The safest way to solve a Dupery case is to treat every statement as evidence with a source, not as truth. Record who said each clue, separate its literal wording from your interpretation, connect it to other testimony on the detective board, and keep uncertain conclusions visibly uncertain. Only arrest when several independent clues support the same explanation: arresting a good-aligned character lowers reputation, while too much reputation loss can end the run.
This guide covers the core Steam game, not the separate promotional puzzle described on the official help page. The mechanics and role descriptions below come from the official Dupery Steam listing.
What you are actually solving in Dupery
Dupery is a single-player, noir deduction roguelite built around procedurally generated grid cases. Each case contains characters aligned with good or evil. You investigate them, collect imperfect accounts, cross-reference what they tell you, map relationships and claims on an in-game detective board, and then make arrests.
The official product description summarizes the central loop as: “Cross reference what you hear, compile imperfect information using strings, pins and pen on your detective board and make your arrests.” That wording matters. The game is not asking you to identify a suspicious personality by intuition alone; it asks you to assemble a defensible explanation from information whose reliability depends on the speaker.

The named role categories are Innocent, Meddler, Underling and Traitor. Underlings lie, Traitors are more deceptive, and even a character who appears well-meaning may be compromised. Your objective is to arrest every evil role while protecting good-aligned characters well enough to preserve reputation.
The full-game listing also describes three campaign regions, region-specific mechanics and roles, role selection between missions, quirks and modifiers, and a final boss confrontation for each campaign. The available information does not provide a reliable region-by-region rulebook, so the tracking method below is designed to remain useful when a region changes the particular clues or roles you encounter.
Set up a reliable clue record before making deductions
Dupery gives you strings, pins and a pen, but the store description does not prescribe a formal symbol system. Use the tools to preserve four separate facts for every clue: its speaker, its literal content, what it concerns, and how certain your interpretation is.

Place a pin or written label beside the character who supplied the information, then connect the statement to the suspect, location or event it describes. Do not leave a free-floating note such as “saw someone near the gate.” Write “Mara says she saw someone near the gate,” because the source affects how much weight the statement deserves.
Source tracking also lets you detect coordinated or self-protective accounts. Two claims that appear to corroborate each other are not truly independent if both come from the same unreliable character or simply repeat one another.
2. Copy the literal claim before interpreting it
First record exactly what the character asserted. On a second line, write your inference. For example:
- Observation: “The lantern was lit after midnight.”
- Inference: “Someone had access to the east corridor after midnight.”
- Status: Unconfirmed until another clue establishes who could reach that corridor.
This separation prevents a plausible explanation from silently becoming a fact. It also makes it easier to erase or revise an interpretation when a later clue conflicts with it.

3. Mark the subject and scope
Attach each note to the precise person, place, time or object named in the statement. A claim that a character was “near the archive” is not the same as a claim that the character entered the archive. A statement about one time window should not be stretched to cover the entire night. Narrow notes give you something precise to cross-reference.

4. Give every link a confidence state
Use a simple three-state system on the board:
- Supported: multiple compatible clues point to the same relationship or event.
- Open: the clue is recorded, but no conclusion follows yet.
- Contradicted: another statement or role constraint conflicts with it.
You can represent these states with different pin placements, line styles or short labels. The symbols are your own working method, not an official Dupery rule. Their purpose is to stop an attractive hunch from looking identical to a verified connection.
A step-by-step investigation workflow
- Survey the case before committing. Note every available character, location and obvious relationship. Resist the urge to choose a culprit during the first conversation.
- Interview and record each account. Keep the speaker attached to every clue and copy the literal wording before adding an interpretation.
- Sort clues by what they can establish. Group claims about whereabouts, relationships, access, timing and observed actions. A timing clue can corroborate an alibi; it may not prove a character’s alignment by itself.
- Cross-reference across different speakers. Look for independent agreement, incompatible times, impossible access and claims that depend on one another.
- Test the role explanation. Ask whether a contradiction is better explained by a lying role, a mistaken but good character, or an incorrect assumption on your board.
- Promote only corroborated links. Change an “open” connection to “supported” when separate evidence converges. Keep a note of which clues support it.
- Review every candidate before arresting. Check the character’s account, the strongest contrary clue and the consequence of being wrong.
- Update the board after new information. Procedurally generated cases and imperfect information mean an earlier interpretation may need revision rather than defense.
This workflow is deliberately slower than arresting the first suspicious character. The reputation system makes unsupported commitment expensive, so the time spent preserving uncertainty is part of solving efficiently.
How to reason about the four named role categories

| Traitor | An evil-aligned role described as more deceptive. | Expect a convincing account to require stronger corroboration. A polished or sympathetic presentation is not evidence of innocence. |
The public description does not publish a complete reliability hierarchy for every individual role. Therefore, use the categories as hypotheses about how to evaluate testimony, not as a shortcut that labels someone from a single line of dialogue.

