Verdict in brief: The Dyson Purifier Cool PC1, also listed as the TP11 in some markets, combines a 360° Glass HEPA and activated-carbon filter with a fan that circulates air. It can make moving air feel cooler and can filter airborne particles and some gases, but it is not an air conditioner and should not be expected to lower room temperature. Dyson publishes strong airflow, oscillation and control specifications, yet no independent laboratory clean-air results or hands-on measurements were established for this review.
What the Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 is
The PC1 is a floor-standing purifier fan: one appliance performs two related jobs. Its filtration system draws room air through a 360° Glass HEPA filter and an activated-carbon layer, while the fan pushes treated air back into the room. The fan function helps distribute air and creates the breeze that people often perceive as cooling.
Dyson’s own product wording is deliberately clear: “Fan, not an air conditioning unit.” That distinction matters. Air conditioning removes heat from a room; a fan changes how quickly sweat evaporates from your skin and can therefore feel refreshing without reducing the room’s actual temperature. The PC1 can run its fan without purification, purification with relatively little airflow, or both functions together according to its controls, but it remains a fan-based appliance rather than a refrigeration system.

Published PC1 specifications
The following figures come from Dyson’s US technical specification. They are manufacturer specifications, not measurements made in an independent laboratory or during hands-on testing.
| Specification | Dyson-published information | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical rating | 120 V | Confirm that your local electrical supply and the regional model match; do not assume an imported unit is suitable for another voltage. |
| Filtration | 360° Glass HEPA plus activated carbon | HEPA addresses airborne particles; carbon is intended to adsorb some gases and odors. The specification does not quantify removal rates for particular pollutants. |
| Maximum airflow | 290 L/s | A fan-flow figure, not a clean-air delivery rate (CADR). It cannot by itself predict how quickly a room reaches a target particle concentration. |
| Oscillation | 350° | The outlet can sweep almost a full circle, helping distribute airflow around a room when the feature is enabled. |
| Fan speeds | 10 | More increments let you trade perceived breeze and noise, although the useful range depends on room position and listener preference. |
| Sound level | Up to 50 dB(A) at minimum flow; up to 61.4 dB(A) at maximum flow | These are stated operating figures. Placement, room acoustics and individual sensitivity determine whether the machine seems quiet or intrusive. |
| Filter-life assumption | One year at 12 hours of daily use, or six months at 24 hours of daily use | Dyson describes this as a usage-based estimate, not a guarantee. Dust load, smoke and other pollutants can change the replacement point. |
| Power input | 6 W minimum; 40 W maximum | Published limits rather than a measured household energy bill for a particular speed or mode. |
| Room coverage wording | “27m² to POLAR” | The retrieved specification does not explain the test method or conditions, so this should not be treated as a universal room-size guarantee. |
How its purification system works
Glass HEPA layer
The Glass HEPA element is the particle-filtering part of the system. In practical terms, it is intended to capture suspended material such as household dust, pollen and other fine particles that pass through the filter media. The product specification identifies the filter type but does not provide a particle-size capture percentage, a certified clean-air delivery rate, or an independent test showing performance in a particular room.
Activated-carbon layer
Activated carbon complements the particle filter by adsorbing some gases and odors. Carbon capacity is finite: once its adsorption sites are used, performance can decline even if the fan still operates normally. Dyson’s documents do not state a universal odor-removal rate or identify how long the carbon remains effective for a specific pollutant.
What the PC1 cannot establish from its specifications
Neither the 290 L/s airflow figure nor the presence of HEPA and carbon tells you the PC1’s CADR for smoke, dust or pollen. CADR requires a defined test method that combines filtration and delivered airflow. Because no independent CADR result was established here, avoid converting Dyson’s airflow number into a claim that the machine cleans a certain room in a certain number of minutes.
Does it cool a room?
No. The PC1 can make a person feel cooler by moving air across exposed skin, much like a conventional fan. It does not contain a compressor, refrigerant loop or heat-exchange system that would remove heat from the room. On a hot day, the room thermometer can remain unchanged even while the breeze feels more comfortable.

