Non-commission dresses unlock after you complete your third customer commission in Dressmaker (Build 443). After that milestone, open the sketchbook, create a pattern, choose measurements, select any materials and accessories you have unlocked, cut and sew the garment, then choose whether to sell it off the rack, keep it, delete it, or gift it. Non-commission work gives you creative control, but your available gold, patterns, and materials still limit what you can make.
This guide explains the unlock condition, the in-game fabrics and construction process, what “storage” actually means, how selling differs from gifting or deleting, and what is—and is not—known about bonuses.
What non-commission dresses are
Dressmaker is a single-player dressmaking simulation from Cozy Lives, published by Free Lives. Steam lists the release date as September 21, 2026. Its main loop is to choose cloth, arrange and cut pattern pieces, sew a garment, decorate it, and then either complete a customer commission or put a finished design on display for an off-the-rack sale.
A commission starts with a customer’s requirements. A non-commission dress starts with your own design idea. You can experiment with the silhouette, measurements, fabric combination and decorations without trying to satisfy a particular request. The finished item can then become a shop-window display or remain part of your collection until you decide what to do with it.

The freedom is not unlimited. Build 443 still checks your coin balance and the patterns, fabrics and accessories you have unlocked. An off-the-rack project cannot use an item that your save has not made available, even though the mode itself is unlocked.
How to unlock off-the-rack (non-commission) dresses
The current requirement
The current Build 443 off-the-rack guide says the feature becomes available after the third commission. In practical terms, finish three customer dresses first; the game then exposes the non-commission workflow. A removed Steam community guide used different wording about an unlock after the first three dresses, but because that guide is no longer available, Build 443 is the safer authority for the exact requirement.
What counts as a commission
A commission is a customer order that you complete and turn in through the normal customer workflow. Simply opening a pattern, abandoning an order, or making a private design does not establish the third completed commission. If the off-the-rack option does not appear, check that three customer garments have actually been delivered and that the game is running the current build.
Unlock checklist
- Accept a customer commission.
- Draft and construct the requested garment.
- Turn it in through the customer hand-in action.
- Repeat until three commissions have been completed.
- Return to the sketchbook and look for the off-the-rack or sale choice when starting a new design.
Completing commissions is also the game’s documented way to earn reputation and coin. The Steam store description states: “Turn in your dresses to your customers to gain both reputation and coin.” Those resources help you afford future materials and satisfy any unlock conditions that depend on progression.
Materials you can use
Named fabric types
The official store description names five fabric families: cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. Their appearance and the designs you can build around them are part of the creative system, but the checked game documentation does not publish a complete table of fabric statistics, prices, durability or sale multipliers. Do not assume that one named fabric automatically produces a higher payout.

Patterns and decorations
You design in a sketchbook, add fabric samples and appliqué, arrange and cut pattern pieces, preview the result on a mannequin, sew it, and finish it with decorations. The store description specifically mentions buttons, bows, lace trims and other accessories. These are in-game choices, not real-world sewing supplies that you must purchase separately.
Pattern pieces must fit on the cloth you have available. A visually appealing concept can fail at the cutting stage if the pieces, seam allowances or margins no longer fit. Save your more elaborate combinations for when you have enough cloth and the relevant pattern or accessory unlocks.

How much cloth a bolt provides
NKB Gaming’s 2026 fabric guide reports that a standard fabric bolt contains 150 area units of usable cloth. The same guide cautions that seam allowances and cutting margins can reduce practical layout space to approximately 135–142 units. Those figures are guide-specific advice, not values confirmed by the official Steam documentation, so treat them as planning estimates rather than fixed rules for every bolt or build.
When a layout is close to the limit, leave room for the game’s required margins instead of arranging pieces edge-to-edge. If the preview rejects the arrangement, reduce the number of pieces, choose a smaller pattern, or move to another bolt before spending additional materials.
Making a non-commission dress: exact workflow
- Open the sketchbook. Start a new design after the off-the-rack feature is unlocked.
- Draft a pattern. Select the garment structure you want to build. The available pattern list reflects your current unlocks.
- Set measurements. Choose the dimensions for the design. There is no customer specification to satisfy in this mode, but the measurements still determine whether pieces fit and how the finished dress looks on the mannequin.
- Choose fabric. Pick from the cotton, linen, wool, silk, velvet and any other materials your save has unlocked. Confirm that you have enough gold and cloth for the selection.
- Add accessories. Apply available buttons, bows, lace trims, appliqué or other decorations. Decorations consume available options and may affect the final layout.
- Arrange pattern pieces. Place every piece on the fabric preview. Account for seam allowances and cutting margins; the 150-unit and 135–142-unit figures from the NKB Gaming guide are estimates, not a guarantee.
- Cut the fabric. Confirm only after checking the layout. Cutting commits the material to the project.
- Preview on the mannequin. Use the mannequin view to inspect proportions, color and decoration placement before sewing.
- Sew and finish. Complete the construction steps and apply the chosen finishing details.
- Choose the final action. Select the sale, keep, delete or gift action shown by the game. Read the confirmation label carefully before committing.
Build 443 keeps selling, deleting and gifting as separate actions. They are not interchangeable buttons, and selecting the wrong one can remove a design or send it away when you intended to sell it. Pause on the confirmation screen and verify the verb before accepting.

