Dating-app profile roasts can turn familiar swipe-era frustrations into quick comedy, but the format depends on more than a sharp punchline: whether the person being mocked agreed to be part of the joke matters. Examples range from voluntarily submitted profiles to commentary on profiles or public statements, and those formats do not carry the same consent or exposure concerns. Online comments show some people are tired of roast language and unsolicited ridicule; they do not establish that most app users feel that way or that fatigue is growing.
What counts as dunking on a dating profile?
“Profile roasting” describes several related but distinct kinds of content. A creator might comment on app profiles, a participant might submit a profile for a planned critique, or a video might respond to something someone said publicly about dating. Treating all three as the same obscures the most important difference: how the person became the subject.
- Commentary on app profiles: Montreal creator Dylan Burrows, for example, posted a TikTok joking about men’s Hinge profiles. Narcity described it as the first video in a series after it became popular. Burrows joked, “I’ve had Hinge for all of two hours, and I’m gonna have to delete it. It’s f*cking hell out here.” That is one reported example of a profile critique becoming serial content, not evidence of how widespread the format is.
- Submitted-profile entertainment: Cosmopolitan’s “Read My Profile” series featured dating profiles submitted by participants for celebrity critique. A person choosing to submit a profile changes the consent context compared with a creator filming or reposting an identifiable profile without clear permission.
- Responses to public statements: A 2022 George Washington University feature covered Drew Afualo’s videos responding to men’s misogynistic, racist, or fatphobic statements. That is related roast-style commentary, but it is not necessarily a review of a dating-app profile.
Why the format can work as entertainment
A profile is a compact, highly familiar object: a photo, a few prompts, and an attempt to make a stranger interested. That makes awkward phrasing or dating clichés easy to recognize and turn into a joke. A creator can give viewers the feeling of sharing a private reaction to something they have encountered while swiping.

The joke can also be aimed at the choices on the page rather than at a person’s inherent traits. That distinction helps explain why a submitted-profile critique can function as participatory entertainment, while an unsolicited public callout can feel exposing. But a funny premise does not, by itself, tell viewers whether the subject agreed to be included or whether identifying details remain visible.

Why some viewers are tired of it
Some Reddit commenters object not only to roast videos but to the repeated invitation to “roast me” in dating profiles. One wrote, “I can’t even put into words how sick I am of seeing these phrases on profiles.” Another distinguished roasting from banter, saying it can feel like an insult without consent. Those are individual comments, not representative survey results, but they show how the same joke format can read as stale or unwelcome rather than playful.
Other comments frame the issue as a boundary: “roasting without having knowledge of the other person is just being mean.” In that view, mutual teasing depends on knowing the other person and having some basis to expect they welcome it. A profile’s presence on an app does not automatically mean its owner agreed to become the subject of a public comedy video.

Consent and exposure change the joke
Four practical questions help distinguish a roast that is closer to shared entertainment from one that risks turning a stranger into a target. They are editorial considerations, not a formal platform or legal standard.

What moderation examples do—and do not—show
The George Washington University feature reported that TikTok removed many of Afualo’s videos and temporarily banned her account four times after complaints that a target had been put on blast. The feature also quoted Rebekah Tromble, director of the university’s Institute for Data, Democracy, and Politics, calling Afualo “a real threat to the trolls” because “she understands them better than bots and can fight them on their terms.” That was Tromble’s view in a 2022 feature, not an established consensus.

The account is a reported example of roast-style videos drawing complaints and moderation. It does not establish how TikTok currently handles profile-roast videos, how every similar video is treated, or that all roasting is harassment.

The available examples support a tension, not a population-wide verdict: profile roasting has been packaged as entertainment, while some commenters describe roast prompts as repetitive and unsolicited ridicule as mean. They do not measure how many people watch, make, or dislike this content, or whether dissatisfaction is increasing. “Content gold” is therefore a description of the format’s comedic appeal, not a quantified claim about engagement or creator earnings.