For comfort, aim the outlet toward occupants and use oscillation when several people need airflow. For purification, position the machine where its intake is not blocked by furniture, curtains or a wall. These goals can conflict: directing all airflow at one person maximizes perceived breeze, while broad oscillation distributes treated air more widely.
Airflow, oscillation and speed control
Ten fan-speed settings provide finer adjustment than a simple low/medium/high switch. Lower settings are generally easier to tolerate in a bedroom or workspace; higher settings create a stronger breeze and move more air but are also the settings most likely to be audible. Dyson rates maximum airflow at 290 L/s and oscillation at 350°, both under its own specified conditions.
The specification does not describe the outlet velocity at each speed, the distance at which a breeze remains noticeable, or a standardized room-air mixing result. Treat the controls as practical comfort and distribution options rather than proof of a particular whole-room cleaning time.
Noise: what the dB(A) figures mean in use
Dyson lists sound levels up to 50 dB(A) at minimum flow and 61.4 dB(A) at maximum flow. A-weighted decibels approximate human hearing sensitivity, but a single number cannot predict every listening experience. A hard floor, a nearby wall or a desk can reflect sound; a carpeted room can absorb some of it. A listener sitting close to the outlet may notice airflow noise that a meter several feet away would not capture.
If you are sensitive to noise, test the lowest speed that still provides the desired breeze and avoid placing the unit immediately beside a bed or microphone. Do not assume the maximum setting will be comfortable for sleep simply because the minimum-flow figure appears moderate. Conversely, a user who wants strong air movement may consider the top setting acceptable in a living room.

Auto mode, sensors and the MyDyson app
The manual says Auto mode uses onboard air-quality sensors to adjust machine settings in response to detected air quality. The technical sheet also describes live air-quality metrics in the MyDyson app. Those documents establish the intended features, not independent accuracy, response time or pollutant-identification reliability.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the readings as operational feedback rather than as a certified indoor-air monitor. A number that changes after cooking, cleaning or opening a window can help you understand when the machine is reacting, but the available documentation does not prove that the sensor detects every pollutant or that its concentration values match a calibrated instrument.
Before relying on app alerts, confirm that the machine is connected to the correct account and wireless network, that notifications are enabled on your phone and that the app recognizes the PC1/TP11 model sold in your region. Exact menus can change with app releases, so use the current in-app instructions rather than an older screenshot.
Filter replacement and ownership burden
Filter replacement is the PC1’s main recurring maintenance task. Dyson estimates one year of life when the machine runs 12 hours per day, or six months when it runs continuously for 24 hours per day. Those are usage-based estimates from Dyson, not a promise that every household will reach the same interval. Smoke, heavy dust, renovation debris and other concentrated pollution can shorten useful life.
Dyson support identifies the PC1 as compatible with its replacement-filter family. Before ordering, match the exact PC1 or TP11 designation, voltage region and filter part number shown for your machine. Do not rely on a similar-looking filter intended for another purifier. The retrieved information does not verify a current replacement price or stock position, so include an allowance for periodic purchases and check availability at the time you buy.

Practical maintenance routine
- Keep the intake and outlet clear of curtains, furniture and accumulated dust.
- Use the machine’s filter-life indicator or app notification as a prompt to inspect the filter, while remembering that the estimate depends on operating hours and pollutant load.
- Switch the unit off and unplug it before opening any filter compartment or carrying out maintenance.
- Install only the filter specified for your exact model and seat it fully so air cannot bypass the media.
- Reset the filter-life reminder using the procedure in the current manual or app after installation.
Do not wash a disposable HEPA/carbon cartridge unless Dyson’s instructions for your exact part explicitly permit it. Water can damage filter media and leave the carbon ineffective.
Room placement and the ambiguous coverage claim
The technical sheet says “27m² to POLAR” for room coverage but does not define the test protocol, air-change target or room conditions behind that wording. It is therefore not comparable to a clearly documented CADR-based room-size recommendation. A larger or open-plan space, high ceilings, closed doors and strong pollutant sources can all change the result.
For a fair real-world setup, place the PC1 with clearance around the intake, avoid trapping it in a corner and leave doors and windows in the state you normally use. If you are trying to clean a bedroom, close the door and run the machine in that room rather than extrapolating a coverage label across an entire floor. If you mainly want a personal breeze, place it nearer the seating position and use a lower oscillation range only if the controls allow that adjustment.
Setup and first-use checklist
- Verify that the label says PC1 or the market-specific TP11 equivalent and that the appliance voltage matches your supply.
- Unpack the machine and remove all transport packaging from the filter and air path.
- Position it on a stable, level surface with unobstructed intake and outlet areas.
- Connect power, then select a low fan speed to confirm normal operation before increasing airflow.
- Choose oscillation when you want broader circulation, or keep the outlet aimed at one area for personal comfort.
- Select Auto mode if you want the onboard sensors to adjust settings in response to the air-quality signal.
- Pair the machine with the MyDyson app if you want live metrics and remote controls supported in your region.
- Record the filter-installation date so the usage-based replacement estimate is easy to track.
What is independently known—and what is not
This review should not be read as a laboratory performance test. No independent clean-air test, hands-on noise measurement, room-size experiment or verified sensor-accuracy study was established for the PC1 in the available evidence. The airflow, oscillation, sound, power and filter-life figures above are Dyson’s published specifications. The Auto-mode and app descriptions come from Dyson documentation. A 2026 T3 review supplies naming and publication-time pricing context, not current market verification.