Cross-reference clues instead of counting suspicious statements
Build an evidence chain
For each important theory, write the chain in order: source account, factual claim, connection to the case, and independent support. For example, a character’s statement about being away from a location becomes meaningful only when another clue establishes that the location mattered at that time and a separate account supports or contradicts the claimed absence.
A chain with one speaker repeated three times is still one source. A chain with different speakers, a location constraint and a time constraint is stronger because each part tests a different assumption.
Use contradictions as questions
When two accounts conflict, do not immediately mark one speaker guilty. Ask what the conflict actually proves:
- Do the statements refer to the same time and place?
- Could both be true if one speaker misunderstood what they saw?
- Does either character have a reason or role-based capacity to lie?
- Is the contradiction direct, or does it arise from an inference you added?
Only after narrowing those possibilities should you use the contradiction to raise a character’s suspicion level.

Corroboration means a second clue independently supports the first. Two characters repeating an identical rumor may indicate shared information, collusion or a copied account. Mark the relationship between the statements on the board so you do not mistake volume for independence.

Record disconfirming evidence
For each leading theory, reserve a small area for facts that would make it fail. This is particularly important when a character appears helpful. The listing warns that even apparently well-meaning characters can be compromised; helpful behavior should therefore be weighed alongside, not instead of, contradictory evidence.
Use the detective board as a model, not a memory aid
The board’s strings, pins and pen are most useful when they show relationships at a glance. Arrange your notes so that a reader unfamiliar with your current theory could tell which facts are direct observations and which are interpretations.
Suggested board layout
- Character area: one pin or label per character, including alignment hypotheses only when supported.
- Statement area: short literal summaries attached to the speaker.
- Connection area: strings from statements to suspects, locations or events.
- Uncertainty area: open questions and links awaiting corroboration.
- Contradiction area: pairs of statements that cannot both be true under the current assumptions.
Keep your notation compact enough to revise. A board packed with permanent declarations encourages you to defend old conclusions. Removable or clearly marked tentative links make updating easier when new evidence arrives.
When an arrest is justified
Arresting a good-aligned role reduces reputation. If reputation falls too low, the detective can be fired. Solving a case requires arresting all evil roles and increases reputation. That creates two different risks: a wrongful arrest can damage the run, while stopping after one correct arrest can leave evil roles active.
Run a pre-arrest checklist
- What exact behavior or fact makes this character an evil-role candidate?
- Which clues support the conclusion, and who supplied each one?
- Is at least one supporting clue independent of the suspect’s own account?
- What is the strongest explanation that does not require this character to be evil?
- Have later clues changed the meaning of an earlier statement?
- Could the same evidence implicate another character more strongly?
If you cannot answer these questions without converting a guess into a fact, leave the arrest for later and continue investigating. This is a practical decision rule inferred from the stated reputation stakes, not a developer-published threshold.
Do not stop at the first correct arrest
Because the stated objective is to arrest all evil roles, one successful arrest does not validate every other suspicion. Remove the arrested character’s claims from your active theory only where appropriate, then reassess which remaining accounts still fit. A co-conspirator may have been hidden by the first suspect’s testimony, or your original interpretation may have depended on the wrong speaker.

Treating everyone as truthful
Why it fails: Underlings lie, Traitors are more deceptive, and apparently good characters may be compromised.
Fix: Keep source labels on every clue and test important claims against independent evidence before relying on them.

Confusing a plausible explanation with proof
Why it fails: A story can fit the first few clues while failing when timing, access or another witness is added.
Fix: Write the observation and your interpretation separately, then mark the interpretation “open” until another clue supports it.
Forgetting who said what
Why it fails: Detaching a statement from its speaker removes the role-dependent context needed to evaluate reliability.

Arresting on suspicion alone
Why it fails: A wrongful arrest costs reputation and can contribute to being fired.
Fix: Require a documented evidence chain and actively search for a competing explanation before committing.
Defending an old theory after new evidence
Why it fails: Procedurally generated cases vary, and imperfect information means an early inference can be wrong.

Assuming a sympathetic character must be safe
Why it fails: The listing explicitly allows apparently well-meaning characters to be tainted.
Fix: Treat kindness, helpfulness or confidence as behavior to record, not as an alignment verdict.

Procedural generation means memorizing a previous solution is less useful than maintaining a repeatable process. Begin each case with a blank evidence structure, then let the available statements determine which relationships matter. Do not import an old assumption about a role, location or clue pattern unless the current case independently establishes it.
The full-game listing describes three campaign regions with different mechanics and roles, plus role selection between missions and optional quirks or modifiers. Since the public listing does not specify every regional rule, read each case’s information on its own terms. A modifier that changes how a clue appears or which roles are present should make you more careful about scope, not less careful about sources.
Between missions, role selection can change the information environment you will face. Use that choice to favor a setup you can track clearly rather than one that encourages you to rely on unverified assumptions. The right choice depends on the roles and modifier combination shown in your run; no universal selection is established by the public description.
Demo and full-game scope: what the published numbers mean
The Steam pages publish different figures for different editions and dates. Keep them separate:

The official help page describes a separate Dupery promotional ARG. Its code-solving clues should not be assumed to be clues, rules or walkthrough steps for the solo deduction game. For in-game cases, use the characters, role information and detective-board tools described in the Steam product listing; consult the help page only when you are specifically trying to understand the promotional ARG.
