptoms users can see rather than announcing a confirmed numerical leap. Better color reproduction could make covers and illustrations less washed out; improved contrast could separate pale tints from the page background; faster refresh could reduce the visible delay when turning pages, scrolling or switching modes.

Until final hardware is announced, “better” should not be interpreted as “the same as a color LCD” or as proof that color reaches 300 ppi. The most meaningful test will be whether a finished device preserves crisp black text while making color areas darker, cleaner and quicker to update.

Gallery 3 is a different color-E Ink approach

E Ink Gallery 3 is not a later Kaleido version. It uses a full-color architecture and publishes a 300 ppi resolution. E Ink lists several update modes, showing the trade-off between speed and color quality:

  • READ COMFORTABLY, ALWAYS - Ergonomically designed with page-turn buttons, left/right screen rotation, full font size and margin customization, and landscape mode
  • IPX8 WATERPROOF EREADER - Full waterproof protection and meets requirements of IPX8 rating - waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 meters of water
  • BETTER BY DESIGN - Thoughtfully made with recycled and ocean-bound plastic and repairability to waterproof protection
Gallery 3 mode Published update time
Black and white 350 ms
Fast color 500 ms
Standard color 750–1,000 ms
Best color 1,500 ms

Gallery 3’s 300 ppi figure and full-color design may make it attractive for comics, magazines and illustrated PDFs, but the published timings show why color quality and responsiveness are linked. A reader choosing a fast mode may accept less complete color rendering; the best-color mode can take up to 1,500 ms to update. It is not automatically “better” than Kaleido for every reading pattern.

Current Kaleido 3 readers: Kobo’s 2024 models

Rakuten Kobo announced the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour on April 10, 2024. Both use Kobo-optimized Kaleido 3 displays.

Model US launch price Notable feature Battery claim
Kobo Libra Colour $229.99 Supports the separately sold Kobo Stylus 2 ($69.99 in the US) for annotation Up to 40 days under Kobo’s stated brightness, wireless and daily-reading test conditions
Kobo Clara Colour $159.99 Compact color reader; stylus support is not identified in the launch information Up to 53 days under Kobo’s stated brightness, wireless and daily-reading test conditions

Those battery figures are manufacturer claims, not universal runtimes. Screen brightness, wireless use, note-taking, page-turn frequency and software activity can materially change endurance. Neither model is a Kaleido 4 device.

Should you buy now or wait?

Buy a current Kaleido 3 reader when

  • You want color covers, highlights and illustrations now and accept 150 ppi color detail.
  • You prefer a mature, announced product over an unconfirmed display generation.
  • You need Libra Colour’s stylus annotation support.

Wait for a Kaleido 4 announcement when

  • Muted color, gray backgrounds or refresh lag are your main reasons for upgrading.
  • You can delay purchase until E Ink or a device maker publishes resolution, refresh and availability details.
  • You want to compare a finished Kaleido 4 reader against real prices rather than a report.

For comics and PDFs, compare panel contrast, zoom performance, refresh modes and file handling on the complete device—not just the E Ink generation name. For novels, monochrome text sharpness, front-light comfort and page-turn consistency often matter more than the extra color palette.

What to check in a confirmed Kaleido 4 product

  • Separate black-and-white and color ppi figures.
  • Color depth and measured contrast, preferably under stated lighting conditions.
  • Refresh times for monochrome, fast color and best-quality color modes.
  • Whether the device uses a front light, warm-light controls and a textured or glossy cover layer.
  • Battery testing assumptions, including brightness, wireless status and daily reading time.
  • Annotation hardware, software support and accessory cost.

The Bottom Line

Kaleido 4 is currently a reported upgrade, not a fully specified product generation. Kaleido 3 remains the proven color-filter platform in current readers: sharp 300 ppi monochrome text alongside 150 ppi color. Buy a current model if those trade-offs fit your reading; wait if improved color, contrast and refresh are worth delaying for confirmed hardware.
