Dyson’s CameraJet is a real $499.99 electric toothbrush, but its headline feature has already hit a reliability problem. A process issue in one production batch of jet tubes created potential water seepage, affecting the precision mouthrinse function in a small number of early products and temporarily putting stock on hold. Dyson has not established, through independent peer-reviewed comparisons, that CameraJet produces better dental outcomes than a conventional electric toothbrush. That makes the first-generation device an expensive experiment rather than an evidence-backed upgrade for most buyers.

What the Dyson CameraJet actually does

A camera watches the spaces between teeth

CameraJet combines variable sonic oscillation with a 100,000-pixel macro camera. Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting system analyzes 28 live images per second and uses machine learning to identify gaps between teeth in real time. When the system decides a gap needs attention, it triggers a directed burst of mouthrinse.

The package and intended routine

Dyson says the package includes the CameraJet handle, a refill dock, two regular brush heads and a charging cable. The system is designed to be used with Dyson toothpaste and mouthrinse. The launch materials do not establish the price, replacement schedule or long-term availability of those consumables, so the $499.99 purchase price is not the complete cost of ownership.

It is not a floss replacement

The jet is a targeted rinse, not a strand of dental floss and not proof that plaque has been mechanically removed from every interdental surface. Dyson’s launch materials cite its own figure that nine in ten people do not floss as regularly as recommended, and say average brushing lasts 45 seconds; both are company-cited figures rather than independently verified population estimates. CameraJet’s goal is to make missed areas visible and direct rinse at them, but the available evidence does not show that this routine delivers the same result as consistent flossing or interdental cleaning recommended by a dental professional.

Why it costs $499.99

The US list price is $499.99. TechRadar reported launch pricing of £419.99 in the UK and AU$799 in Australia, so the “$500 toothbrush” description is literal for US customers but should not be converted directly into a universal global price.

Jake Dyson described the technology as “essentially a $70,000 piece of lab equipment in a handheld consumer product.” That helps explain the cost: the device packages high-resolution imaging, real-time image analysis, a sonic motor, a reservoir and a precision jet in one bathroom appliance. It does not demonstrate that the appliance is worth five times as much as an established electric toothbrush. Dyson also said of its launch standard, “It’s got to work properly”—a particularly important test when the product’s differentiating mechanism depends on a sealed water path.

What went wrong with the first production batch

Dyson told Marie Claire that “one production batch of jet tubes had experienced a process issue, creating the potential for water seepage which affected the performance of a small number of products early on.” The company said it isolated impacted products, which resulted in a temporary out-of-stock position, and apologized to customers.

The location of the problem matters. The jet tube sits beside the water reservoir, so seepage can do more than create cosmetic moisture: it can interrupt the precision-rinse burst that gives CameraJet its reason to exist. The report concerns a production-batch process issue, not proof that every unit leaks. However, it means buyers should treat early availability and first-generation durability as unresolved rather than assuming the launch hardware is mature.

How convincing is the evidence?

Dyson says CameraJet was scientifically tested in a laboratory with its proprietary proxy plaque. The proxy was developed through a funded research collaboration with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry. Dyson’s broader launch materials also refer to a clinical test.

Those statements are manufacturer-reported evidence. The information available for this launch does not establish an independent, peer-reviewed comparison showing that CameraJet improves real-world dental outcomes more than leading electric toothbrushes. A laboratory proxy can indicate how a design performs under controlled conditions, but it cannot by itself answer whether users maintain better oral hygiene, whether the camera correctly identifies clinically important areas, or whether the jet remains reliable over years of refills and cleaning.

Should you buy the Dyson CameraJet?

It may make sense if you value experimentation

  • You specifically want camera-based visual feedback and are willing to pay for a first-generation device.
  • You understand that the jet is targeted mouthrinse, not mechanical flossing.
  • You have confirmed that Dyson toothpaste, mouthrinse and replacement heads are available where you live and that their recurring prices fit your budget.
  • You accept that independent evidence of superior dental outcomes is not yet established.

Waiting is the rational choice for most people

  • You mainly want dependable plaque removal at the lowest long-term cost.
  • You are uncomfortable buying while a jet-tube seepage issue has recently affected availability.
  • You expect proof from independent clinical comparisons rather than manufacturer testing.
  • You do not want a toothbrush tied to a specific toothpaste or mouthrinse system.

What to do if your unit has a jet problem

If a new CameraJet shows seepage, fails to deliver its directed rinse or behaves differently from the setup instructions, stop relying on the jet function and contact Dyson through the support channel supplied with the product. Keep the purchase record and batch information available. The reported response was isolation of impacted products, so replacement or availability may depend on the affected production batch and current stock.

The verdict

CameraJet is an ambitious combination of sonic brushing, real-time imaging and an automatically aimed rinse burst. The engineering explains why Dyson can charge $499.99, but it does not yet justify the premium on evidence alone. A reported jet-tube process problem makes reliability uncertain at exactly the point where the product is most distinctive, while the published testing remains Dyson-reported rather than an independent demonstration of better dental health. Unless camera guidance is worth paying for as an early adopter, a proven electric toothbrush plus consistent interdental cleaning remains the lower-risk decision.
