A dynamic microphone turns sound into an electrical signal using a moving diaphragm and coil inside a magnetic field. The design is often a practical choice for live vocals and loud sources, but no microphone type is automatically right for every recording: the model’s intended use, pickup pattern, response, output and placement all matter.
How a dynamic microphone works
In a moving-coil dynamic microphone, sound pressure moves a diaphragm. A voice coil attached to that diaphragm moves within a magnetic field, generating an electrical signal that follows the sound. Shure describes the assembly as a “miniature sound-driven electrical generator” in its microphone recording techniques guide.
This direct mechanical principle helps explain why dynamic microphones are commonly used in demanding settings. Shure describes the category as rugged and capable of handling high sound pressure levels, while noting that dynamic microphones can have limitations at very high and very low frequencies. These are broad design tendencies, not guarantees for every model or source; check the specific microphone’s documentation and listen in the intended setup.
What to compare when choosing one
Choose for the source and environment rather than relying on the word “dynamic” alone. Compare the following specifications in each manufacturer’s current product information or user guide.
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. (Tips: Keep the top of end-addressing XLR dynamic microphone AM8 facing audio source, and suggested recording range is 2 to 6 in.)
- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)
- [USB Connection with Handy Mute] Skip the hassle of setting something up and plug the cable to play the dynamic USB microphone directly, which suits for beginner creators or daily podcast. You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)
- [Soothing Controllable RGB] RGB ring on the desktop gaming microphone for PC, with 3 modes and more than 10 light colors collection, matches your PC gears accessories for gaming synergy even in dim room. You can control the RGB key button of the dynamic microphone USB directly for game color scheme gaming or live streaming. Configured memory function, the streaming microphone RGB no need to repeated selections after turnning off and brings itself alive when power on. (Only available for USB connection)
- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
- Intended source: A handheld vocal microphone may be shaped and built differently from a model intended for speech, instruments or another application.
- Polar pattern and off-axis response: The polar pattern describes how sensitivity changes with the direction sound arrives from. A microphone can reject some sound from particular angles, but placement, room reflections and off-axis tonal response still affect what it captures. See Shure’s guide to microphone directionality and polar patterns.
- Frequency response and shaping: Published response ranges describe a model’s specified frequency limits; they do not, by themselves, establish which microphone will sound better for a particular voice or instrument.
- Output, connector and physical fit: Check sensitivity or output specifications, connector type, microphone dimensions, and compatibility with the cable, stand or clip you intend to use.
Two vocal microphones, two pickup patterns
The Shure SM58 and BETA58A illustrate why specifications should be compared model by model. Shure lists the SM58 as a cardioid dynamic vocal microphone with a 50–15,000 Hz frequency response. The BETA58A guide specifies a supercardioid pattern and a 50–16,000 Hz response. These published ranges and patterns describe the individual products; they do not prove that one sounds better or is the right choice for every setup.
| Model | Pattern | Published frequency response | Stated use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shure SM58 | Cardioid | 50–15,000 Hz | Professional live sound reinforcement and studio recording |
| Shure BETA58A | Supercardioid | 50–16,000 Hz | Dynamic moving-coil vocal microphone |
For the SM58, Shure also lists a built-in spherical wind and pop filter, a pneumatic shock mount, a steel-mesh grille, and a supplied stand adapter and storage bag. Its frequency response and construction are specific to this model, not to all dynamic microphones. Consult the SM58 product information and the SM58 user guide for its specifications and operating guidance.

How to position and handle a vocal dynamic microphone
Shure’s SM58 guide offers practical placement advice for that microphone. Adapt it to the model you use, and listen while adjusting position: the right distance and angle depend on the room, source and desired sound.
- Aim the microphone toward the intended singer, talker or instrument and away from unwanted sources.
- Place it as close to the source as practical. Close use increases bass through the proximity effect, so move it farther away if that bass increase is not wanted.
- Use a windscreen outdoors to reduce wind noise, and do not cover any part of the grille.
- Avoid excessive handling, which can add unwanted noise.
- When using multiple microphones, Shure recommends keeping the distance between microphones at least three times the distance from each microphone to its source. Treat this as the guide’s rule of thumb, then listen and check for phase issues in the actual setup.
Check compatibility before adding accessories
Accessories are model-specific. For example, Shure’s PGA58 guide lists XLR cables C25J and C25F, clip A25D, thread adapter 31A1856, replacement grille RPMP58G and cartridge RPM150. Those examples do not establish compatibility with other microphones. Verify the precise model, connector and accessory part number in the applicable guide before ordering.
