Short answer: Duck.ai and ChatGPT protect data in fundamentally different ways. Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo’s interface to models operated by other companies; DuckDuckGo says it strips identifying metadata, does not store chats by default, and has agreements intended to prevent model training on Duck.ai conversations. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s own service, with account-level controls such as “Improve the model for everyone” and Temporary Chat. Neither service should be treated as automatically appropriate for secrets, regulated information, or material covered by a separate confidentiality policy.
The practical choice depends on what you mean by privacy: avoiding an account, minimizing the service’s own records, controlling model training, keeping a searchable history, using memory, uploading files, or speaking by voice. The sections below separate those issues instead of assigning either chatbot a blanket “private” label.
What is the difference between Duck.ai and ChatGPT?
Duck.ai is a privacy-focused chat interface from DuckDuckGo. It sends prompts to selected third-party large-language models rather than running one single DuckDuckGo model. The model picker and available plans can change, but the basic architecture remains: DuckDuckGo receives your request, applies its privacy measures, and forwards the request to an external model provider.
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s consumer chat service. OpenAI operates the service, the account system, the conversation history, and the model-improvement settings. Its controls therefore focus on what OpenAI may use or retain, while Duck.ai’s controls focus on reducing what DuckDuckGo and its model providers can associate with a prompt.

This distinction matters because a provider’s privacy promise is not the same as a guarantee that no system ever handles the data. Routing, abuse prevention, optional history, feedback, file moderation, voice processing, account administration, and legal obligations can all change the data path.
Is Duck.ai more private than ChatGPT?
For a person who wants no account and wants to minimize routine chat storage, Duck.ai has the stronger default described in its privacy documentation. DuckDuckGo says it removes identifying metadata, including the IP address, before sending a prompt to a model provider. It also says it does not record or store Duck.ai chats by default and that neither DuckDuckGo nor the underlying providers use those conversations to train chat models.
That is a vendor-described technical and contractual design, not an independent security audit. DuckDuckGo says its provider agreements require deletion of prompts and responses after an answer is generated, prohibit training, and prohibit commercial sharing with other third parties. The same documentation describes exceptions: OpenAI and Anthropic may use short-term prompt caching for up to one hour, with the cache not written to disk, and Anthropic may retain material when required by law or to address malicious use.

Temporary Chat goes further for the active conversation: it does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used for model improvement while temporary. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety.
Consequently, “more private” depends on the threat or requirement:
- No-account use and default minimization: Duck.ai is designed around this goal.
- A visible account setting that separates training from history: ChatGPT provides this through its model-improvement control.
- No history and no memory for a particular conversation: ChatGPT Temporary Chat is the relevant control, subject to safety retention.
- Guaranteed suitability for trade secrets, health data, legal work, or regulated records: neither product’s consumer documentation alone establishes that suitability.
How Duck.ai handles prompts and chats
Default routing and metadata removal
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai removes identifying metadata before forwarding a prompt. The example it gives is the IP address. This is intended to reduce the model provider’s ability to connect the prompt with your network identity. It does not mean that the text itself is anonymous: a prompt can contain your name, employer, account number, location, or distinctive facts, so do not place identifying details in a request merely because the IP address is removed.

Provider retention and training restrictions
According to DuckDuckGo’s help documentation, its arrangements with model providers require zero data retention after a response is generated, prohibit training on Duck.ai chats, and prohibit commercial third-party sharing. DuckDuckGo also documents limited exceptions. OpenAI and Anthropic can temporarily cache prompts for up to one hour; DuckDuckGo says those caches are not written to disk. It says Anthropic may retain conversations when law requires it or when retention is needed to investigate malicious use.