Price and availability context
T3 listed the PC1 at £449.99 in the UK and $549.99 in the US at the time of its review. Those were review-time prices, not a current quote, and they can change with region, tax, promotion and stock. No current retail listing, inventory status or replacement-filter price was verified here. Check the exact regional product page and seller before committing, and confirm that the listing identifies the same PC1/TP11 variant you intend to maintain.
How to compare the PC1 with another purifier fan
If you are deciding between the PC1 and another fan-equipped purifier, compare the following items side by side rather than relying on a HEPA label or a maximum-airflow headline:
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Independent cleaning performance | Is there a comparable CADR test for smoke, dust or pollen? | CADR combines cleaning and airflow under a defined method; raw fan flow does not. |
| Air distribution | How far does the airflow reach, and does the unit oscillate or mix air effectively? | A purifier that cleans only near its intake may behave differently from one that circulates air across the room. |
| Noise at usable speeds | What are the measured levels at the speeds you would actually run? | Maximum-speed noise is less useful if you plan to sleep at a lower setting, and vice versa. |
| Filter ownership | What is the exact replacement interval, price and regional availability? | Recurring filter cost can outweigh a modest purchase-price difference. |
| Sensors and software | Which pollutants are sensed, how are readings displayed and is accuracy independently documented? | App graphs are useful for trends but are not automatically equivalent to calibrated monitoring. |
| Cooling expectation | Do you need a breeze, actual room-temperature reduction, or both? | A purifier fan can provide perceived cooling; only air conditioning removes heat. |
For a comparison involving another Dyson model, verify the model number and regional specification first. Names, included features and filter compatibility can differ between markets even when the product family looks similar.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Combines particle filtration, activated-carbon treatment and fan circulation in one appliance.
- Offers ten speed settings and near-full-circle 350° oscillation according to Dyson’s specification.
- Supports Auto mode based on onboard air-quality sensors and live metrics through the MyDyson app.
- Provides a clear manufacturer warning that it is a fan, not an air conditioner.
- Uses a replaceable filter rather than requiring disposal of the whole machine when the media is exhausted.
Limitations and uncertainties
- No independent CADR, room-cleaning-time, noise or sensor-accuracy result is established here.
- The “27m² to POLAR” coverage wording lacks the conditions needed to interpret it as a room-size guarantee.
- Maximum-flow sound is likely to be more noticeable than minimum-flow operation, especially at close range.
- Filter life depends on hours and pollution load, creating an ongoing replacement obligation.
- Current purchase and filter prices, stock and regional availability require checking at the time of purchase.
Who should buy the PC1?
The PC1 makes the most sense for someone who wants one appliance to circulate air and provide filtered airflow, values app-connected controls and accepts recurring filter purchases. It is particularly suitable when a personal or room-level breeze is useful alongside a general particle-and-odor filtration function.
It is a poor fit if your primary requirement is lowering room temperature, if you need a documented CADR for a specific room-size calculation, or if you cannot accommodate the noise and filter-maintenance trade-offs of a fan purifier. In those cases, choose equipment designed and tested for the missing requirement rather than expecting the PC1’s airflow specification to substitute for it.
Final verdict
The Dyson Purifier Cool PC1 (TP11) is best understood as a premium purifier fan, not a compact air conditioner. Dyson’s specification gives it a 360° Glass HEPA/activated-carbon filter, 290 L/s maximum airflow, 350° oscillation and ten speeds, with stated sound levels rising from 50 dB(A) at minimum flow to 61.4 dB(A) at maximum flow. Auto mode and the MyDyson app add convenience, but the available documentation does not independently validate their sensing accuracy or the machine’s clean-air rate.
Buy it when the combination of filtered air, adjustable circulation and connected controls matches your priorities, and budget for replacement filters using the usage assumptions Dyson publishes. Do not buy it expecting refrigeration-style cooling or a guaranteed room-cleaning time that the available specifications do not establish.
