ds4, or DwarfStar 4, is a C-based local inference engine for a selected set of model families and project-specific GGUF layouts—not a universal GGUF runner. The DwarfStar project currently lists DeepSeek V4 and V4.1 Flash, GLM 5.x, and Qwen3.8 Flash Next, with Metal, CUDA, and ROCm backends. Whether it fits your machine depends on the exact model, quantization, context length, available memory, and backend.
What ds4 does—and what it does not do
DwarfStar 4 (ds4) is an open-source inference stack written in C for running supported large language models locally. The project presents three ways to use it:

Its deliberately narrow scope is important. The project says it is “Not a generic GGUF runner” and validates supported model layouts end to end. A GGUF file that works in another inference application is not therefore guaranteed to load in ds4; use a model and layout documented for ds4. See the DwarfStar project site and the ds4 repository for current support and setup details.
Which models and backends does ds4 list?
The project’s current documentation lists these model families and hardware backends. Support means the project identifies them as targets; it does not promise that every variant will fit or run well on every compatible system.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
- 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
- PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
- Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

Check the project’s model-specific instructions before downloading weights: the supported quantization and file layout matter, not only the model-family name.
What hardware should you check before trying it?
The project points to Apple Silicon Macs with 64 GB or more, depending on model; NVIDIA DGX Spark and other CUDA Linux systems; and AMD Strix Halo or similar systems using ROCm. These are project-provided fit guidelines, not guarantees for every model or an assurance of a particular speed. Some configurations need more memory.
Match the model to available memory
Before committing to a model, check its variant and quantization, the machine’s available system or GPU memory, and how much memory your operating system and other applications consume. The project describes asymmetric 2-bit quantization for routed experts while preserving critical shared paths, but that design description is not a substitute for checking the actual model’s requirements.
Account for context length and storage
Longer prompts change the memory and performance picture. ds4 documents SSD streaming for cases where model weights exceed resident memory, and SSD-backed persistence for long prompt prefixes that can be resumed using a prompt hash. This makes storage part of the setup, but the project material reviewed does not establish a minimum drive capacity, interface, or throughput. Confirm the current model-specific guidance rather than assuming any SSD will meet a particular performance target.

- EVOLUTION RYZEN AI MAX+ 395 MINI PC - GMKtec EVO-X2 is the next evolution in AI mini PC Ryzen Strix Halo series. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) the core-count is effectively doubled, to 32 threads. Ryzen AI Max+ 395 has 64 MB of L3 cache and can boost up to 5.1 GHz, depending on the workload. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is currently rated as the "most powerful x86 APU" on the market for AI computing.
- AI NPU with XDNA 2 ARCHITECTURE - Powered by 16 “Zen 5” CPU cores, 50+ peak AI TOPS XDNA 2 NPU and a truly massive integrated GPU driven by 40 AMD RDNA 3.5 CUs, the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 is a transformative upgrade and delivers a significant performance boost over the competition. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 excels in consumer AI workloads like the llama.cpp-powered application: LM Studio. Shaping up to be the must-have app for client LLM workloads, LM Studio allows users to locally run the latest language model without any technical knowledge required and unleash their creativity and productivity.

Confirm the backend fits your system
Choose the build for the hardware path you intend to use—Metal on supported Apple hardware, CUDA on NVIDIA systems, or ROCm on compatible AMD systems—and verify the project’s current prerequisites. Backend availability does not mean the same model, memory requirement, or performance applies across all three.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to get started
The project quickstart describes cloning the repository, downloading a project-provided model GGUF, building for the selected backend, and launching the CLI or server. Its examples include a Metal build on macOS and a CUDA build for DGX Spark; the commands and prerequisites can change, so follow the current repository instructions rather than relying on copied commands from an older guide.
- Choose a model and quantization explicitly listed for ds4.
- Check that your operating system, hardware, memory, and backend match the current project instructions.
- Clone the repository and download the project-provided model file as directed by its quickstart.
- Build using the documented backend for your machine.
- Start the interactive CLI, local API server, or coding-agent interface according to the intended use.
How to judge performance claims
The DwarfStar site publishes reference benchmark rows for M5 Max (128 GB) and DGX Spark (128 GB), separating prefill from generation and showing 2,048-token and 65,536-token contexts. The page does not state the run date or provide full methodology in the reviewed content. Treat those figures as project-published reference benchmarks, not independent testing or a general promise of results on your machine.

A Hacker News commenter suggested that cloud-hosted models on larger systems may be smarter and faster; that is an individual opinion, not a measured comparison.
Quick Recap
Who is ds4 a fit for?
- Consider it if your target model is explicitly supported, your hardware meets the current project guidance, and you want one stack for local chat, API access, or persistent coding sessions.
- Look elsewhere or verify carefully if you need to load arbitrary GGUF files, depend on a model family not listed by the project, or need a guaranteed performance level that the published reference figures do not establish.
- Check before buying hardware if the model you want requires more memory than your current configuration or relies on SSD streaming. The project’s general hardware guidance is not a configuration-by-configuration guarantee.