These statements describe the service’s stated controls. They should not be read as proof of an independently verified zero-retention system, nor as a promise that a court order, abuse investigation, or safety process can never affect retention.
Features that create a record
Duck.ai’s “not stored by default” statement does not cover every optional feature.
- Recent Chats: DuckDuckGo’s product overview says recent conversations are stored locally on your device. Local storage can remain available to anyone who can unlock the device or access its browser profile.
- Sync & Backup: This optional feature stores chats in end-to-end encrypted form. Encryption reduces access by the service, but it still creates a synchronized copy rather than leaving the conversation only in the current session.
- Feedback or sharing with DuckDuckGo: Sending a conversation through feedback is an explicit choice to share it with DuckDuckGo for that purpose.
- Uploaded files and images: Duck.ai says uploads may be checked for child-sexual-abuse material by a third-party moderation provider and, in some cases, by the model provider. A file flagged this way may be retained and reported.
Before using Duck.ai for a sensitive document, decide whether local history, backup, feedback, or file moderation is necessary. The safest privacy setting is not to upload information that you are not authorized to send to an external AI service.
Voice processing
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai voice chat and dictation send audio to OpenAI for processing. It says the voice data is not kept after the session and is not used to train models, but it also warns that a person’s voice is distinctive and can function as a biometric identifier. Disable voice features if a spoken sample itself is sensitive, even when the words are innocuous.
How ChatGPT handles training, history, and deletion
Turning off model improvement
On an eligible consumer account, open ChatGPT’s settings and select the control labeled Improve the model for everyone. Turning it off affects the use of new conversations for model improvement; it does not remove those conversations from your chat history. History, retention, memory, and model-training preferences are separate decisions.

OpenAI says control availability can vary by account, plan, workspace, and product version. If you use ChatGPT through an employer, school, or another managed workspace, the organization’s administrator and retention policies may take precedence over the controls visible in a personal account.
Using Temporary Chat
Choose Temporary Chat when you want a conversation that does not appear in normal history and should not create or update memories. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve models while temporary. They may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety, so Temporary Chat is not an immediate-destruction button and should not be described as zero retention.
Deleting a conversation
OpenAI says deleting a chat removes it from your account immediately and schedules permanent deletion within 30 days. Exceptions apply if the content has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account or if security or legal obligations require retention. Deleting history therefore reduces account access, but it is not a guarantee that every technical copy disappears at the same instant.
Managed workspaces
OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Administrators can control access, retention, connected applications, and other workspace behavior. A business user should read the organization’s policy rather than assuming that a personal-account setting, such as Temporary Chat, has the same effect in a managed environment.
Duck.ai features and limits
Multiple models and model switching
Duck.ai lets users switch among available third-party models. This can be useful when one model is better at drafting, another at summarizing, or a third at a particular style of reasoning. Model names, availability, and subscriber access can change, so check the current model picker rather than relying on an old list. Switching models does not remove the privacy considerations described above; the selected provider still processes the prompt.
Images and PDF uploads
Duck.ai supports image and PDF uploads on some models, not necessarily every model. DuckDuckGo’s help page lists these PDF limits:

Spreadsheets are listed as unsupported. If a spreadsheet is essential, export only the minimum necessary data to a supported format after removing names, identifiers, hidden columns, comments, and formulas that reveal confidential information. Do not assume that a successful upload means every model can inspect every element of the file.

Daily and subscription quotas
Duck.ai imposes a daily free-use limit. Subscribers receive higher usage, with daily and weekly caps that DuckDuckGo says reset at midnight UTC and Sunday midnight UTC, respectively. The exact quotas are volatile and may differ by model or plan. Check the live account page before planning a batch job or a time-sensitive workflow; a quota reset is not the same as unlimited use.
Unfiltered model output
DuckDuckGo warns that responses may contain inaccurate or offensive information and says Duck.ai does not filter or modify model responses, although the underlying providers may apply their own moderation. Privacy protection does not improve factual accuracy. Verify calculations, quotations, medical or legal explanations, code, and summaries against reliable sources before acting on them.
ChatGPT features and limits that affect privacy
Memory and personalization
ChatGPT can offer memory and personalization controls, but the exact labels and behavior depend on plan, region, account, app version, and workspace settings. Memory is separate from ordinary chat history: deleting a conversation does not automatically answer every question about information already saved as a memory. Review the memory controls and remove individual saved items when the interface provides that option.
Connected apps and permissions
ChatGPT can provide connections to apps or services in some accounts. A connection can expand what the assistant can read or act on, so review each permission, disconnect unused integrations, and avoid granting broad access merely to solve a one-time task. Workspace administrators may impose additional restrictions.

