The Dygma Sonsei is a compact, one-piece ergonomic keyboard designed to travel and, on some laptops, rest over the built-in keyboard. Its columnar layout, eight thumbkeys, Bluetooth, and USB connection make it an unusual alternative to a conventional portable keyboard. But it is not a fully split or tented ergonomic board, and Dygma’s laptop-fit results cover only a few tested devices—not every laptop. Whether it suits you depends chiefly on your laptop’s shape and whether you value a single portable unit over a more adjustable desk setup.
What is the Dygma Sonsei?
The Sonsei is a low-profile keyboard with a split-columnar key layout in a single unibody. The keys are arranged in columns rather than the staggered rows used by most conventional keyboards. It has eight thumbkeys, per-key RGB lighting, programmable layers and macros, hot-swappable switches, and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. The weight figures differ between Dygma’s specification page and FAQ, so treat the keyboard as roughly 0.4 kg rather than relying on a precise figure. Dygma says the body is 8 mm thick and stands 18 mm tall with switches and keycaps fitted. Product specifications · Dygma’s Sonsei FAQ
Can you place the Sonsei on top of a laptop keyboard?
Dygma says it tested the Sonsei on 13-inch, 14-inch, and 15.6-inch laptops. On the tested 13-inch MacBook and 14-inch laptop, the keyboard rested on the laptop’s top and side edges, with its feet raising it above the laptop keys. On the tested 15.6-inch laptop, the Sonsei sat above some of the built-in keys. That is a limited set of manufacturer tests, not a guarantee for every laptop chassis. The Sonsei footprint is 299 × 140 mm; compare that with the usable top surface and edge shape of your own laptop. If the board contacts built-in keys on your device, those keys could register, even though Dygma did not encounter that issue on its tested 15.6-inch laptop. Dygma says users who experience unwanted keystrokes can disable the laptop keyboard in Windows or macOS; the exact method depends on the computer and operating-system setup.
How portable is it, and what comes in the box?
The unibody design means there are no separate keyboard halves to arrange or keep together. Its 299 × 140 mm footprint is still substantial compared with a compact laptop keyboard, so check your bag and intended surface rather than assuming that “travel” means pocket-sized. The single-piece construction is the main portability trade-off: it is easier to deploy as one unit, but you cannot spread the halves apart to adjust their spacing.

How long does the Dygma Sonsei battery last?
Dygma lists a 2,000 mAh battery and claims up to 40 days with the LEDs off. For continuous use, its product specifications say more than eight hours at 100% brightness; its FAQ gives around 16 hours at 50% brightness and approximately 24 hours at 30% brightness. Dygma’s setup guide has noted that the displayed battery level on the current firmware may drop quickly at first and then decline more slowly, and that the company was working on it. What are the layout and ergonomic trade-offs?
One piece, not a fully split keyboard
The Sonsei’s keys are split into columns, but the board itself is not divided into two separate halves. You cannot set the halves at independently chosen distances or angles. Dygma says it chose a unibody to make the keyboard easier to use on a laptop, lap, or cramped travel tray; it also acknowledges that some people may prefer a fully split keyboard for a permanent desk setup. No built-in tenting or pointing device
Dygma says it considered tenting and reverse tilt but prioritized a thin keyboard without external parts to carry. It also says it tested an integrated touchpad and judged the available surface too small for precise use, especially with an external display. These explanations describe the manufacturer’s design choices; they do not establish that the Sonsei will improve comfort or prevent strain for an individual user.
If your priority is adjusting hand separation, tenting, or tilt at a fixed desk, the Sonsei’s form is a real constraint. If your priority is one board that can move between desk, lap, and laptop, the same fixed construction may be more convenient.

Learning and configuring the columnar layout
Moving from a conventional row-staggered keyboard to columns changes the path your fingers take to reach keys. The Sonsei’s eight thumbkeys and programmable layers offer ways to assign functions where they suit your workflow, but remapping and adapting take time. Dygma’s configurator supports remapping, layers, and macros. The hot-swap sockets are specified for Gateron KS-33 2.0 low-profile switches. Dygma says third-party keycaps need to be both low-profile and MX-stem compatible; custom thumbkeys can be replaced with standard 1u keycaps. - Measure your laptop’s top surface and check whether its edges can support the 299 × 140 mm board without pressing built-in keys.
- Decide whether you need independently positioned halves, tenting, tilt, or an integrated pointing device; the Sonsei does not provide those features.
- Choose USB or Bluetooth based on your setup, and account for the fact that battery life varies with lighting and use.
- If you plan to replace switches or keycaps, verify KS-33 2.0 and low-profile MX-stem compatibility for the exact parts.

Who should buy the Dygma Sonsei?
The Sonsei makes the most sense for someone who wants a single, programmable columnar keyboard for a mobile setup and whose laptop can safely support it. It is a less natural fit for a buyer who wants a fully split, tented desk keyboard or expects universal laptop-top compatibility. Dygma’s specifications describe a feature-rich travel-oriented board, but there is no independent hands-on assessment here to establish how its layout or ergonomics will feel for you.
