DRAM is the computer’s fast, temporary working area; NAND flash is its dense, persistent storage. DRAM holds the program code and data that a processor is actively using, but its contents disappear when power is removed. NAND flash keeps information without power and is therefore used for SSDs, memory cards, phones and other storage products. A modern computer normally needs both: DRAM for the active working set and NAND for files, applications and the operating system.
The choice between adding memory and upgrading storage follows from that division of labor. Add DRAM when applications run out of working memory and the system starts moving data to storage. Upgrade NAND-based storage when capacity is inadequate or storage operations are the bottleneck. The technologies are complementary, not interchangeable.
DRAM and NAND flash at a glance
| Characteristic | DRAM | NAND flash |
|---|---|---|
| Power behavior | Volatile: data is lost when power is removed or the system shuts down. | Non-volatile: stored charge preserves data while the device is powered off. |
| Primary role | Main memory or a high-speed cache for CPUs, GPUs and operating systems. | Secondary storage for the operating system, applications and user files. |
| Cell concept | A cell uses a transistor and a capacitor; the capacitor must be refreshed periodically. | A cell uses a transistor that traps electrical charge in a floating-gate or charge-trap structure. |
| Access model | Direct, fine-grained random access suited to an active working set. | Data is read and programmed in pages and erased in larger blocks, with a controller managing the details. |
| Density and cost per bit | Designed for responsive working memory rather than maximum capacity. | Designed to store many bits economically in a compact device. |
| Management needs | Refresh and memory-controller timing. | Error-correction coding, bad-block management and wear leveling. |
Neither technology is universally “faster” in every operation. DRAM is optimized for the processor’s immediate, random requests. NAND is optimized for persistent, high-density storage, and its observed performance depends on the flash generation, controller, interface, workload and available free space.
How a DRAM cell works
One transistor and one capacitor
A conventional DRAM bit is represented by electrical charge in a tiny capacitor. An access transistor connects that capacitor to the bit line when the memory controller selects the cell. A charged or discharged state represents the stored value. Because the charge gradually leaks away, the controller must periodically read and restore cells even when software has not changed them. This operation is called refresh.

Refresh is why DRAM is called dynamic random-access memory. “Random access” means the controller can address individual locations rather than scanning a sequential medium; “dynamic” refers to the need to maintain the charge. When the power supply is removed, the charge and therefore the data vanish. Micron’s educational description summarizes the consequence: “DRAM is a volatile memory, meaning data stored in it is lost when there is a power failure or when you shut down your system.”
Why processors use it as working memory
The operating system places currently running programs, open documents and frequently accessed data in DRAM so the CPU can reach them with predictable, fine-grained loads and stores. Graphics processors use their own high-bandwidth DRAM in many systems, while servers and workstations use large DRAM pools for virtual machines, databases and scientific workloads. The memory controller handles addressing, timing and refresh; software normally sees a flat address space rather than individual capacitors.
How a NAND flash cell works
Trapped charge makes data persistent
NAND flash stores charge in a transistor’s floating gate or charge-trap layer. The amount of trapped charge changes the transistor’s electrical threshold. During a read, the controller measures that threshold and interprets it as one or more bits. Because the charge remains after power is removed, flash is non-volatile. Samsung Semiconductor describes the property plainly: “Flash memory is a semiconductor that preserves data even when the power is off.”

Pages, blocks and controller-managed access
NAND is arranged for block-oriented operation rather than unrestricted byte-by-byte rewriting. The smallest commonly read or programmed unit is a page; many pages form an erase block. A controller can program an unused page, but erasing normally happens at the larger block level. To update a small file, the controller may write the new version elsewhere, mark the old page obsolete and later reclaim the block during garbage collection.
This organization explains why a NAND device needs more intelligence than a simple array of cells. The controller translates logical addresses into physical locations, applies error-correction coding, tracks unusable blocks and spreads writes across the media. Those functions hide the erase-before-rewrite behavior from the operating system while preserving usable capacity and reliability.
The practical differences: persistence, latency, density and endurance
Persistence determines the job
DRAM is appropriate for information that must be available while a machine is running but can be reconstructed or reloaded after a shutdown. NAND is appropriate for information that must survive a reboot, unplugging or a trip through a camera or phone. An application may be loaded from NAND into DRAM; the copy in DRAM is the working version, while the copy in NAND is the durable version.
Access patterns matter more than a single speed label
DRAM supports rapid random reads and writes at the granularity used by processor instructions. NAND devices expose storage blocks through a controller and an interface, so request size, queue depth, sequential versus random access, and background housekeeping all affect results. A product specification that quotes one peak transfer rate cannot predict every workload. Sustained writes can change as the controller fills its temporary write area or performs garbage collection.