OpenAI documents export and deletion controls, but export is not the same as deletion. Exporting creates another copy of your conversations under your control; deleting a chat or account follows the retention schedule and exceptions described earlier. Keep exported files encrypted and delete them from download folders, backups, and shared drives when they are no longer needed.

Step-by-step privacy setup
Before using Duck.ai
- Decide whether the prompt contains personal, confidential, regulated, or identifying information. Remove names, account numbers, exact locations, and unnecessary quotations.
- Use Duck.ai without an account if you do not need synchronized history.
- Check whether Recent Chats is enabled and delete local conversations from the device when they are no longer needed.
- Leave Sync & Backup disabled unless you have a reason to create an encrypted synchronized copy.
- Do not send a conversation through feedback unless you intentionally want DuckDuckGo to receive it.
- Choose a model that supports the needed task, then confirm its current upload and quota limits before sending a file.
- Disable voice features when the speaker’s identity or voiceprint is sensitive.
- Review every uploaded file for hidden metadata and confidential material; do not upload spreadsheets because DuckDuckGo lists them as unsupported.
Before using ChatGPT
- Open the account or workspace settings and identify whether the control is labeled Improve the model for everyone.
- Turn that setting off if you do not want eligible new consumer conversations used for model improvement.
- Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not appear in history or update memory, while remembering the possible 30-day safety retention.
- Review memory settings separately and remove saved memories that you no longer want retained.
- Audit connected apps and permissions; disconnect integrations that do not need ongoing access.
- Delete finished chats from history and understand the 30-day deletion schedule and its legal, security, and de-identification exceptions.
- If the account belongs to a business, school, or healthcare workspace, read the administrator’s retention and access policy instead of applying consumer assumptions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“No training” means “nothing is retained”
Training use and operational retention are different. Duck.ai’s stated provider restrictions address training and post-response deletion, but document temporary caching and legal or abuse-related exceptions. ChatGPT’s model-improvement opt-out leaves history in place, while Temporary Chat can still be retained for safety.
“Local” means “private from everyone”
Duck.ai Recent Chats being stored locally protects them from routine server history, not from another person who can access the device, browser profile, backups, or screen. Use device encryption and account protection, and delete local history when appropriate.
“Deleted” means “irrecoverable immediately”
ChatGPT’s stated process removes a deleted chat from the account immediately and schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions. Plan accordingly when a legal hold, security investigation, or de-identification process may apply.

Removing an IP address does not remove facts you type into the prompt. A detailed incident report, rare medical description, or internal project name can identify a person or organization by itself.
Privacy controls guarantee correct answers
Duck.ai explicitly warns about inaccurate or offensive responses, and no privacy setting validates an answer. Keep a separate verification step for high-impact decisions.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The available information consists primarily of DuckDuckGo and OpenAI help and privacy documentation. It explains each company’s stated policies and controls, but it is not an independent security audit, a controlled head-to-head privacy test, or an accuracy benchmark. No published comparison establishes that one service is categorically safer or more accurate.
Plan names, model menus, upload caps, quotas, retention language, and account settings can change. Region, app version, account type, and workspace administration can also change what a user sees. Verify the current setting immediately before adopting either chatbot for a consequential workflow.
Which chatbot should you choose?
Choose Duck.ai when
- You want to start without an account.
- You prefer DuckDuckGo’s stated approach of removing metadata and not storing chats by default.
- You want to switch among third-party models.
- You can work within model-specific upload and quota limits.
- You are willing to manage local history, optional backup, feedback sharing, and voice settings yourself.
Choose ChatGPT when
- You need OpenAI’s account-based history and controls.
- You want a visible model-improvement opt-out while retaining history.
- You need Temporary Chat for a session that should not enter normal history or memory.
- You are using a managed Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace whose policies have been reviewed.
- You need a workflow built around the current ChatGPT plan and its available tools, subject to account and regional availability.
For either choice, minimize the data you send, secure the device or account, review optional features, and verify important output. The most defensible privacy decision is usually to keep sensitive data out of a consumer chatbot unless your organization has separately approved the service and its contractual, technical, and retention controls.
