Robots normally need both memory types. DRAM is the fast, volatile workspace used to run control software and process live camera, LiDAR, radar, microphone, vision and AI data. NAND flash is slower, non-volatile storage that keeps firmware, AI models, maps, logs and captured images when power is removed. A robot controller therefore uses DRAM for its active working set and NAND or managed flash for durable capacity.

That division explains why adding storage does not automatically make a robot process sensor data faster, and adding RAM does not create more room for programs or recorded missions. The correct upgrade, if an upgrade is possible at all, depends on the controller’s memory architecture, interface, firmware, environmental rating and backup design.

What DRAM does in a robot

Dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) is volatile working memory. It provides low-latency, high-bandwidth access while the robot is powered, so the processor can execute code and manipulate data without waiting for a storage device.

Live control and perception

During operation, DRAM commonly holds the active portions of the real-time operating system, motion-control code, sensor buffers, camera frames, point clouds, localization data and intermediate results from vision or AI inference. A robotic arm may use it for trajectory calculations and safety-monitoring state; an autonomous mobile robot may use it for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), obstacle detection and route planning.

Micron describes robots as continuously collecting camera, LiDAR, radar and microphone data for real-time AI inference, SLAM and decision-making. DRAM and low-power DRAM (LPDRAM) provide the fast access needed for that active data.

What happens when power is removed

DRAM loses its contents when power is removed. The memory controller must continually refresh DRAM cells while the system is running, and a shutdown, battery failure or reset clears the working data unless software has first written it to non-volatile storage.

The FANUC R-30iA KAREL Controller Reference Manual states that DRAM is non-battery-backed volatile memory and that information in it disappears between power cycles. This is why a file temporarily held on a controller’s RAM disk should be copied to permanent storage before shutdown.

DRAM reliability considerations

DRAM can experience transient soft errors, including bit upsets caused by electrical noise or radiation. Error-correcting memory, refresh and scrub operations can detect or correct some events, but the available protection depends on the controller design. In harsh industrial, high-altitude or space environments, the controller’s qualification and error-handling features matter as much as raw capacity.

What NAND flash does in a robot

NAND flash is non-volatile semiconductor storage. It retains data without continuous power, making it suitable for the files a robot must recover after a restart.

Persistent files and models

Flash commonly stores boot firmware, application software, neural-network models, calibration files, maps, system configuration, logs, mission records and captured images. Managed forms such as eMMC and UFS integrate a controller that handles tasks including address translation and flash management; NVMe SSDs provide a higher-capacity storage device over a suitable host interface. A controller may also expose a model-specific flash card or USB storage path.

Micron’s robotics overview assigns NAND flash and managed storage to AI models, maps, software, system logs and operational data that must survive a power cycle. Its infographic describes flash or SSD as retaining learned models, skills and identity data across power cycles.

Why flash is slower than DRAM

Flash reads and writes through storage protocols and erase blocks rather than the processor’s direct memory bus. It therefore has higher access latency and different throughput characteristics from DRAM. A robot can load a model from flash at startup, but the active model and its intermediate tensors generally need to be placed in DRAM or LPDRAM for time-critical inference.

Flash endurance and data protection

NAND cells tolerate a finite number of program-and-erase cycles. Repeated logging, image capture or database updates can consume that endurance, especially when a small area is rewritten frequently. Managed storage can distribute writes and reserve spare blocks, but the endurance rating and workload limits are specific to the device and controller. A replacement part must meet the original endurance and environmental requirements; capacity alone is not an adequate match.

Why a robot needs both

Robotic workloads combine two incompatible requirements: immediate access to changing data and retention of large, valuable files. DRAM supplies the first requirement; NAND supplies the second.

  1. Boot: Firmware and the operating system are read from flash.
  2. Load: The controller copies executable code, models and frequently used data into DRAM.
  3. Run: Sensors stream into DRAM buffers while control and inference algorithms work on the active data.
  4. Record: Logs, maps, images and updated configuration are written back to flash.
  5. Recover: After a power cycle, persistent files remain on flash and are loaded again into DRAM.

This pipeline also explains why storage can act as a buffer between devices with different data rates. In space robotics, a camera-local flash buffer can absorb images at the camera’s maximum input rate while SDRAM holds the working image pipeline, decoupling the camera frame rate from the rover computer.