Density and cost per bit
Flash manufacturers increase capacity by placing more cells in a die and by storing more bits in each cell. This makes NAND economical for multi-terabyte storage and tiny removable cards. DRAM is built to provide a responsive active workspace, so adding capacity is usually a system-memory decision tied to the processor and motherboard rather than a way to obtain inexpensive archival storage.
Endurance and maintenance
DRAM’s recurring maintenance task is refresh. NAND cells tolerate a finite number of program-and-erase cycles, with the exact endurance depending on the flash type, controller, workload and product design. NAND systems therefore use error correction, bad-block management and wear leveling. Wear leveling distributes writes so that one physical area does not wear out prematurely; error correction recovers data affected by cell-level variation; bad-block management prevents known-defective areas from being used.
Where DRAM is used
Desktops and laptops
System memory holds the operating system, browser tabs, editors, games and background services that are active at the same time. A laptop can have a large SSD and still feel constrained if its working set does not fit in DRAM, because the operating system must repeatedly move less-active pages to storage.
Servers and workstations
Servers use DRAM for database buffer pools, virtual-machine memory, caches and in-memory analytics. Workstations use it for large design scenes, media timelines, simulation data and development environments. Capacity, memory-channel configuration and error-detection features must match the platform; a generic module is not automatically suitable for every server or workstation.

Graphics processors use dedicated high-bandwidth DRAM to hold textures, geometry, frame buffers and compute data. Consoles combine system memory with storage, but the active game world and rendering resources still reside in volatile memory while the title is running.
Phones, tablets and edge-AI devices
Mobile devices use DRAM for the operating system, foreground apps and camera or media pipelines. Edge-AI equipment also keeps model layers, sensor streams and intermediate results in DRAM so the processor or accelerator can work without repeatedly fetching them from persistent storage.
Where NAND flash is used
Solid-state drives
SSDs package NAND dies with a controller, firmware and an interface such as SATA or NVMe. The NAND holds the operating system and files when the machine is off. Some SSDs include DRAM to cache or accelerate logical-to-physical mapping-table operations; that DRAM supports the SSD’s controller and is separate from the computer’s main memory.

NAND cell types: SLC, MLC, TLC and QLC
The number of bits stored in each cell changes the density and the margin for distinguishing charge levels. Micron identifies four common categories:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Type | Bits per cell | General trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SLC | 1 | The widest charge margin and generally the simplest endurance and sustained-write behavior, but the lowest density and highest cost per usable gigabyte. |
| MLC | 2 | More density than SLC with a compromise in endurance and write margin. |
| TLC | 3 | A common balance of capacity, cost and performance for client and many enterprise products; behavior depends heavily on controller and firmware. |
| QLC | 4 | Very high density and low cost per gigabyte, with tighter charge-level margins and workloads that may require careful sustained-write planning. |
“Better” depends on the workload. Compare products by rated endurance, sustained-write behavior, controller features, workload suitability and cost per usable gigabyte—not by bits per cell alone. A high-density design can be an excellent fit for a mostly read-heavy library, while a write-intensive service may justify a lower-density design or a product with a stronger endurance specification.
How DRAM and NAND cooperate inside a computer
Loading and saving a program
- The operating system reads the application and its required data from NAND storage.
- It places the active code and data in system DRAM, where the processor can address them directly.
- As the application changes files or creates new data, the operating system writes durable results back to NAND.
- When memory pressure rises, less-active data may be moved between DRAM and storage, trading responsiveness for capacity.
The two copies have different purposes. The NAND copy survives a restart; the DRAM copy is the fast, transient state used during execution. Increasing one does not create more of the other.
DRAM inside an SSD
An SSD can contain a small DRAM component even though its primary medium is NAND. The SSD controller uses that memory for mapping information and other management work. This does not turn NAND into RAM: the user-visible data remains persistent in flash, and the SSD’s internal DRAM loses its contents when power is removed. Product designs differ, so the presence, size and behavior of an SSD’s DRAM should be checked in the specifications rather than assumed.
Should you add RAM or upgrade the SSD?
Choose DRAM when the problem is working-memory pressure
- Applications slow down as you open more programs or browser tabs.
- The operating system reports high memory use and frequent paging or swapping.
- Large projects, virtual machines or games exceed the currently installed memory.
- Closing applications immediately restores responsiveness without freeing storage space.
Check the memory view while reproducing the slowdown. In Windows, open Task Manager → Performance → Memory. In macOS, open Activity Monitor → Memory. On Linux, free -h shows total, used and available memory. Compare the observation with the machine’s maximum supported capacity, module type, channel rules and slot availability before buying.
Choose NAND storage when capacity or storage I/O is the limit
- The drive is nearly full, leaving too little room for the operating system and applications.
- Large files, application installations or project copies take too long even though memory use is healthy.
- You need more durable local capacity for photos, video, games, datasets or backups.
- The current drive is an older storage device and the platform supports a faster SSD interface.
Check the storage view in the operating system and verify the physical and firmware requirements: drive form factor, interface, available slot, supported boot mode and any platform capacity limit. An NVMe SSD with 3D NAND is a common persistent-storage option, but interface compatibility and the workload’s sustained-write needs matter more than the label alone.
When both upgrades are justified
A machine can be short on working memory and storage simultaneously. If memory pressure causes paging and the drive is also nearly full, adding DRAM addresses the immediate responsiveness problem while a larger NAND device provides room for the operating system and files. Treat the checks as separate decisions; a large SSD will not eliminate a shortage of DRAM, and more DRAM will not create free disk space.

