The PencilWash is the better fit if you want a slim, lighter wet cleaner for smaller hard-floor sessions; the WashG1 is the stronger on-paper choice for larger areas, with longer stated runtime, greater stated coverage and a dual-roller system. Dyson’s published specifications do not establish which cleans better in a direct, independent comparison. The choice comes down to your floor area, the machine’s weight and design, and whether its care routine suits you.
Dyson PencilWash vs. WashG1 at a glance
Both machines are wet cleaners for hard floors, not all-purpose vacuum cleaners. The figures below come from Dyson’s US product materials and are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test. The prices are what Dyson’s US pages displayed on October 12, 2026; prices and availability can change.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the PencilWash if easy handling matters most
At 4.9 lb for the full machine, the PencilWash is the lighter option by a wide margin. That can matter if you regularly carry a cleaner between floors, have limited storage space, or prefer a machine that is easier to lift and steer. Dyson describes the unit as 1.5 inches in diameter and says it lays flat to reach under low furniture. Its lower displayed US price may also make it the more accessible choice, though that price is a dated listing rather than a guarantee of what you will pay.
#1 Best Overall
- EASY TO MANEUVER - The ultra-slim, lightweight handle is just 1.5 inches in diameter and 0.8 lbs in hand for ergonomic steering.
- WASH AWAY SPILLS, STAINS AND DEBRIS - The 64,000-filament microfiber roller powerfully washes away wet spills and stains, while removing debris and dirt on hard floors. Switch to MAX mode for spot cleaning and dried on stains. Unlike your mop, dirty water and debris is scraped away with each rotation so you don't use dirty water to clean.
- CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - Dirty water and debris are extracted from the roller on every rotation, while 8 hydration points ensure the floor is always washed with clean water.
- GOOD FOR SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED ROOMS Covers up to 1076 sqft.² A 300ml clean water tank stored in the cleaner head for optimum balance and less weight in hand.
- SELF-PROPELLED - A powerful motor rotates the roller to deliver self-propelled motion – gliding through wet and dry mess with ease.
The trade-off is scale: Dyson states up to 30 minutes of runtime and 1,076 sq ft of coverage. Those figures make it a more natural fit for a smaller cleaning area or shorter sessions than for someone choosing primarily for maximum advertised coverage.
Choose the WashG1 if area and its two-roller setup matter more
The WashG1 is heavier at 10.8 lb, but Dyson lists up to 35 minutes of runtime and 3,000 sq ft of coverage. Its two motorized, counter-rotating microfiber rollers and a separate debris tray distinguish its cleaning system from the PencilWash’s slim roller design. It also offers three hydration levels and a MAX setting. These features may appeal if you want adjustable water delivery and a machine specified for larger hard-floor areas; they do not, by themselves, establish superior stain removal.
The higher displayed price and greater weight are material trade-offs. If you do not need the WashG1’s larger stated coverage or want to minimize lifting, its specifications may be less compelling for your situation.

Choose neither as your only floor-care machine if you need vacuuming
Dyson describes both as wet hard-floor cleaners. The PencilWash is listed for tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood. Dyson says the WashG1 is engineered for hard floors and does not work on carpets; it also says a separate vacuum is needed for carpets, upholstery, mattresses, pet beds, countertops and cars. Do not buy either on the assumption that it replaces a general-purpose vacuum.
How the cleaning systems differ
PencilWash: a slim roller-based wet cleaner
Dyson describes the PencilWash as applying fresh water with a roller system while keeping lifted dirt and debris contained at the base. The company says only clean water touches the floor. Its narrow 1.5-inch diameter and ability to lie flat are design points aimed at access and compactness, rather than an indication that it covers more ground per session.
Dyson lists the clean-water tank at 10 fl oz and the dirty-water tank at 12 fl oz. The machine’s advertised runtime is up to 30 minutes. For coverage, Dyson gives 1,076 sq ft, but qualifies that figure as a simulation in low-hydration mode from a single clean-water tank. It is not a promise that every home or floor type will be covered in one tank.

