Dry eye syndrome means your eyes either do not produce enough tears or the tears fail to protect the eye surface properly. That mismatch can cause scratchiness, burning, redness, light sensitivity and intermittent blurred vision. Mild cases may improve with lubricating drops and environmental changes, but persistent, worsening, painful or vision-changing symptoms need an eye-care evaluation because treatment depends on the underlying problem.
What dry eye syndrome actually is
The National Eye Institute (NEI) defines dry eye in plain language: “Dry eye happens when your eyes don’t make enough tears to stay wet, or when your tears don’t work correctly.” Tears are not just water. They form a thin film over the cornea, spread with each blink, reduce friction and help protect the surface. If the film is too sparse, evaporates too quickly or has an abnormal composition, the surface becomes irritated.
Nearly 16.4 million Americans have dry eye, according to an NEI patient page updated August 6, 2025. That figure is an estimate displayed by NEI; the page does not identify the underlying study year, so it should not be read as a current annual case count.

How it feels and when symptoms are concerning
Common symptoms include:
- A scratchy, gritty or foreign-body sensation, as if something is in the eye
- Stinging, burning or general irritation
- Redness
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred or fluctuating vision
Symptoms can vary during the day. Reading, driving, concentrating on a display or being in a dry or windy room may make them more noticeable. Some people experience watery eyes instead of an obvious lack of tears: irritation can trigger reflex tearing, but those watery tears may not remain on the surface long enough to restore a stable tear film.
Arrange an eye examination when symptoms persist, get worse, interfere with work or normal activities, or do not improve with appropriate lubricating drops. Significant pain, marked redness or a change in vision deserves prompt professional attention. Severe, untreated dry eye can damage the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye.
Why dry eye develops
Too little tear production
The lacrimal glands may not produce enough of the watery component of tears. Production tends to decline with age, and some autoimmune diseases can affect the glands. A clinician may need to distinguish a tear-production problem from irritation caused by another eye or eyelid condition.

A healthy tear film also contains an oily layer that slows evaporation. Meibomian glands in the eyelids supply much of that oil. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), a major cause of evaporative dry eye, can reduce or alter the oil supply. The result is a tear film that breaks up rapidly even when the eyes can produce a reasonable volume of tears.

Tears that do not function normally
Tear chemistry, distribution and the interaction between the eyelids and eye surface all matter. Inflammation, an irregular eyelid margin or an incomplete blink can make tears less effective. A person may therefore have symptoms despite a test showing that some tears are present.
Risk factors, medicines and surroundings
Risk is higher in people aged 50 or older, women, and contact-lens wearers. Certain autoimmune conditions also raise risk. Medicines can contribute, so bring a complete list of prescription drugs, over-the-counter products and supplements to an eye appointment rather than stopping anything on your own.
Air movement and low humidity increase evaporation. Smoke, wind, air conditioning and prolonged screen use are common aggravators. NEI specifically notes that dry eye can happen if you spend a lot of time looking at your computer, tablet or smart phone. Screen concentration often reduces blink frequency or produces incomplete blinks, leaving the surface exposed for longer intervals.

How an eye doctor checks for dry eye
Evaluation starts with your symptom pattern, medical history, contact-lens use, work environment and medicines. The clinician then examines the eye surface and eyelids. Testing is intended to identify which part of the tear system is failing, not merely to confirm that your eyes feel dry.

Slit-lamp examination
A slit lamp is a microscope with a focused beam of light. It lets the clinician inspect the cornea, conjunctiva, eyelid edges and visible tear film at high magnification. The examination can reveal surface damage, inflammation, blocked or abnormal meibomian glands, deposits from contact lenses and other explanations for irritation.
Schirmer’s test
For Schirmer’s testing, a narrow paper strip is placed at the lower eyelid to estimate how much aqueous tear is produced over a set period. The strip can feel unusual and may stimulate reflex tearing, so the result is interpreted alongside the examination and your symptoms rather than used as a stand-alone diagnosis.
Tear break-up time
Tear break-up time measures how long the tear film remains continuous after a blink. A short interval suggests instability, which is common in evaporative dry eye and MGD. The result helps the clinician decide whether improving the oil layer, reducing inflammation or addressing another cause is more appropriate than simply adding watery drops.
Eyelid and blinking assessment
The doctor may look for crusting, blocked glands, eyelid-position problems, incomplete closure or an abnormal blink. These findings can change the treatment plan substantially. Tell the clinician whether symptoms are worse with screens, contact lenses, overnight eye opening, outdoor exposure or a particular medicine.

