No: Nintendo DS Game Cards do not work in Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED. These consoles lack backward compatibility with games from earlier Nintendo systems, and Nintendo Switch Online does not currently list a Nintendo DS game library. To play an original DS cartridge, you need separate DS hardware.
Why a DS cartridge won’t work in a Switch
Switch consoles are not backward-compatible with Nintendo DS games. A DS Game Card cannot be inserted into a Switch and played, and Nintendo says older physical and digital games do not carry over or run on Switch. This applies to the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Nintendo’s Switch FAQ addresses compatibility with older Nintendo platforms.

A DS console, stylus, or other accessory does not make DS software run on a Switch. The limitation is the console’s game compatibility, not a missing accessory.

No Nintendo DS library is currently listed in Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ. The service lists classic libraries for NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Mega Drive; GameCube is listed for Switch 2. The catalog can change, so check Nintendo’s current Nintendo Classics FAQ for the latest supported systems.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
A Switch Online subscription therefore does not provide a way to play your DS cartridges on Switch. Classic games offered through the service are separate from original DS Game Cards.
What Nintendo has said about DS games on Switch 2
In an English translation of its shareholder Q&A dated June 26, 2026, Nintendo President and Representative Director Shuntaro Furukawa said, “At this time, there is nothing specific we can share about Nintendo DS or Nintendo 3DS software.” He also said Nintendo was working to make games it had released in the past playable on current hardware and would continue exploring possibilities. - New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
That answer is not an announcement of DS support, a release plan, or a schedule for Switch 2. Nintendo’s current list of available classic libraries does not include DS.
How to play original DS Game Cards
Use a compatible DS system
A separate Nintendo DS system is the direct hardware option for original DS cartridges. For example, Nintendo DS Lite has a dedicated Nintendo DS Game Card slot, as shown in its official instruction booklet. A DS Lite is separate hardware; it is not a Switch add-on.

Check a used system before buying
If you are considering a used DS Lite, check the console’s condition, whether a charger and stylus are included, and whether the cartridge slot accepts and reads games. These checks relate to buying a separate DS system, not to making a DS cartridge compatible with Switch.

Choose based on what you want to play
- You want to play a DS cartridge you own: Use compatible DS hardware, such as a DS Lite. The cartridge will not run on Switch.
- You want to play on your Switch: Choose Switch software or a currently supported Nintendo Classics game. A port or remake of a DS-era game is a separate Switch release, not DS cartridge compatibility; check each game’s platform before buying.
- You are considering Switch Online for DS games: It does not currently list a DS library, so a subscription is not a solution for playing DS Game Cards.