WashG1: counter-rotating rollers and a debris tray
The WashG1 uses two motorized counter-rotating microfiber rollers. Dyson says the machine separates solid debris from dirty water in an onboard tray, and lists three hydration levels plus a MAX setting. The clean-water tank is listed at 0.26 gal and the dirty-water tank at 0.21 gal. Dyson states up to 35 minutes of runtime.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDyson lists 3,000 sq ft of coverage, based on its internal calculation without repeated cleaning at a specified walking speed. The company notes that actual area varies with floor type and cleaning habits. The coverage figure is therefore best treated as a manufacturer estimate for comparison, not a guaranteed result in your home.
How to interpret the runtime and coverage figures
The numbers make the WashG1 look better suited to larger spaces, but they are not a controlled comparison of how much floor each device cleans under identical conditions. The PencilWash coverage number is simulated under low hydration from a single tank. The WashG1 number uses Dyson’s calculation, with no repeated cleaning and a specified walking speed. Because the qualifications differ, the figures should not be treated as directly comparable test results.
Likewise, “up to” runtime is a maximum stated by the manufacturer, not an assurance of a particular session length. Settings, floor conditions and cleaning habits can affect actual use. If your space is near either published coverage figure, allow for variation rather than assuming the stated area will be covered without a refill or another pass.
Dyson’s product materials do not provide an independent, direct comparison of stain removal or drying speed between the two machines. A statement about one device cleaning stains better or leaving floors drier would go beyond the evidence in the published specifications.
What the differences mean in everyday ownership
The full-machine weight figures differ by 5.9 lb: Dyson lists the PencilWash at 4.9 lb and the WashG1 at 10.8 lb. That is a substantial specification gap, but the full-machine figure is not the same thing as the force or weight you feel while steering. Dyson separately describes the PencilWash as weighing 0.8 lb in hand in its launch announcement and 0.84 lb on its product page. Those two PencilWash in-hand figures differ slightly, so the full-machine figures are the clearest basis for comparing the models here.

- Engineered to wash hard floors. Properly.¹
Think about where and how you will use the cleaner, not just the advertised weight. Carrying a device up stairs, lifting it into storage and steering it across a room are distinct tasks. The PencilWash’s slim profile and ability to lie flat are relevant if getting under low furniture or storing a narrow machine matters to you. The WashG1’s greater listed coverage and larger tank capacities are relevant if a larger hard-floor area is your priority. The published specifications do not quantify how either machine feels during a particular cleaning routine.
Tank size is also only one part of the practical comparison. The WashG1 has larger listed clean- and dirty-water capacities, but those figures do not promise a specific number of rooms per fill. The PencilWash coverage estimate is tied to a single clean-water tank and low-hydration simulation; WashG1 coverage uses a different calculation and assumptions. Floor layout, surface and how often you repeat a pass all affect what you can clean before stopping.
At the prices displayed on October 12, 2026, the WashG1 was $420 more than the PencilWash. That arithmetic describes the observed listings only; it does not show that one is a better value for every buyer. Consider whether the extra coverage on the WashG1’s specification sheet, its dual-roller design and its controls matter enough in your home to justify a higher purchase price. If your priority is a lighter machine and a lower observed price, the PencilWash has the simpler case.

The WashG1’s three hydration levels and MAX setting offer selectable water delivery, according to Dyson. That gives the owner options, but the available product materials do not establish a particular stain-removal result for each setting or a direct advantage over the PencilWash. Dyson’s Vice President of Engineering, Charlie Park, said in the company’s May 13, 2024 WashG1 announcement: “Stain removal performance is dependent on the correlation of hydration of the floor and agitation applied. We’ve engineered our machine to allow owners full control, enabling them to deep clean their homes effectively.” This is Dyson’s explanation of the WashG1 design, not an independent comparative finding.
Similarly, Dyson’s statement that only clean water touches the floor with the PencilWash describes the manufacturer’s design claim. It is useful to understand how Dyson presents the system, but it should not be turned into a claim that the PencilWash cleans more effectively, leaves a floor drier or needs less care than the WashG1. No direct independent comparison is established by the specifications cited here.
Care, consumables and long-term ownership
WashG1 cleaning routine and roller life
Dyson recommends running the WashG1’s self-clean function after use and manually cleaning the machine after every three uses, according to its US product FAQ. Its owner support page says the rollers last around 25 hours, depending on use. Treat that as an approximate manufacturer estimate, not a fixed replacement interval: how often you clean and the conditions in which you use the machine matter.

Dyson’s WashG1 owner’s page provides care guidance, while the WashG1 parts catalog lists compatible replacement rollers, brush bars, tanks, the debris tray, battery and dock. Parts prices and stock can change, so check current availability and verify compatibility before ordering.
What to check before buying
- Confirm that the model is intended for your flooring, particularly if you have sealed wood or mixed floor surfaces.
- Check whether the cleaner’s weight is manageable for carrying, storage and regular use.
- Consider the tank capacities and stated runtime in relation to your routine, while allowing for the manufacturer’s coverage qualifications.
- For the WashG1, decide whether its self-clean cycle and periodic manual cleaning fit the care you are willing to do.
- Check the current price, stock and any included accessories directly with the seller. On October 12, 2026, Dyson’s US pages displayed out-of-stock notification messaging for both products in search results, while a WashG1 variant page also appeared in stock. Those signals conflict, so availability was not clear from the observed listings.
For WashG1 owners, the care commitments are specific enough to include in a buying decision: Dyson advises using the self-clean function after use and manually cleaning after every three uses. The stated roller life of around 25 hours is also worth factoring into expectations, though it is not a warranty of a fixed lifespan. The official parts catalog names replacement rollers and other components, but parts prices and availability can move over time.
The published care information provided here is specific to the WashG1. Do not assume that its cycle, manual-cleaning schedule or roller-life estimate also describes PencilWash maintenance. Check the relevant model’s own instructions for care and compatible parts rather than transferring one machine’s guidance to the other.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and availability are a snapshot, not a guarantee
On October 12, 2026, Dyson’s US product pages displayed $349.99 for the PencilWash and $769.99 for the WashG1. The PencilWash was therefore listed $420 lower at that moment. This is a comparison of displayed prices, not a claim about typical pricing, future promotions or what every retailer charges. Check the live listing before making a purchase.
Stock signals also conflicted: both products had out-of-stock notification messaging in search results, but a WashG1 variant page appeared in stock. Since availability may vary by page, configuration and time, confirm that the exact model you want can be ordered before relying on a listing.
If buying from a retailer rather than Dyson, verify the exact model and what is included, and check current stock and price directly. The displayed amounts above are not a price history, a guaranteed selling price or a claim about discounts elsewhere. Likewise, the presence of a parts listing does not guarantee that every component is in stock at the time you need it.