Commission versus non-commission: which mode fits your goal?

Use commissions when a predictable progression reward matters more than experimentation. Use non-commission work when you want to test a silhouette, coordinate fabrics, or make a display piece without a customer’s brief. You can alternate between the two; unlocking off-the-rack work does not replace the commission system.

Selling, keeping, deleting and gifting
Selling an off-the-rack dress
The Steam listing confirms that you can display your own designs in the shop window and sell pre-made dresses off the rack. Selling feeds the game’s coin and prestige/progression loop, but the checked sources do not publish a formula showing how fabric type, decoration count or style changes the payout.
Before confirming a sale, check the action label and the displayed result. If you are trying to recover value from surplus cloth, the removed community guide claimed that quick off-rack dresses could recover money. Because that guide was removed and its figures cannot be verified, treat the idea as a possible strategy rather than a guaranteed return or profit calculation.
Keeping a dress
Keeping a finished design lets you retain it for later use or display. The available documentation does not state a separate wardrobe-capacity limit, so do not assume that a fixed number of saved dresses is supported or required.
Deleting a dress
Deleting is a distinct action in Build 443. It is the destructive choice for a design you no longer want. Read the confirmation prompt; do not use the delete action as a substitute for selling when you are trying to earn coins.

Gifting a dress
Gifting is also separate from selling. The current guide describes it as a later action, but no checked source provides a complete list of recipients, friendship effects or item-specific rewards. If the interface offers both gift and sale choices, decide based on your goal: a sale is the documented commercial path, while a gift is a relationship or collection choice whose numeric benefit is not published.
What bonuses are confirmed?
Confirmed commission rewards
Customer turn-ins provide reputation and coin according to the Steam store description. These are the clearest documented rewards in the available material and are why commissions remain useful after non-commission dresses unlock.
Sale and prestige effects
The current guide describes selling as part of the coin and prestige/progression loop, and the Steam listing confirms the ability to sell pre-made dresses. However, no checked source publishes a numeric sale-bonus table, a fixed prestige amount, or a formula based on materials and decorations. Treat any exact multiplier or payout chart found elsewhere as unverified unless it is tied to a later, clearly identified game build.
Gifting rewards
No checked source publishes numeric friendship bonuses, reputation gains or other rewards for gifting. The safe conclusion is only that gifting is a distinct available action in the current guide; its exact payoff is not established.

These numbers do not tell you how many bolts, patterns or finished dresses your save can hold. The checked sources establish no in-game fabric-inventory limit and no wardrobe-capacity number. If a menu displays a local capacity meter in your build, rely on that live value rather than applying the installation requirement to it.
Practical storage checks
- Keep at least the published free space available before installation: 2 GB on Windows or 1 GB on macOS.
- Allow additional room for the operating system, updates and ordinary save backups; the published figures are minimum installation requirements, not a promise that no extra space will ever be used.
- For cloth and dress management, watch the game’s own inventory or project screen. Do not discard a design merely because you saw the 1 GB or 2 GB installation number.
Troubleshooting common problems
The off-the-rack option is missing
- Verify that three customer commissions were completed and turned in, rather than merely started.
- Check the build number; the current wording comes from Build 443.
- Return to the sketchbook after the third hand-in and start a new design.
- Confirm that you have enough coin and that the pattern, fabric and accessories you selected are unlocked.
The pattern will not fit
- Rearrange pieces with extra room for seam allowances and cutting margins.
- Use the NKB Gaming estimate of 135–142 practical area units from a nominal 150-unit bolt only as a planning guide.
- Reduce the pattern size, simplify decorations or choose another bolt.
You selected the wrong final action
Stop at the confirmation screen and read the exact verb. In Build 443, sale, delete and gift are separate actions. If the game has already accepted the action, the checked sources do not document a universal undo procedure, so treat confirmation as final and make a backup of important saves according to your platform’s normal save-management options.
You expected a bonus that did not appear
Only commission reputation and coin are explicitly documented. Sale payouts, prestige amounts and gifting or friendship rewards have no complete published numeric table in the checked sources. Compare the on-screen result with the action you chose, but do not assume an undocumented multiplier.

Complete three commissions to unlock non-commission dresses in Build 443. Then use the sketchbook to draft, measure, cut, sew and decorate designs from your unlocked materials, including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet. Sell finished pieces from the shop window when you want the off-the-rack route, and remember that keeping, deleting and gifting are separate choices. The only published storage figures—2 GB for Windows and 1 GB for macOS—refer to installation space; no authoritative in-game fabric or wardrobe capacity has been established. Commissions remain the documented source of reputation and coin, while exact sale and gifting bonuses are not published.