DRAM and NAND flash compared

Characteristic DRAM or LPDRAM NAND flash or managed flash
Primary role Active working memory for code, sensor buffers, image processing and AI inference Persistent storage for firmware, models, maps, logs, images and configuration
Volatility Volatile; contents disappear when power is removed Non-volatile; retains data without power
Access behavior Very low latency and high bandwidth through the memory bus Higher latency through a storage interface; reads and writes use flash management
Typical capacity role Smaller active working set Larger durable capacity
Power behavior Needs power and refresh while retaining data Consumes power during reads, writes and controller activity, but retains data when off
Write endurance Not limited by flash program-and-erase cycles, although memory can suffer transient errors Finite program-and-erase endurance; workload, controller and device rating determine life
Error concerns Transient soft errors can alter live data; ECC, refresh and scrub may help Wear, bad blocks and uncorrectable errors require controller management and backups
Serviceability May be a replaceable module, soldered LPDRAM or proprietary board memory May be soldered eMMC/UFS, an NVMe device, a controller-specific card or supported USB media

How memory maps to common robot classes

The following figures are representative bill-of-materials ranges from Micron’s 2026 robotics infographic, not universal requirements or guaranteed upgrade targets. Actual capacity depends on software, sensors, model size, logging policy and the controller selected by the robot manufacturer.

Robot category Representative DRAM Representative persistent storage What the combination supports
Basic robots 2–8 GB DDR3/DDR4 32 GB eMMC Control software, modest sensor processing and local firmware or configuration
Fixed-function manipulators 8–64 GB DDR4/DDR5 8–32 GB eMMC or UFS Industrial motion programs, vision or process data with a defined function set
Autonomous mobile robots 4–64 GB LPDDR4/LPDDR5/LPDDR5X NVMe SSD or 64 GB or more of eMMC/UFS SLAM, navigation, multiple sensors, AI inference and mission logs
Humanoids 16–128 GB LPDDR5/LPDDR5X 1–4 TB NVMe SSD Large multimodal models, many sensors, extensive logs and captured media

These ranges should be read as architecture examples. A robot with more flash can retain more maps or recordings but still fail to run a larger model if its DRAM is insufficient. Conversely, additional DRAM cannot compensate for a storage device that is too small for firmware, models and logs.

A concrete controller example: FANUC R-30iA storage

The FANUC R-30iA KAREL manual distinguishes several storage locations: RAM Disk, FROM Disk, memory cards and USB memory sticks.

RAM Disk

RAM Disk is volatile workspace. Files placed there are lost across a power cycle unless they are copied to permanent media. The manual specifically recommends copying RAM-disk files to durable storage.

FROM flash storage

The manual describes Flash File Storage Disk (FR:) as a portion of FROM memory that functions as a separate storage device. It can store programs, system variables and other files. Because this flash storage does not require battery backup, its contents remain available when controller power is removed.

What this example does and does not prove

This architecture illustrates the general DRAM-versus-flash division, but the manual applies to specified R-30iA controller generations. Other robot controllers may use different names, interfaces, file systems or recovery procedures. Always use the documentation for the exact controller model and software revision.

Reliability lessons from space robotics

Space Robotics’ technical reference summarizes flight data showing why both memory technologies need protection and operational planning.

DRAM upsets can be managed

For ISS multiplexer DRAM, the reference reports a measured single-event-upset rate of 8.5e-8 SEU per bit-day across the 2005–2017 flight record. It explains that refresh and scrub operations can correct DRAM upsets. The figure is a mission-specific measurement, not a universal terrestrial failure rate.

NAND wear or failure can remove a computer path

The same reference reports that NAND flash degradation on Curiosity took one computer string out of service; the rover then operated on its backup string for 94.37 percent of the mission, based on cited mission records. This demonstrates the value of redundancy and a recovery plan when persistent storage becomes unreliable.

Camera-local buffering

Space Robotics lists a camera-local configuration of 128 Mbyte SDRAM and 8 Gbyte NAND flash for Curiosity’s MAHLI and Perseverance’s Mastcam-Z. The SDRAM holds the active image pipeline, while flash buffers image data arriving at the camera’s maximum input rate. The two memories solve different timing and retention problems.

Should you add RAM or flash storage?

Choose based on the symptom and the file or workload that is constrained, not on the memory label alone.

Add or specify more DRAM when

  • The controller runs out of working memory while several sensors, vision stages or models are active.
  • AI inference requires a larger model or larger intermediate tensors than the current working set can hold.
  • Applications are terminated or the system swaps heavily because active data does not fit in RAM.
  • Real-time processing must keep more camera frames, point clouds or maps resident at once.