- CLEANS WET & DRY MESSES HYGIENICALLY - Washes spills and stains on hard floor. Waste stays in the cleaner head, not the machine, so no contamination or bad smells. Unlike your mop, cleans both dry debris and wet dirt with only clean water.
- LIFTS DUST AND DEBRIS LIKE A VACUUM² - Our powerful motor drives a roller with densely packed filaments that grab and lift dry debris and hair from hard floors, even when wet. The Anti-tangle comb behind the roller helps avoid hair tangling.
- POWERFUL WET CLEAN WITH A FAST DRY AND STREAK-FREE FINISH - Our most absorbent microfiber roller prevents water stains and streaking with 84,000 densely-packed filaments. Leaves less than 1g/m² of water, so floors dry within 60 seconds.
- UP TO 70 MINUTES RUN TIME¹ - Dyson's longest run time allows for up to 3,770 sqft of coverage.⁴
- CONTINUOUS HYGIENIC CLEANING - A new hygienic waste system means no dirt is drawn upwards through the machine. Unlike a mop, dirty water and debris are scraped from the roller before it’s hydrated with clean water, so it always washes with clean water.
Verdict
For a lighter, slimmer machine and a smaller stated coverage area, the PencilWash is the more practical fit on Dyson’s specifications. For a larger hard-floor area, longer stated runtime and a dual-roller system with selectable hydration, the WashG1 is the stronger on-paper option—if its added weight and higher observed price make sense for you. Neither set of manufacturer claims establishes a head-to-head winner for cleaning performance, and neither should be treated as a carpet or upholstery vacuum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better, Dyson PencilWash or WashG1?
It depends on what matters most. The PencilWash is lighter, slimmer and had the lower displayed US price on October 12, 2026. Dyson lists the WashG1 with longer maximum runtime, greater coverage, larger tanks and two counter-rotating microfiber rollers. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent proof that one removes stains better.
Is the WashG1 worth the higher price?
Dyson’s US pages displayed $769.99 for the WashG1 and $349.99 for the PencilWash on October 12, 2026, a $420 difference at those listed prices. The WashG1 may make more sense if its stated coverage, runtime and dual-roller setup suit your needs. Prices and stock change, so check current listings before deciding.
Can the PencilWash or WashG1 clean carpets?
Neither should be treated as a carpet vacuum. Dyson lists the PencilWash for tiles, vinyl, laminate and sealed wood, and says the WashG1 is engineered for hard floors and does not work on carpets. Dyson says a separate vacuum is needed for carpets and other tasks such as upholstery, mattresses, pet beds, countertops and cars.
How much floor can each machine clean on one charge or tank?
Dyson states up to 30 minutes and 1,076 sq ft for PencilWash, and up to 35 minutes and 3,000 sq ft for WashG1. These are not directly comparable independent test results: PencilWash coverage is simulated in low-hydration mode from one clean-water tank, while WashG1 coverage is an internal calculation based on no repeated cleaning at a specified walking speed. Actual use varies.
How often does the WashG1 need cleaning, and how long do its rollers last?
Dyson recommends using the WashG1 self-clean function after use and manually cleaning it after every three uses. Dyson’s owner page estimates roller life at around 25 hours depending on use. Treat that as approximate guidance, and check the owner instructions and parts catalog for current compatible replacement parts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does the WashG1 clean stains better or leave floors drier than the PencilWash?
The cited Dyson product materials do not provide an independent head-to-head result for stain removal or drying speed. The WashG1 has adjustable hydration and a MAX setting, but that feature description alone cannot establish that it outperforms the PencilWash.
The Bottom Line
Choose PencilWash for lower full-machine weight, a slim profile and a smaller stated coverage area; choose WashG1 if its larger coverage estimate, longer stated runtime and dual-roller design better match your hard floors. Dyson’s figures are qualified manufacturer specifications, not a direct performance test. Check current price, stock and model-specific care guidance before buying.