What to compare before buying
DRAM module checklist
- Confirm the platform’s supported memory generation, such as the required DDR family; generations are not interchangeable.
- Check the maximum capacity, number of slots, supported module capacities and channel population rules in the system or motherboard documentation.
- Match laptop, desktop, workstation or server form factors and any requirements for error-correcting memory.
- Use a matched configuration when the platform documentation calls for paired channels; mixing modules can reduce the available operating mode or stability.
- Consider capacity first for a memory-pressure problem, then frequency and timings within the platform’s supported range.
NAND SSD checklist
- Verify the physical format and interface before considering performance claims.
- Identify the NAND type—SLC, MLC, TLC or QLC—and read the manufacturer’s endurance and workload qualification.
- Look for the controller’s error-correction, bad-block and wear-leveling provisions.
- Compare sustained-write behavior, not only a short burst or peak sequential figure.
- Leave operating space for the workload and maintain backups; NAND persistence is not a substitute for a separate backup copy.
- Check whether the design includes DRAM for mapping operations and understand that this internal memory is not an expansion of system RAM.
Common misconceptions and failure modes
“NAND is just another kind of RAM.”
NAND is a type of flash storage, not volatile system RAM. It retains data without power and uses page-and-block management. A computer can use NAND as a backing store for paging, but that does not give the processor the same working-memory behavior as DRAM.
“A faster SSD fixes every slowdown.”
Replacing storage can improve boot, application-launch and file-transfer times when storage I/O is limiting. It cannot remove delays caused by an undersized DRAM working set, a CPU bottleneck, thermal throttling or an application that is itself compute-bound. Observe the limiting resource before choosing an upgrade.
Recommended Free Tools
“More DRAM increases storage capacity.”
Additional DRAM lets more active data remain immediately available; it does not provide space for permanent files. Capacity is determined by the NAND or other storage device, while working-set size is determined by installed DRAM and the software running at the same time.
“The highest bits-per-cell number is automatically the best NAND.”
Higher bits per cell can reduce cost per gigabyte and increase density, but it also changes charge margins and workload behavior. Endurance, controller design, sustained writes and the actual read/write mix determine suitability.
“An SSD never needs maintenance because flash has no moving parts.”
Flash avoids mechanical motion, but its controller still performs error correction, wear leveling, bad-block handling and garbage collection. Keep firmware and operating-system support current where the vendor provides updates, avoid filling a drive beyond the platform’s recommended operating range, and maintain independent backups of important data.
The practical rule
Think of DRAM as the desk where the processor works and NAND as the filing cabinet that keeps information after the work session ends. DRAM supplies fast volatile workspace; NAND flash supplies dense persistent storage. Modern desktops, laptops, servers, phones, consoles and edge devices combine them because no single memory technology provides both properties efficiently. Diagnose whether your limit is active working memory or persistent capacity, then upgrade the component built for that role.
