The Dyson Gen5outsize Absolute makes the most sense in a home where a large dust bin and a wider floor head save meaningful time. Its 0.5-gallon bin and wider main cleaner head suit bigger floor-cleaning sessions, but the 8.6-pound vacuum is less maneuverable than the standard Gen5detect. The advertised 140-minute maximum also depends on using two batteries; it is not a single-charge runtime.
What is included with the Gen5outsize Absolute?
Dyson’s current US product page lists the Gen5outsize Absolute with a Fluffy Optic cleaner head, Hair screw tool, built-in dusting and crevice tool, combination tool, additional battery, Wall dok and charger. The page describes two cleaner heads and five accessories. However, configurations can differ: RTINGS documents an Absolute setup with a Digital Motorbar XL head and an additional battery, while other Gen5outsize listings may have a regular Digital Motorbar head and no extra battery. Check the exact regional retailer listing before treating any accessory or head as included. Dyson’s US product page and RTINGS’ review describe their respective configurations.
What do you get for the larger size?
Dyson lists a 0.5-gallon bin, 8.6-pound weight and 4.5-hour charge time for the Gen5outsize. TechRadar reports the bin holds 1.9 liters, compared with 0.8 liters in the Gen5detect, and describes it as 150% larger. The additional capacity can mean fewer pauses to empty the bin during a bigger clean.

That can cover more floor per pass, but it does not make the vacuum easier to steer around furniture. The Fluffy Optic head remains the same size as the corresponding Gen5detect head. How long does the battery last?
Dyson advertises up to 140 minutes of runtime, but that maximum uses two battery packs consecutively. TechRadar reports up to 70 minutes per battery in Eco mode. Actual runtime depends on the selected mode and cleaning conditions, and the 140-minute figure should not be read as a promise for one charge. The US Absolute bundle shown by Dyson includes an additional battery; verify that the specific listing you are considering does too.
How well does it clean?
RTINGS’ review, updated March 19, 2026, reports scores of 8.0 for debris pickup, 7.0 for high-pile carpet pickup, 7.0 for low-pile carpet pickup and 9.5 for pet-hair pickup. These are RTINGS’ test-bench ratings, not percentages or results from this review. RTINGS also reports that the Hair Screw Tool performs well on upholstered furniture in Auto mode. The large dirt compartment can make it awkward to reach into narrow gaps, such as beside sofa arms, illustrating the handling compromise in handheld cleaning.

Is it cumbersome to use?
Size is the central tradeoff. At 8.6 pounds, the Gen5outsize is about 14 ounces (400 grams) heavier than the Gen5detect, according to TechRadar’s comparison. RTINGS finds the Outsize less maneuverable, and TechRadar also points to its bulk as a drawback for frequent handheld use. It has an on/off button rather than a squeeze trigger, and its crevice tool is built into the wand, according to RTINGS.

The wider head and large bin are most useful when cleaning broad, open floor areas. The weight and bulk matter more on stairs, furniture, overhead surfaces and around tight spaces, where lifting and repositioning the vacuum are frequent.

RTINGS says the two perform very similarly overall, but favors the Gen5detect for most people who do not need the larger bin. Choose the Outsize when capacity and wider floor coverage matter more than easy handling; lean toward the standard model for a regular-sized home or frequent above-floor cleaning.

Price and availability in the US
When Dyson’s US product page was accessed on October 7, 2026, it displayed a price of $1,149.99 and marked the product “Currently out of stock.” Those are a dated US snapshot, not a reliable current price or availability guarantee. Check the live listing for your region and confirm the bundle contents before buying. Dyson’s product page also contains conflicting suction representations in the source material, so this review does not give a definitive Air Watts figure.

Who should buy the Gen5outsize Absolute?
- Consider it if you have a larger floor area, clean frequently, have pets, or value emptying the bin less often. RTINGS’ strong pet-hair score and its comments on the Hair Screw Tool are particularly relevant to homes with upholstered furniture.
- Consider a smaller, more maneuverable option if you live in a smaller home, often carry a vacuum up stairs, or regularly clean furniture and overhead areas.
- Verify the listing if the additional battery or a particular cleaner head is central to your decision; names and bundle contents vary across configurations and regions.
