Looking for vocation obelisks in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen? The obelisk guide you may have seen is for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen. In the original Dark Arisen, vocation changes and progression work through vocation services, vocation ranks, skills, augments, and Discipline Points—not a network of Obelisks of Benediction.

Capcom’s manual index identifies the game covered here as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, with manuals for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 editions. - Reach Gran Soren and enter the Union Inn.
- Find Asalam and start a conversation.
- Select the conversation option for vocation services or changing vocation.
- Review the available vocation choices and the Discipline Point requirement shown by the game.
- Confirm the choice only after checking that the selected vocation is the one you intend to use.
- After the change, open your skill and augment menus to configure the new vocation with the abilities you have purchased.
Menu wording can differ slightly between releases or translations. Follow the function described in the conversation rather than searching for a literal “obelisk” entry.
What “upgrade a vocation” actually means
The phrase “upgrade” combines several separate systems. Separating them prevents a common mistake: assuming that changing vocation resets all progress or that character level alone unlocks every ability.

In practical terms, “upgrading” means playing a vocation long enough to raise its rank, spending Discipline Points on the options you want, and then assembling a useful skill and augment setup. It does not mean finding a physical upgrade station in each region.

Vocation rank and character level are not the same
Character level tracks the character
Your character level is the broad progression number associated with the character. It is easy to notice because it changes as the character advances, but it is not the progress bar that determines every vocation-specific purchase.
Vocation rank tracks a chosen discipline
Vocation rank belongs to the vocation you are developing. A vocation can have its own rank progress even while your character has a much higher overall level. When you select another vocation at the Union Inn, the rank progress you earned in the previous vocation is not erased. That persistence is why experimenting is viable: you can return to an earlier vocation without starting its rank from zero.
Why the distinction affects planning
- Do not reject a vocation simply because switching away from it would appear to waste rank progress; the progress is retained.
- Do not assume a high character level automatically pays for every skill or new vocation; the service uses Discipline Points for those choices.
- Keep track of which abilities you bought and which vocation rank unlocked them, so you know what is available when you return to that vocation.
Discipline Points: what they pay for
The Gran Soren vocation service requires Discipline Points for a new vocation choice, and Discipline Points are also used to purchase skills. The amount shown by the game is the authoritative price for your current release and selection.
No single universal price should be copied into a guide without checking the specific vocation and game version. If a web page gives one number as though it applies to every choice, compare it with the value displayed in Asalam’s menu before spending anything.

Check a purchase before confirming it
- Open the vocation or skill entry you are considering.
- Read the Discipline Point cost shown in the confirmation screen.
- Check whether the purchase is a new vocation choice, a skill, or another option; these are different transactions.
- Confirm only if the remaining balance still covers the next upgrade you are saving for.
If the confirmation control is unavailable, the first thing to check is your current Discipline Point balance. A locked entry can also indicate that the relevant vocation or rank requirement has not been met; read the explanation attached to that entry instead of assuming an obelisk is missing.
How to build a vocation without losing progress
1. Choose a short-term purpose
Before paying for a change, decide what you want the next vocation to do: improve your preferred combat role, unlock a particular skill, or develop an augment that will help another vocation later. This keeps Discipline Point spending intentional.
2. Raise the current vocation’s rank
Use the vocation in normal play and watch its rank progress in the status or vocation interface. Rank advancement is separate from the character-level number, so check the vocation screen when you want to know whether a new rank-related option is close.
3. Buy only the skills you can use
Skills cost Discipline Points. Prioritize abilities that fit the way you actually play rather than purchasing every entry immediately. A smaller set of familiar skills is easier to configure when you return from another vocation.
4. Save Discipline Points for a planned change
Because the next vocation choice has its own Discipline Point requirement, avoid spending your entire balance on minor upgrades if you intend to switch soon. The exact cost is displayed by Asalam and should be treated as the deciding figure.
5. Switch at the Union Inn and reconfigure
Once you have enough points and the desired option is available, return to Asalam. After confirming the new vocation, inspect the skill and augment screens. Your rank progress remains retained, and purchased augments can be equipped across vocations, but you still need to select the loadout you want to use now.
Augments are the main reason to develop more than one vocation
Capcom’s class-system explanation makes an important distinction: purchased augments remain available to equip across vocations. That means rank work in one vocation can produce a benefit for a later vocation, provided you have purchased the augment and select it in the appropriate configuration screen.

A useful development loop is therefore:
- Advance a vocation until it offers a useful augment or skill.
- Spend Discipline Points on that option when the game shows it as available.
- Change vocation through Asalam when you are ready to pursue a different role.
- Open the augment menu and check the cross-vocation options you have already purchased.
- Build the new vocation around the augments and skills that match your current approach.
This system rewards experimentation without promising that every skill is interchangeable. The cross-vocation rule cited by Capcom applies to purchased augments; vocation-specific skills should be reviewed in the game’s own menus.

Because rank progress is retained, you can treat vocations as parallel development tracks rather than a permanent choice. A sensible route starts with the role you enjoy most, then uses later switches to pursue a specific skill or augment. You do not have to decide on a single vocation for the entire game.
- Start with a baseline role. Use the vocation that feels comfortable while learning the combat and menu systems. This gives you a stable setup while you accumulate Discipline Points.
- Identify a concrete next objective. Decide whether the next switch is for a vocation option, a skill, or an augment. A defined objective makes the displayed price meaningful instead of encouraging random purchases.
- Check requirements before leaving the inn. Read both the Discipline Point cost and any rank or availability message. A sufficient point balance alone may not make every entry selectable.
- Record what you bought. When you return to an earlier vocation, its rank progress remains, but the active menu still reflects the vocation you are currently using. Keeping track of purchased options prevents confusing an unlocked entry with an acquired one.
- Rebuild after every switch. Changing vocation is only the first step. Open the skill and augment interfaces and deliberately select the abilities you want for the new role.
This approach also explains why a failed experiment is usually recoverable. Switching away does not erase the earlier vocation’s rank, and a purchased augment can remain useful after the change. The resources you spend should still be planned, because Discipline Points are limited until you earn more through play.

Troubleshooting vocation changes
Asalam does not offer the expected option
Confirm that you are speaking with Asalam in the Gran Soren Union Inn, not another innkeeper or service NPC. Then read each available conversation entry; the wording may not be identical across editions. If the desired choice is still absent, inspect the requirement shown by the menu rather than looking for an obelisk elsewhere.
The game says you cannot afford the change
Check your Discipline Point balance and the exact cost displayed for that vocation. Do not rely on a cost quoted for a different vocation, platform release, or translation. Continue playing with your current vocation until you have the required points, then return to the Union Inn.
Your rank appears to have disappeared after switching
Changing vocation changes which rank is active on screen. It does not delete the previous vocation’s rank progress, according to Capcom’s explanation. Select the earlier vocation again if you need to view or continue that progress.

An augment is not visible in the new vocation
Verify that the augment was purchased rather than merely unlocked for purchase, then open the augment configuration screen after changing vocation. The cross-vocation rule concerns purchased augments; an unpurchased entry will not become available simply because another vocation reached a rank.
A guide lists obelisks that you cannot find
Check the game title in the guide’s heading. If it says Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen or refers to Obelisks of Benediction, it is describing the other game. For the original Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, stop following those coordinates and use Asalam’s service in Gran Soren.
