DRW and Marex completed a total-return over-the-counter (OTC) swap on Derivnex, referencing the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index tokenized on Canton by Kaiko, according to an October 13, 2026 announcement from S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), Kaiko and Derivnex. The release describes it as the first OTC swap transaction on Canton and the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on distributed-ledger infrastructure; those priority claims are the companies’ claims, not independently verified findings.

What the transaction involved

The benchmark was the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index. The announcement’s shorthand reference to an “S&P iBoxx Index” does not mean the S&P 500: this swap referenced a specific index tracking liquid, investment-grade U.S. dollar bonds.

An OTC swap is a privately negotiated contract that can give counterparties exposure to an asset or index without requiring them to own it directly. Here, DRW and Marex entered into a total-return swap referencing the index. The announcement does not provide the contract’s detailed legal terms, so its general description of swaps should not be taken as a description of this transaction’s specific payment or risk provisions.

How the tokenized benchmark and trade were represented

Kaiko: benchmark tokenization and valuation data

Kaiko tokenized the index on Canton. The announcement says the token combines benchmark data with access permissions and usage rules, intended to let authorized participants use index data in digital financial workflows while preserving S&P DJI’s licensing and intellectual-property controls.

Kaiko also distributed signed official S&P DJI index values. Derivnex used those values to value the position over its lifecycle. The release does not disclose the token’s technical specifications or explain its precise permissioning mechanism.

Derivnex: transaction record and lifecycle coordination

Derivnex represented the trade on Canton as a smart contract containing its transaction terms. The release describes that representation as a shared, synchronized record for DRW and Marex to use in managing valuations and other lifecycle events.

Rank #2

Derivnex incorporates the Common Domain Model (CDM), which the announcement describes as a standardized digital representation of derivatives transactions and their lifecycle events. Derivnex CEO George Harrington said the platform provides counterparties with “a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle.” This is his description of the platform’s purpose, not independent evidence of measured performance.

What the announcement says is new—and what remains planned

The release characterizes the transaction as both the first OTC swap on Canton and the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on distributed-ledger infrastructure. The announcement supplies no comparative study or independent confirmation of those “first” claims.

It also describes connecting Derivnex-managed positions with digital cash and collateral on Canton as future functionality. That could, if implemented, allow margin, collateral and contractual payments to move on the same infrastructure. The release does not say those capabilities were live or used for this swap.

S&P DJI Chief Product Operating Officer Cameron Drinkwater described the transaction as showing how established benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional market structures. Kaiko CEO Ambre Soubiran said tokenized benchmark infrastructure could support institutional markets and products while preserving licensing, governance and operational standards. Marex Solutions CEO Nilesh Jethwa called the transaction a practical example of representing and managing OTC derivatives on distributed-ledger infrastructure. These are statements from participating companies; the announcement does not report independent measurements demonstrating efficiency, adoption or other benefits.

What is not disclosed

The October 13 announcement does not state the swap’s notional amount, pricing, maturity, cash flows, collateral terms or detailed allocation of counterparty risk. It provides no independent performance data, and does not disclose the smart contract’s technical specifications. Readers therefore cannot use the release to estimate the trade’s size, quantify its cost or determine how it performed relative to a conventional workflow.

The concrete information available is about the workflow’s design: a licensed index was tokenized with access and usage rules; signed official index values were distributed for valuation; and the trade was represented as a smart contract on Canton, with Derivnex supporting lifecycle coordination. The announcement describes digital-cash and collateral integration as a next step, not as an accomplished part of this transaction.
