Yes—DroidDeck can run Steam and some Windows PC games locally on supported Android handhelds. It launches Valve’s Steam client in Big Picture mode and uses Valve’s ARM64 Proton compatibility layer; it is not simply streaming a game from another computer. Whether it works well depends on the Android device, its GPU and drivers, and the individual game.
How DroidDeck runs Steam games on Android
DroidDeck combines an Android app with a Linux and compatibility stack that runs on the device. The app launches Steam’s Big Picture interface, and ARM64 Proton is used to run Windows games. The project says Steam and Proton assets are fetched from Valve on-device; it is not an official Valve app and does not claim affiliation with Valve. Droid-Deck’s official README describes the approach.
This is different from remote play: the documented use case is local execution on the Android hardware, rather than sending video from a host PC or cloud gaming service. Local execution means the Android device itself must meet the app’s hardware requirements, and performance depends on that device.

The current README specifies Android 9 or newer and supported Adreno GPUs: Adreno 730 or newer, or Adreno 8xx. Adreno 6xx is listed as experimental. Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 GPUs are listed as unsupported.

Check the exact GPU in the device’s specifications rather than relying on a broad label such as “Android gaming phone.” If you are considering a Snapdragon Android gaming handheld, verify its specific GPU and look for current reports for that exact device. The project materials do not certify individual commercial models.
Meeting the listed GPU and Android requirements is not a guarantee that a particular game will run. Droid-Deck says hardware validation is limited and compatibility and performance vary by device. GPU drivers, translation layers, game requirements, and updates can all affect the result; the README does not establish universal compatibility or performance figures.

Install DroidDeck and allow for storage
- Download the APK from the official project releases: use Droid-Deck’s GitHub Releases page. The README says the project has no standalone website and warns against download links from sites claiming to be the team.
- Install the APK, then install the Linux runtime from the app’s setup flow. The README estimates about 3 GB for the runtime. Steam downloads on first launch, so leave additional room for its files and any games you install.
- Address Android’s child-process restriction if prompted or needed. The README says some devices require turning off “Restrict child processes” in Android Developer options. On Android 12 and 13 devices where that setting is unavailable, first launch presents a “Fix it for me” button to help automate setup.
- Press Play and sign in to Steam. The project documentation says Steam and Proton assets are fetched from Valve on-device; the Steam client then downloads on first launch.
- Install optional desktop and apps only if you want them. The README estimates about 1.1 GB additional for Desktop & apps, separate from the runtime estimate. Games and other added files require their own storage.
What else the app includes
DroidDeck also offers an optional Linux desktop and access to apps and emulators. The project’s 0.3.0 release notes, dated October 2, 2026, describe Steam Deck-style controls, Steam Input virtual pads, an Xbox 360 controller option, second-screen input options for dual-screen devices, a performance overlay, GPU driver pairing, Flathub ARM64 apps, user-added AppImages and Flatpaks, and in-app update channels. These are features documented for that release, not a promise that every option performs identically on every device. See the official release notes.

The optional desktop has practical limitations: the README says its compositing uses software rendering, and Firefox sandboxing is reduced under proot. That makes it distinct from a conventional Linux desktop installation. The README also says app logs are stored in private app storage and can be shared as a scrubbed ZIP when reporting a problem.

What to check before relying on it
- Device eligibility: confirm Android version and exact GPU against the README’s supported, experimental, and unsupported categories.
- Game-specific evidence: check for reports involving the same device, game, and software versions. General device compatibility does not establish that every Steam title will work.
- Setup and space: account for the runtime, first-launch Steam download, game files, and any optional desktop or apps.
- Controls and form factor: consider whether the device’s built-in controls, touch input, an external controller, or second-screen options suit the way you plan to play. The documented material does not require a particular controller accessory.
DroidDeck is most relevant to someone with an eligible Adreno-based Android handheld who wants to try running Steam locally and is comfortable with setup and variable compatibility. For a device outside the stated GPU support, or for a game that must work reliably, the project documentation alone is not enough to promise a successful experience.
