Dropbox supports Windows 11 outside Windows S mode, so an app problem does not automatically mean the operating system is incompatible. First check whether Dropbox is running and what its sync status shows; then check requirements, network and security controls, installation issues, and only lastly consider an advanced reinstall.
First identify what is not working
Dropbox’s desktop app is available from the Windows taskbar notification area, and its synced files appear in the Dropbox folder in File Explorer. Check both places before changing settings: the taskbar icon helps show whether the app is running, while the icons beside files and folders indicate sync status. See Dropbox’s desktop-app guidance and its sync icon explanations.
- Dropbox will not open: Start the app from Windows and look for its taskbar icon.
- Dropbox opens, but files are waiting or not syncing: Check the sync status and investigate the connection or security controls.
- Sync icons are missing: Quit and reopen Dropbox. If that does not restore them, close other applications and restart the computer.
- Setup or an update fails: Use the installation checks below before attempting a more involved reinstall.
Check Windows and Dropbox requirements
Dropbox’s requirements, updated October 6, 2026, list Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for the desktop app, excluding Windows S mode. ARM processors are supported on those Windows versions. Windows Server is not supported; Windows S mode has a separate Dropbox Lite path. Check Dropbox’s current system requirements if your Windows edition or device architecture is uncertain.

Also make sure you are using the latest Dropbox desktop app. A supported version of Windows does not guarantee that every installation is current or that the app is running correctly, so use the symptom and status checks rather than treating Windows 11 itself as the cause.

If Dropbox opens but syncing stalls
A slow or unreliable connection can delay syncing, and a very large file can take longer than expected. If sync remains stuck, appears to be waiting, or does not start, check the network and whether firewall or security software is blocking Dropbox. Dropbox lists these as possible causes in its sync troubleshooting guidance.
Check firewall, antivirus, and managed-network restrictions
Firewall, antivirus, or other security software can block Dropbox access, sign-in, updates, or syncing. Allow Dropbox in the relevant software rather than turning off protection as a general fix. On a work or school network, an administrator may need to change network restrictions.

Dropbox’s firewall guidance identifies ports 80, 443, 17600, and 17603 for the desktop-app functions it describes. Apply only the changes relevant to the problem and your network; do not open ports indiscriminately. Check the guidance for the required Dropbox processes and ports before adjusting a firewall.

If Dropbox has trouble reading or writing a particular file, the cause may be an operating-system or hardware problem rather than a general sync outage. Dropbox’s file-sync troubleshooting discusses disk diagnostic and repair utilities for these cases, but does not establish one particular utility as the right choice for every Windows device.

If installation or an update fails
Follow Dropbox’s installation troubleshooting in this order:
- Confirm that the device meets Dropbox’s current system requirements.
- Check whether security software is blocking the installer, and allow the installer if appropriate.
- Make sure you are installing the latest Dropbox app.
- If the regular installer fails, try Dropbox’s full installer package.
A corporate network can also interfere with installation or syncing, so ask the administrator to check restrictions if the problem occurs only on that network.

Use an advanced reinstall only as a later step
Dropbox describes an advanced reinstall as a further troubleshooting step, not the first fix. It can remove settings from a previous installation. Before proceeding, read Dropbox’s advanced reinstall instructions and follow them carefully; Dropbox says the process should link to the same account that was previously linked to that computer.

After reinstalling, syncing may take time. Dropbox also warns that changes made to the account while the computer was offline can result in conflicted copies. Allow the app time to resync and review any conflict copies rather than assuming the reinstall instantly restores the previous local state.
