Short answer: a console can send a 4K signal while rendering a game internally below 4K, changing that internal resolution from frame to frame, and reconstructing the result with an upscaler. Ray tracing adds more physically convincing reflections, shadows and refraction, but it uses GPU time that could otherwise support higher resolution or steadier frame rates. “4K,” “120 FPS” and “ray tracing” are therefore separate capabilities, not a guarantee that a game delivers all three at once.
The right graphics mode depends on the game, its patch, your display and whether you value responsiveness, image detail or advanced lighting most.
Internal resolution is not the same as output resolution
A console game has an internal rendering resolution: the number of pixels its GPU calculates for geometry, shading, effects and lighting. It also has an output resolution: the signal sent over HDMI to the television or monitor. Those values can differ.

When a game is described as outputting 4K, the console is sending a 3840-by-2160 signal. That label does not prove that every frame was calculated natively at 3840 by 2160. The game may have rendered fewer pixels, then enlarged or reconstructed the image to fit the 4K output. This distinction is important because the internal workload determines much of the frame-rate and image-quality trade-off.

Native rendering calculates every output pixel directly. Reconstructed rendering uses information from the current frame, previous frames, motion data and an upscaling algorithm to estimate detail that was not calculated at the final pixel count. A well-designed reconstruction can look sharp and stable, but it is still different from native rendering and can show artifacts in difficult motion or fine geometry.
What dynamic resolution scaling does
Dynamic resolution scaling (DRS) changes a game’s internal pixel count while play continues. Developers set a performance target, such as a chosen frame-rate range, and allow the renderer to lower internal resolution when a scene becomes unusually expensive. When the workload falls, the renderer can raise it again.
Microsoft describes DRS as a way to preserve high image quality without giving up the frame-rate target. In practice, the system is a budget-control mechanism: it spends fewer GPU resources on pixels during explosions, large crowds, dense foliage, heavy post-processing or other demanding views, rather than allowing frame times to rise sharply.

Why the image can soften temporarily
A lower internal resolution means fewer source pixels are available to the upscaler. The final output can look softer, show more shimmering on thin geometry or reveal reconstruction artifacts during the most demanding moments. The change may be subtle, brief and difficult to notice from a normal viewing distance, or it may be obvious in a title with an aggressive range.
DRS is not the same as a console changing the television’s resolution. The television may continue receiving a constant 4K signal while the game changes its internal workload underneath that signal.

What DRS protects
The primary goal is frame-time consistency. A game targeting a high-refresh mode can trade some spatial detail for steadier motion and controls. Whether that trade is worthwhile depends on the title: a fast competitive game may benefit greatly from consistency, while a slow exploration game may make a temporary resolution drop more visible than a small frame-rate variation.
How upscaling and reconstruction restore detail
Upscaling converts a lower-resolution rendered image into the display resolution. Simple enlargement interpolates neighboring pixels. Modern console techniques can do more: temporal methods compare multiple frames, use motion information and preserve edges; neural methods use a trained model to infer likely detail and reduce instability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSony’s October 1, 2026 description of PSSR says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses artificial intelligence to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. Sony describes QSSR as a streamlined neural-network implementation for PS5. These names identify reconstruction technologies, not a promise that every game will use the same algorithm or produce identical results.
Where reconstruction works best
- Stable surfaces, large objects and predictable motion provide useful information across frames.
- Temporal data can improve apparent detail without calculating every final-resolution pixel.
- Neural reconstruction can preserve edges and fine structure better than basic enlargement when a game’s implementation is well tuned.
Where artifacts appear
- Rapid camera movement can leave insufficient matching information between frames.
- Thin wires, foliage, hair, particles and transparencies are difficult to reconstruct cleanly.
- Objects entering or leaving the image can produce ghosting, shimmer or an unstable outline.
- Different games can look noticeably different even when they advertise the same upscaling technology, because motion vectors, sharpening, reconstruction quality and internal-resolution ranges differ.
Upscaling therefore improves the practical result of a lower internal resolution; it does not turn that render into indistinguishable native 4K in every scene.
What ray tracing changes
Ray tracing simulates how light travels and interacts with surfaces instead of relying only on traditional rasterized approximations. In console games it can improve reflections, shadows, refraction through materials such as glass, and indirect-light cues. Sony lists water, glass, refraction and shadows among PS5 ray-tracing uses.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X include hardware acceleration for ray tracing. The hardware makes these calculations practical, but it does not make them free. Rays, intersection tests, denoising and associated effects consume GPU time that could otherwise be used for more internal pixels, higher-quality raster effects or a steadier frame rate.

