Choose Duck.ai (DuckDuckGo AI Chat) if privacy-oriented defaults, several providers’ models, and the ability to keep AI optional matter most. Choose Google Gemini if your work depends on Google-connected apps, file and screen sharing, image editing, video generation, or other integrated workflows. Neither is universally better. Duck.ai’s privacy and retention statements are DuckDuckGo’s published commitments, while Gemini gives you account controls but still processes and may retain chats under stated conditions.
Duck.ai and Gemini answer different needs
Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo’s interface for chatting with models supplied by several outside providers. Gemini is Google’s assistant and chat service, built around Google’s own models and connections to Google services. Both can handle ordinary questions, drafting, summarization and brainstorming, but their documented strengths are different.
The practical decision is not a score for “intelligence.” No current, methodologically sound comparison establishes which service is faster, more accurate or better at every task. Instead, decide how you want your data handled, whether you want to choose among model providers, and whether an assistant connected to your files, apps and device is worth the additional account-linked processing.

Privacy: what is actually stored and used
“Private” is too broad a label for either consumer service. Compare remote retention, model-training use, possible human review, sign-in status, connected data and the controls available to you. Do not paste confidential material into either service unless your organization has approved that use.

Duck.ai’s default chat handling
DuckDuckGo says that, by default, Duck.ai does not record or store chats and that conversations are not used to train models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying providers. This is a company-stated design and policy, not an independent audit of every provider or configuration.
There are important exceptions. You can deliberately share a conversation with DuckDuckGo as feedback. Sync & Backup and some optional features store chats in end-to-end encrypted form; DuckDuckGo says it cannot read those encrypted chats. The Recent Chats feature keeps history locally on your device rather than on DuckDuckGo’s remote servers. You can delete an individual local chat or clear the local history with the Fire Button, and DuckDuckGo says you can pin up to five chats.
DuckDuckGo also describes a privacy-preserving matching step. It computes an embedding of a prompt in memory to match it with a representative prompt from an open dataset. The submitted prompt embedding is discarded immediately after matching. The matched open-source prompt and anonymous aggregate interaction statistics can be retained. Therefore, “not stored by default” does not mean that no technical or aggregate information is ever processed.

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice applies to signed-in use and supplements Google’s general Privacy Policy, which covers signed-out use. Google says Gemini may process prompts, uploaded files and media, generated content, information from connected apps, device or app context where applicable, and location. That information can be used to provide, maintain, improve, develop, personalize and customize services.
Keep Activity, auto-delete and review/delete controls affect what is associated with your account, but turning Keep Activity off does not stop processing needed to answer you or protect Google, users and the public. Google says chats made with Keep Activity off, and Temporary chats, are retained with the account for 72 hours for those purposes. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models. With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to improve AI models unless you submit feedback.

Google also says some chats can be reviewed by human reviewers. Reviewed chats and related data may be retained for up to three years, and Google says that data is not deleted when you delete activity. That is why Temporary Chat should not be described as anonymous or as leaving no server or account retention.

Models and provider choice
Duck.ai’s listed free models
DuckDuckGo’s current model page lists these free choices:
- Anthropic Claude 4.5 Haiku
- Mistral AI Mistral Small 4
- OpenAI GPT-5.4 nano
- OpenAI GPT-5.4 mini
- gpt-oss-120b hosted by Tinfoil
- Gemma 4 31B hosted by Tinfoil
Switching the selector changes which model generates the answer. Provider moderation policies still apply. DuckDuckGo says it does not filter or modify the responses and warns that they can be inaccurate or offensive, so model choice is not a guarantee of safety or correctness.
Duck.ai subscriptions
DuckDuckGo says Plus adds GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 4.6. Pro adds Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol, a higher reasoning effort than Plus, and twice the Plus usage limits. Model names, tiers and limits are time-sensitive. The official pages reviewed here do not establish a current dollar price, so check the checkout or plan page for your country before subscribing.

What Gemini changes
Gemini presents a service built around Google’s model family rather than a selector spanning unrelated providers. The sources reviewed here do not establish a complete, permanent model list, current usage limits or a universal plan price. Google can expose different models and features by account, subscription, device and region, so treat labels in your own Gemini interface as authoritative for your account.

Gemini is the stronger fit when the task benefits from context outside a blank chat box. Google documents Connected Apps and interactions involving uploaded files, images, videos, screens and, where enabled, device or app context. It also documents image editing, video generation, screen-based interactions and Search-grounded responses for some prompts.
These capabilities are useful for workflows such as asking questions about a file you upload, working from a shared screen, editing an image through a prompt or generating a video concept. They also increase the amount of information leaving your immediate prompt. Before enabling a connection, inspect the app’s permissions and decide whether the material is suitable for a Google account-linked service. Feature access can vary by region, settings and eligibility; seeing a capability described by Google does not guarantee that it is enabled for your account.
Duck.ai’s documented advantage is deliberate separation from that type of ecosystem. It gives you a model conversation and provider choice without requiring you to make Google Drive, Gmail or device context part of the workflow. If you need a self-contained writing or question-answering window, that narrower design can be an advantage.
Optionality and search controls in Duck.ai
DuckDuckGo describes AI as optional rather than making it inseparable from every search. Search Assist can be set to often, sometimes, on-demand or never. A reader who wants conventional search most of the time can select on-demand or never and still open AI assistance when needed.

