Whether you can move a DVR recording to a computer depends on the DVR model, its outputs, and any copy restrictions. Start by finding the make and model and checking the rear-panel ports; then choose a supported network transfer, provider-app download, or real-time analog capture. These routes do not all produce a reusable computer video file.
First, identify your DVR and its available outputs
Find the make and model on the DVR’s label, in its settings, or in its manual. Check the rear panel for network connections and video outputs. Look specifically for yellow composite RCA video with red and white RCA audio, or an S-Video port with analog audio. Do not assume a DVR has usable analog outputs just because it has HDMI.
Before buying capture hardware or installing software, check whether the exact DVR supports the route you want, whether the recording is permitted to transfer, and whether the software works with your computer’s operating system. The manufacturer documentation cited below was accessed October 7, 2026; availability, app eligibility, and compatibility can change.
Compare the three ways to get a DVR recording off the device

Option 1: Transfer eligible recordings from a compatible TiVo
TiVo’s legacy TiVo Desktop guide describes a network-transfer workflow for eligible programs. It is not a universal method for all DVRs, and a recording’s presence in the Now Playing list does not guarantee it can be copied.

- Check the exact TiVo model, current software availability, account settings, and compatibility with your computer’s operating system.
- Connect the TiVo and computer to the network as required by the compatible software and confirm that the DVR appears.
- Select the DVR, open its Now Playing list, choose an eligible recording, and start the transfer.
TiVo says copy-protected programs are marked and cannot be transferred. Its copy-protection guidance also explains that provider-assigned restrictions can block TiVoToGo and related transfers; restricted recordings may show a red circle-slash symbol. Option 2: Download an eligible cloud recording in a provider app
Xfinity documents downloads of completed cloud DVR recordings through its Stream app to supported Apple or Android devices. Not every recording is available, and the documented process is mobile-app based. A download for playback in the app is not automatically an editable video file you can copy to a PC or Mac.

Check Xfinity’s current eligibility and device requirements before relying on this option. Its support pages explain how to download a DVR recording and how app downloads and device limits work. A downloaded recording may be checked out to the selected device, so do not assume it can be moved freely to another device or computer.
Option 3: Capture analog playback on your computer
Analog capture is useful only when the DVR exposes an output accepted by the capture device and the playback signal is capturable. It records what comes out of the DVR while the program plays; it is not a direct digital copy of the stored recording.

1. Match the DVR output to the capture device
Check the rear panel and manual for composite video (usually a yellow RCA connector) plus red and white analog audio, or S-Video plus analog audio. Confirm that the capture device accepts the same connections. Elgato says its Video Capture device supports DVRs and set-top boxes with composite or S-Video output; its guidance says S-Video offers higher clarity than composite on that device. If the DVR has only HDMI, this analog procedure will not connect to it.
2. Connect the equipment and install its software
- Connect the DVR’s video and audio outputs to the matching inputs on the capture device.
- Connect the capture device to the computer. Elgato’s quick-start instructions for its Video Capture specify a free USB 2.0 port.
- Install the capture device’s software and follow its setup wizard.

3. Choose the correct input format and framing
In the capture application, select the capture device and choose the video standard and aspect ratio if prompted. Elgato documents NTSC, SECAM, PAL, and PAL/60 input support for this product. For letterboxed 4:3 material, its guidance recommends a 4:3 setting to avoid stretching the image. The cited product captures standard-definition video: 640×480 at 4:3 or 640×360 at 16:9. Those are product specifications, not a guarantee of the quality of a particular DVR recording. Its PC software lists H.264 at 1.4 Mbit/s. See Elgato’s supported video formats.

4. Test, then capture the full recording
- Make a brief test capture. Check that the picture and sound are present and that the image is framed correctly.
- Cue the DVR recording, start capture in the computer software, and then start playback on the DVR.
- Let the recording play to the end. This method runs in real time, so a one-hour recording takes at least one hour to capture.
- Save the result where you have enough free storage, play it back to check it, and keep a second copy if the recording matters to you.
5. Troubleshoot a missing picture, sound, or signal
- Confirm the DVR is playing the recording and that you selected the output you connected.
- Check that the capture device’s input matches the cable type, and verify that the software is using the capture device.
- Reseat the cables and confirm the capture device supports the DVR’s output and video standard.
- If the device still reports no signal, the output or signal may not be supported or capturable. A converter is not a reliable fix for copy protection or an incompatible signal.
Know the limits before choosing hardware or starting a transfer
Copy restrictions can prevent copying or capture
Restrictions may block a network transfer, and some signals may not be capturable. Respect copy protection and do not attempt to defeat DRM, HDCP, or other access controls.

HDMI and analog capture are different
Elgato states, “Elgato Video Capture does not have an HDMI input.” The cited Video Capture product is for standard-definition analog inputs, not HDMI. A separate HDMI capture device works only if it supports the signal and that signal is not protected; Elgato says HDCP-protected HDMI signals cannot be used with its cited Game Capture HD hardware. Analog output limits quality and takes time
The captured video cannot exceed what the DVR outputs and the capture device can record. It also requires uninterrupted playback for the duration of the program, unlike a supported file transfer.

Choose the route that matches your goal
- Need a computer file? Start with the exact DVR model’s supported transfer features. A provider app download may remain limited to mobile-app playback.
- Have a compatible TiVo? Check the legacy software, operating-system, account, and recording eligibility requirements before attempting its network transfer.
- Have composite or S-Video outputs? Analog capture may work if the device accepts those inputs and the signal can be captured; test before recording a full program.
- Have only HDMI, or a restricted recording? The analog route described here does not apply, and restrictions should not be bypassed.
