Drupal released security advisory SA-CORE-2026-014 on October 14, 2026, fixing CVE-2026-108097, a critical remote-code-execution flaw in the core Field UI module. Drupal rates it 19/25. Core alone is not directly exploitable, but contributed modules and custom code can expose the vulnerable functionality; at least one known path requires no login.
Upgrade to the fixed release for your branch immediately. If an update cannot be completed, uninstall the core field_ui module as a temporary mitigation, understanding that Field UI administration will be unavailable.
What the Field UI vulnerability does
The vulnerable component
CVE-2026-108097 affects Drupal’s core Field UI (field_ui) module. The issue is in table rendering: before the fix, a table row’s #region_callback value could be executed as a PHP callable without validating that callback. An attacker who can reach a vulnerable table-building path could therefore reach remote-code-execution behavior.
Why a login may not be required
The Drupal Security Team says the defect is not directly exploitable with core alone. Contributed modules create multiple serious exploit paths, however, and at least one known path does not require authentication. Custom code that builds Field UI tables or sets #region_callback can also expose the behavior. Whether a particular site is reachable without a login depends on its installed modules, custom code and accessible routes; the advisory does not identify every vulnerable path publicly.

Drupal 10.5.x and earlier are also end of life. Sites on any unsupported branch should plan a supported-branch migration rather than expect a security backport.

What to do now
- Identify the branch and exact version. Record the running core version and whether the site uses Field UI, contributed modules that alter entity or field listings, or custom administrative tables.
- Apply the matching core update. Move 11.4.x sites to 11.4.10, 11.3.x sites to 11.3.19, and 10.6.x sites to 10.6.19. For 12.0.0-alpha1, the advisory identifies 12.0.0-beta2 as the fix, but that beta is not a production release.
- Inventory contributed modules separately. Core updates do not update contributed projects. Check each installed project’s security advisories and release notes, including modules that create entity or field listing tables.
- Review custom code. Search code that constructs Field UI tables or assigns
#region_callback. Test administrative screens and automated workflows after the update because callback behavior changes. - Check for signs of abuse. Review web, application and Drupal logs for unexpected requests or code-execution symptoms, preserve relevant evidence and follow your incident-response process if compromise is suspected.
If you cannot patch immediately
Drupal states that uninstalling the core Field UI module, field_ui, provides protection while the site is updated. Use the site’s module administration interface to uninstall it, then confirm that the module is disabled and that exposed Field UI routes are no longer available.

What changed in the patch
The fixed implementation no longer invokes a row’s #region_callback. It obtains the region from the row data and falls back to the table’s hidden region or its first region. This removes the unvalidated callable execution path.
Sites with custom code that depended on #region_callback for Field UI table rows should review that code and test the affected screens after upgrading. A page that previously relied on a callback to select a table region may need to provide the region directly in its row data.

Contributed modules remain a separate exposure
The Drupal advisory does not name all contributed modules that open exploit paths, and the complete list remains undisclosed in the cited coverage. Administrators therefore should not treat a clean core update as proof that every route is safe.
Entity List example
The Hacker News report identifies the contributed Entity List module as having a separate critical RCE advisory, CVE-2026-108099, with similar conditions and a known no-login path. Updating Drupal core does not update Entity List. Check that project’s own security guidance and update or remove it independently.

Managed protection can reduce exposure, but only partially
Drupal says Drupal Steward is already blocking some known attack vectors. It also warns that this protection does not cover all possible exploits. The secondary report names Acquia, Pantheon, Ironstar and Skpr as providers running Drupal Steward for customers. Such a service can be useful as an interim control while maintenance is scheduled, but it cannot replace core and module updates.
How urgent is the update?
The Drupal Security Team classified CVE-2026-108097 as critical with a 19/25 risk score. The Hacker News reported that, in the week beginning October 4, 2026, 151,442 of 531,499 reporting sites (28.5%) were on an affected branch that received no fix in that period. It also counted 90 reporting sites using Entity List. These figures describe reporting sites, not every Drupal installation, but they show that unpatched exposure is widespread.
The advisory was published October 14, 2026; the secondary report followed on October 15. Because a known exploit path is unauthenticated, internet-facing sites should treat the update as an emergency maintenance item rather than wait for a routine release window.