This control is separate from choosing a chat model. You can reduce Search Assist while continuing to use Duck.ai directly, or use the chat interface without turning on every AI enhancement in search. That distinction matters if you want AI available as a tool rather than as the default layer over all searches.
Cost, limits and availability
Both services have changing free and paid offerings. Duck.ai has free models and the Plus and Pro tiers described above, but the material available for this comparison does not establish a current dollar price. Gemini’s current plan names, regional prices, usage limits and eligibility were not established either. A precise price-versus-price verdict would therefore be misleading.

How to choose: a practical decision framework
Choose Duck.ai when these statements describe you
- You want DuckDuckGo’s published no-recording/no-training defaults rather than a Google account-centered history.
- You want to switch among models from Anthropic, Mistral AI, OpenAI and other listed providers.
- You prefer an AI feature that can be reduced or disabled in search.
- You do not need Gmail, Drive, device context, screen interaction, image editing or video generation in the same workflow.
- You are comfortable checking each model’s response and provider moderation behavior yourself.
Choose Gemini when these statements describe you
- Your work already lives in Google-connected apps and the time saved by that context outweighs the additional data processing.
- You regularly share files, images, videos or screens with an assistant.
- You need a documented path to image editing, video generation or Search-grounded answers.
- You can manage account activity, Keep Activity, Temporary Chat, auto-delete and connected-app permissions deliberately.
- Your account and region actually offer the feature you need.
Use a two-service workflow when your tasks are different
You do not have to make one service your universal assistant. A privacy-sensitive brainstorming task can stay in Duck.ai, while a permitted document workflow can use Gemini’s connected context. Keep the boundary explicit: do not paste the same confidential material into both services, and do not assume that a chat treated one way by Duck.ai receives identical treatment when copied to Gemini.

For Duck.ai
- Confirm which model is selected before sending the prompt; the provider changes with the model.
- Review whether you have enabled Sync & Backup or another optional feature that stores encrypted chats.
- Use Recent Chats knowing that this history is local to your device, and delete individual entries or use the Fire Button when appropriate.
- Do not share a conversation as feedback unless you accept that it is an exception to the default handling.
- Set Search Assist to often, sometimes, on-demand or never according to how much AI you want in search.
For Gemini
- Open Gemini’s activity controls and decide whether Keep Activity should be on or off for the task.
- Use Temporary Chat when you want the temporary-chat behavior Google documents, remembering that Google still retains it for 72 hours.
- Review connected-app permissions before attaching Drive, other Google services or third-party context.
- Check auto-delete and review/delete controls rather than assuming that deleting visible activity removes every reviewed copy.
- Keep confidential information out of prompts, uploads and feedback unless your organization has approved the exact setting and service.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“Duck.ai never keeps anything.”
That overstates the policy. Default chats are described as not recorded or stored, but feedback sharing, encrypted optional storage, local history, in-memory embedding and anonymous aggregate statistics are documented exceptions or processing steps.
“Gemini’s Temporary Chat is anonymous.”
Google’s stated 72-hour account retention contradicts that shorthand. Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models, but they are still processed for responses and safety, and human-reviewed data can have a longer retention period.

“Keep Activity off stops Google from processing my prompt.”
It does not. Google says processing needed to answer and protect users continues. The setting changes future use for model improvement unless you submit feedback, not the basic operation of the service.
“The service with more features is automatically better.”
Connected apps and multimodal tools help only when you need them and accept their permissions. If your task is a short, self-contained question, provider choice and data-minimizing defaults may matter more than video or screen features.
“A model list proves which service gives the best answers.”
Model names identify available generators, not comparative quality. The documented material contains no independent benchmark of accuracy, speed, reliability or safety. Evaluate a model on your own representative, non-confidential tasks before relying on it.

What can change after you make your choice
AI model catalogs, plan names, limits, connected apps, regional eligibility and privacy language change frequently. Recheck DuckDuckGo’s model and AI-approach pages and Google’s Gemini Privacy Notice and feature documentation when you renew a subscription, enable a new integration or begin handling sensitive work. A setting that is available today may move, gain an exception or require a different account tier later.
For the decision documented here, the durable distinction is workflow: Duck.ai emphasizes optional, provider-switchable chat with DuckDuckGo’s published privacy commitments; Gemini emphasizes a Google account-connected assistant with richer app and media interactions and explicit activity controls. Match that distinction to your own data and tasks rather than treating either product as universally superior.
