If your keyboard is missing from Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting, first check whether its exact model supports Microsoft’s HID LampArray standard. RGB backlighting alone does not mean a keyboard is compatible. If it is compatible, verify its firmware and connection; if it appears but its effects do not respond, check which lighting controller has priority.
Check whether Windows sees the keyboard
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Make sure Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices is on.
- Look for the keyboard among the device cards near the top of the page. Microsoft says compatible connected devices appear there. If the keyboard has no card, continue with compatibility and connection checks. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting settings guidance
Confirm the exact keyboard model supports Dynamic Lighting
Dynamic Lighting support depends on HID LampArray compatibility, not simply on whether a keyboard has RGB lights. Microsoft lists keyboards among the supported LampArray device types, but that does not mean every RGB keyboard implements the standard. Check the manufacturer’s support information for the precise model and, where relevant, its hardware revision. Microsoft’s HID LampArray device guidance
Microsoft’s device documentation names Logitech G LIGHTSYNC RGB devices as supported. Treat that as a family-level statement, not confirmation for every keyboard in the family: check the exact model and its current firmware.
Update the keyboard firmware
Check the keyboard maker’s support page for firmware for your exact model and follow its update instructions. Microsoft’s November 14, 2023 Windows 11 update notice says compatible Dynamic Lighting devices must use the latest firmware. Updating firmware may be necessary for a supported keyboard, but it cannot make an incompatible model LampArray-compatible. Microsoft Support: KB5032190

Check the connection and normal keyboard operation
Connection checks help identify a USB, power, wireless, or driver issue. They do not add Dynamic Lighting support to an incompatible keyboard. If the keyboard also fails to type or disconnects, try the applicable checks below. Microsoft’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance
Wired USB keyboard
- Unplug and reconnect the keyboard, then try another USB port.
- Connect it directly to the PC rather than through a USB hub.
- Check that the cable and keyboard have power and are in good condition.
Wireless keyboard
- Check the battery or charge level.
- If the keyboard uses a USB receiver, reseat it and try another port.
- If it uses Bluetooth, check the Bluetooth connection and troubleshoot pairing if needed.
Drivers and another PC
- Check Windows Update or Device Manager for relevant driver updates.
- If the keyboard does not work normally, test it on another PC. Install any driver the manufacturer requires for that model.
If the keyboard appears but its lighting does not respond
When the keyboard has a card in Dynamic Lighting but Windows effects or brightness controls do not change it, another RGB controller may be taking control. Expand Background light control on the Dynamic Lighting page, inspect the listed controllers, and move the controller you want to use higher in the priority order when appropriate. Background-light settings are associated with both a device and its USB port. If you move a USB keyboard to another port, Windows may treat it as a different device for those settings; check the device cards and controller settings after reconnecting it.

Choose what to do if no keyboard card appears
- Keep the keyboard: If its exact model is documented as compatible, verify that its firmware is current and work through the connection checks above. The cause cannot be identified from the missing card alone; the keyboard model, connection, firmware, Windows build, and normal operation all matter.
- Consider a different keyboard: If the current model does not support HID LampArray, choose one whose manufacturer documents Dynamic Lighting or LampArray support for the exact model. Also check firmware support and whether its connection type suits your setup.