Enabling ray-traced reflections or shadows adds work to each frame. A developer may respond by lowering internal resolution, reducing other effects, selecting a lower frame-rate target or combining all three. That is why a ray-tracing mode can look more realistic in reflections while appearing softer or less responsive than a performance mode.
Ray tracing is not a universal quality ranking. A game with excellent rasterized lighting may look more coherent in its non-ray-traced mode than in an aggressive ray-traced mode. The meaningful comparison is how each title allocates its fixed GPU budget.
How common graphics modes differ
The labels below describe common design patterns, not guarantees. Developers choose the available modes, targets and compromises for each game and patch.
| Mode | Frame-rate behavior | Internal resolution | Lighting and reflections | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance | Usually prioritized for responsiveness and consistency | More aggressive dynamic scaling is likely | Fewer or lower-quality ray-traced effects | Competitive play and players sensitive to input delay |
| Quality or fidelity | Often lower, or less stable than performance mode | Higher target resolution is likely | May use selective ray tracing or higher raster quality | Detail-focused play on a large or close-viewed display |
| Ray-tracing | Often lower than a comparable non-RT mode | May be reduced to fund RT calculations | Ray-traced reflections, shadows or lighting are emphasized | Players who value lighting behavior over maximum responsiveness |
A mode called “quality” is not necessarily native 4K, and a mode called “performance” is not necessarily a locked frame rate. Check the game’s own description and observe difficult scenes rather than relying on the label alone.

What PS5 and Xbox Series X specifications actually promise
Sony’s PS5 FAQ lists an AMD RDNA 2-based graphics engine with hardware ray-tracing acceleration and a maximum of 10.3 teraflops. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X materials describe hardware-accelerated DirectX ray tracing and frame-rate targets up to 120 frames per second.
These are platform capabilities, not per-game guarantees. A game’s engine, scene complexity, patch, selected mode and reconstruction method determine its actual internal resolution and frame-time behavior. Neither specification guarantees native 4K, 120 FPS and ray tracing simultaneously.
Do you need HDMI 2.1 for 4K at 120 Hz?
For a PS5 4K/120Hz or VRR setup, Sony documents HDMI 2.1 support and recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The complete display chain must support the feature: console, cable, television or monitor and any receiver or switch between them.
Check the whole signal path
- Confirm the display input. Use the television or monitor’s specifications and input information to verify that the specific HDMI port supports 4K at 120 Hz and, if required, VRR. Some displays have only one full-bandwidth port.
- Check the receiver or switch. If the console passes through an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch, that device must also support the same 4K/120Hz and VRR features. Temporarily connect the console directly to the display to isolate a pass-through limitation.
- Use the appropriate cable. Sony recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for PS5 4K/120Hz operation. The cable enables the signal; it does not increase the console’s rendering performance.
- Enable the display’s high-bandwidth input mode. Manufacturers use different names for this setting. Consult the display’s manual for the HDMI mode that permits 4K at 120 Hz, HDR or VRR on that port.
- Review the console’s video output information. Use the system video settings to see the detected resolution, refresh-rate options and VRR compatibility. If 120 Hz or VRR is unavailable, test each link in the chain and replace only the component that fails the requirement.
HDMI 2.1 is relevant to carrying a 4K/120Hz signal and VRR; it does not force a game to render at 4K or 120 FPS. A title can remain internally resolution-limited even when the connection is fully compatible.
Choosing a mode for your own games
Choose performance when responsiveness is the priority
Select performance mode for aiming, racing, fighting, platforming or any game where consistent motion and low control latency matter more than the finest distant detail. Dynamic scaling may be more visible, but stable frame pacing can make play feel substantially better.

Choose quality when detail matters more
Quality or fidelity mode is appropriate for slower exploration, cinematic scenes and players who sit close to a large screen. Examine foliage, distant geometry and image stability in motion; a higher target resolution is useful only if the mode remains comfortable to play.
Choose ray tracing selectively
Use a ray-tracing mode when reflections, shadows or refraction are central to the visual appeal and the resulting frame rate suits you. Compare the same location in both modes, including moving water, glass, glossy floors and shadowed interiors. Some scenes show a clear lighting benefit; others show little difference outside reflective surfaces.
Common misunderstandings and troubleshooting
“The menu says 4K, so the game is native 4K.”
The menu usually reports the output signal. It does not establish the internal resolution used for every frame. DRS and reconstruction can operate beneath a constant 4K output.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“An upscaler always makes a lower-resolution image look native.”
Reconstruction quality varies with motion, geometry and implementation. Inspect thin objects and fast camera pans, where artifacts are most likely.
“Ray tracing is automatically the best graphics setting.”
Ray tracing changes lighting behavior while consuming GPU time. A non-RT mode can deliver higher internal resolution or steadier motion and may be preferable for your display and play style.
“A new HDMI cable will add frames per second.”
A compliant cable can remove a bandwidth bottleneck and allow 4K/120Hz or VRR to pass through. It cannot increase the console’s GPU workload or change a game’s frame-rate target.
“My setup supports 120 Hz, but the game still runs at 60.”
Display capability is only one condition. The game must offer a 120-FPS mode, and that mode may be limited to selected scenes, resolutions or patches. Check the game’s graphics menu and update notes before treating the display as faulty.
A practical way to compare two modes
- Stand or sit at your normal viewing distance and note the display’s refresh-rate and VRR status.
- Visit a repeatable scene containing distant detail, reflective surfaces and movement.
- Switch modes without changing other display settings.
- Compare camera pans for judder, shimmer, ghosting and frame-time drops, not just a paused screenshot.
- Keep the mode that best matches your tolerance for softness, input delay and lighting changes; there is no platform-wide winner.
Dynamic resolution, reconstruction and ray tracing are parts of one budget decision. The console cannot maximize every variable in every scene, so the visible result is always a balance among internal pixels, reconstructed detail, lighting complexity and frame-time consistency.