These symptoms still require confirmation from the controller’s diagnostics. More DRAM cannot fix a slow sensor link, an overloaded CPU or software that has a memory leak.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add or specify more flash when

  • Firmware, maps, models, logs or captured images do not fit on the persistent device.
  • Mission recording stops because the storage volume is full.
  • The system needs separate datasets, language models or map regions retained across restarts.
  • Write-heavy logging is consuming a device that has inadequate endurance for the duty cycle.

More flash does not reduce DRAM latency. It may also require changes to partitioning, boot firmware, file-system support and recovery media.

Compatibility checks before buying or replacing memory

Production robots often use proprietary or soldered memory, so there is no universal upgrade part. Check every item below against the robot and controller documentation.

  • Memory interface: Confirm whether the system uses DDR3, DDR4, DDR5, LPDDR4, LPDDR5 or LPDDR5X for DRAM, and eMMC, UFS, NVMe, a controller-specific card or supported USB media for flash.
  • Physical form factor: A mechanically compatible module can still be electrically or thermally unsuitable. Soldered memory cannot be replaced like a plug-in module.
  • Capacity limits: Verify the maximum addressable capacity, supported device geometry and partition layout.
  • Firmware and boot support: Confirm that the controller firmware recognizes the replacement and that a larger device can boot and be formatted correctly.
  • Endurance: Match the flash program-and-erase rating and workload specification, especially for continuous logs, images or database updates.
  • Environmental qualification: Check temperature, vibration, humidity, shock and, where applicable, radiation qualification. Consumer-rated parts may not meet an industrial or space controller’s requirements.
  • Error protection: Confirm ECC, scrub, bad-block management and any controller-specific health monitoring.
  • Backup and recovery: Verify how programs, calibration, maps and system variables are exported and restored before changing hardware.
  • Vendor and revision compatibility: Use the exact controller model, board revision and software release listed in the service documentation.

If you are sourcing an industrial robot memory card, treat that phrase as a starting category only. Match the controller’s approved card type, capacity, file system and environmental specification rather than relying on a generic card that happens to fit.

How to protect robot data during shutdown and maintenance

  1. Identify volatile locations. Read the controller manual and list RAM disks, temporary partitions, sensor buffers and any data marked as volatile.
  2. Save the working files. Copy programs, calibration values, maps, logs and captured data from volatile space to the controller’s approved flash, removable card or maintenance media.
  3. Verify the copy. Check file names, sizes, timestamps or controller checksums, then open a representative program or map from the destination.
  4. Create an external backup. Export a complete controller image or the vendor-defined program and system-variable backup to supported USB or card media.
  5. Record versions. Note controller model, software revision, firmware, application version and the date of the backup so a restore does not mix incompatible files.
  6. Shut down normally. Use the controller’s shutdown procedure when available. Abrupt power loss can interrupt flash writes and leave files or file-system metadata incomplete.
  7. Test recovery. On a maintenance schedule, confirm that the backup media can be read and that a representative restore works on an approved test controller or recovery environment.

Common failure symptoms and the right response

Symptom Likely memory issue First response
Programs or temporary files vanish after restart Data was stored in volatile DRAM or RAM Disk Copy required files to approved permanent storage and revise the save procedure
Controller reports storage full Persistent flash capacity is exhausted by logs, images or models Archive data, adjust retention and verify a supported higher-capacity device before replacement
Writing becomes unreliable after prolonged logging Flash endurance, bad blocks or power-loss corruption Check device health and endurance, stop unnecessary writes and restore from a known-good backup
AI or vision task fails only when multiple pipelines run Insufficient DRAM working capacity or another compute bottleneck Review memory telemetry and model requirements; do not assume a larger flash device will help
New module is not detected Wrong interface, form factor, firmware support or unsupported device geometry Reinstall the original part, consult the exact compatibility list and update firmware only through the approved procedure
Intermittent crashes or corrupted live data Transient DRAM errors, signal or power problems, or broader controller faults Inspect diagnostics, ECC or scrub reports, environmental conditions and power quality before replacing memory

A practical design rule

Think of DRAM as the robot’s workbench and NAND flash as its filing cabinet. The workbench must be fast enough and large enough for everything being handled right now; the filing cabinet must be persistent, durable and large enough for the software and records that must survive tomorrow’s restart. Reliable robots use both, protect each against its characteristic failure modes and back up the files that would be costly to recreate.