Relief for mild symptoms: choosing an OTC lubricant
Artificial tears are the most common treatment for mild dry eye. They temporarily add moisture and reduce friction, but they do not correct every underlying cause. Follow the product directions and stop to seek advice if symptoms continue or worsen.
| Form | Practical use | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lubricating drops | Usually the easiest option during the day; useful before reading, screen work or exposure to wind | Shorter-lasting products may need repeated application; frequent use can make preservative exposure relevant |
| Gel drops | Thicker texture can last longer than standard drops and may suit intermittent daytime symptoms | Can temporarily blur vision, so use caution before driving or tasks requiring a clear view |
| Ointment | Often most practical at bedtime because it remains on the surface longer | Greasy texture and blurred vision make it inconvenient during waking hours |
Preservative-free tears may be appropriate for people who need drops frequently or who are sensitive to preservatives. The suitable formulation depends on how often you use it, your contact-lens routine and the advice of your clinician or pharmacist. Do not assume that a thicker product is automatically better.
Practical measures that reduce evaporation
These steps address common triggers and can be used while arranging an assessment:
- Take deliberate blink breaks. During sustained screen work, look away at regular intervals and blink fully several times. Position the monitor so you are not opening your eyes unusually wide.
- Reduce direct airflow. Keep fans, vehicle vents and air-conditioning streams from blowing toward your face.
- Increase ambient humidity when needed. A clean room humidifier can help in dry indoor air; follow the device’s cleaning instructions to avoid dispersing contaminants.
- Protect the surface outdoors. Wraparound sunglasses reduce exposure to wind and airborne irritants.
- Avoid smoke. Tobacco smoke and smoky environments can aggravate the ocular surface.
- Review contact-lens habits. Wear lenses only for the schedule prescribed, keep them clean and switch to glasses when lenses clearly worsen symptoms. Persistent discomfort while wearing lenses warrants an examination rather than simply changing brands.
When treatment must target the cause
Meibomian gland dysfunction
For MGD, an eye-care professional may recommend warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, physical heating and gland expression, or intense pulsed light. These approaches aim to improve the eyelid oil layer and reduce evaporation. They require correct technique and, in some cases, in-office treatment; aggressive squeezing or excessive heat at home can injure the eyelid or surface.

Inflammation and inadequate tear production
Prescription anti-inflammatory treatment can be considered when inflammation contributes to symptoms. NEI lists topical cyclosporine and lifitegrast for more serious dry eye. The FDA review also describes approved categories that include topical cyclosporine, lifitegrast, loteprednol etabonate and intranasal varenicline. Choice depends on examination findings, expected duration, side-effect risk and other health conditions. Steroid-containing treatment such as loteprednol requires clinician supervision rather than indefinite self-use.
Punctal plugs
Punctal plugs are small devices placed in the tear-drain openings to slow drainage and keep tears on the eye longer. They may help when drainage is contributing to inadequate surface moisture, but they are not a universal solution. An eye doctor decides whether plugging is suitable after checking for inflammation, infection and eyelid problems.
Structural problems and uncommon surgery
Eyelid surgery is uncommon and reserved for selected structural causes, such as an eyelid that does not close or sits abnormally. Surgery is not a routine next step for ordinary screen-related irritation.
Newer prescription categories and realistic expectations
The FDA review of perfluorohexyloctane describes two pivotal phase 3 studies in which the treatment produced statistically significant improvements in a clinical sign and a dryness symptom compared with saline. Those trial results do not guarantee the same benefit for an individual. Blurred vision was identified as a labeled risk. Ask the prescriber how the evidence applies to your tear-film pattern and what side effects require a call.
Available treatments control symptoms or address contributing mechanisms; the FDA review states that they do not provide a permanent cure. A plan may therefore combine daily habits, a lubricant and intermittent or ongoing clinician-directed therapy.
A sensible plan if you think you have dry eye
- Record the pattern for several days. Note when symptoms occur, screen time, contact-lens wear, outdoor exposure, medicines and whether vision clears after blinking.
- Remove obvious aggravators. Reduce smoke and direct airflow, take blink breaks and use wraparound eye protection outdoors.
- Try a suitable lubricant for mild symptoms. Select drops, gel or bedtime ointment according to the table above; consider preservative-free products if you need frequent dosing or have preservative sensitivity.
- Book an eye examination if symptoms persist or recur. Bring the product package and your complete medicine list so the clinician can assess interactions and formulation choices.
- Follow the prescribed schedule. Do not increase frequency, combine multiple medicated drops or continue leftover prescriptions without instruction.
- Escalate promptly for warning signs. Significant pain, substantial redness, new or worsening vision change, or symptoms that limit ordinary activities should not be managed indefinitely at home.
What a second look changes
Calling every irritated eye “dryness” can hide the mechanism that needs treatment. Low tear production, rapid evaporation from MGD, inflammation, eyelid problems, contact-lens issues and environmental exposure can overlap but are not interchangeable. Testing the tear amount and stability, examining the lids and matching treatment to the findings gives you a safer path than cycling through random products.
