A DSLR is a digital camera that uses a mirror to direct light from its lens to an optical viewfinder. When you take a picture, the mirror moves aside and the camera’s image sensor records the exposure. DSLR stands for digital single-lens reflex.
What does DSLR stand for?
Each word describes part of the camera:
- Digital: The camera records images with an electronic image sensor rather than film.
- Single-lens: The viewfinder and the image sensor use light entering through the same taking lens.
- Reflex: An internal mirror reflects light toward the optical viewfinder while you compose a shot.
How does a DSLR work?
While you frame the shot
Light enters through the lens and strikes a mirror inside the camera. The mirror directs it upward, typically through a prism that sends the image to the eyepiece. You see an optical view of the scene through the lens, rather than a preview generated from sensor data.
Canon describes the DSLR light path this way: “The light (image) that passes through the lens is reflected by a mirror placed in front of the shutter curtain.” (Canon Global, “Digital SLR Cameras,” September 12, 2022.)

Pressing the shutter releases the mirror, clearing the path between the lens and the sensor. The shutter controls how long light reaches the sensor, which records the image. Because the mirror moves out of the optical path, the viewfinder’s view is briefly interrupted during exposure.

How is a DSLR different from a mirrorless camera?
The main difference is how you view the scene. A DSLR uses a reflex mirror and an optical viewfinder; a mirrorless camera leaves out that mirror mechanism and uses image data from the sensor for an electronic viewfinder or screen. An electronic viewfinder can display a preview of image settings, while a DSLR’s optical finder shows a direct optical view through the lens.
These are design differences, not a guarantee that one camera type will take better photographs. The result depends on the camera, lens, settings, and how it is used.

Does “single-lens” mean a DSLR only works with one lens?
No. “Single-lens” refers to the shared path used to view and photograph a scene: light comes through the taking lens for both. A DSLR can use interchangeable lenses, but compatibility depends on the camera’s lens mount. For example, Canon says its EF lenses fit Canon EOS DSLR bodies in both full-frame and APS-C formats; that statement applies to Canon equipment, not every DSLR.
