Armor upgrading in Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen has three different progression systems. Standard enhancement spends gold and materials to move eligible armor from zero to one, two, and three stars. Dragonforging is a separate chance-based result from defeating a qualifying dragon while the Arisen is wearing the item. Bitterblack Isle then adds rarification through its own service, extending progression beyond dragonforging.
Because every armor piece has its own statistics, materials, and prices, there is no reliable universal cost or gain per star. Use the zero-star armor index to compare a piece’s starting Defense, Magick Defense, and vocation eligibility, then check that item’s individual upgrade table before spending rare materials or Rift Crystals.
The three armor-upgrade systems are not interchangeable
Players often use “upgrade” to describe several mechanics that work differently. Treat them as separate decisions: paid enhancement changes an item’s star level, dragonforging is earned from a dragon kill, and rarification is a further Dark Arisen progression associated with Bitterblack Isle.

Normal enhancement is a service performed for gold and required materials. Eligible equipment advances through one-star, two-star, and three-star states. The enhancement reference covers weapons and armor; jewelry is excluded. Dark Arisen adds Barroch on Bitterblack Isle to the existing enhancement providers, so equipment can be improved there as well as through the game’s other services.

The materials do not all need to be in the character’s carried inventory. If the item is stored, the service can draw from storage when the carried quantity is insufficient. This makes a storage check part of the process, but it does not remove the requirement to possess the exact material or enough gold.
Dragonforging: a dragon-kill result, not a purchase
Dragonforging does not appear as an ordinary paid enhancement tier. The Arisen must have the armor equipped at the moment a qualifying dragon is defeated. Carrying the armor, leaving it in storage, or putting it on a pawn does not satisfy that condition.
Eligibility and chance depend on the enemy and the item’s existing enhancement state. Some dragon types require at least one star before an item can dragonforge, while The Dragon and the online Ur-Dragon dragonforge all equipped items according to the documented mechanic. These rules mean that a failed result can be caused by the dragon encountered or by the armor’s star level, not by missing gold.

Rarification on Bitterblack Isle
Rarification is a Dark Arisen progression beyond dragonforging. It is associated with Bitterblack Isle and its specialist, Barroch. Do not treat rarification as another name for three-star enhancement or dragonforging: the systems have different providers, requirements, and outcomes. Confirm the exact item-level rarification requirements before committing scarce resources, because a general armor list does not supply them.
What the armor statistics actually tell you
The broad armor index is a zero-star reference. It lists each piece’s starting Defense, Magick Defense, and vocation eligibility. Those values identify the baseline, not the final three-star, dragonforged, or rarified result.

For a concrete baseline, the armor index lists the Hellfire Helm at 115 Defense and 70 Magick Defense at zero stars. Those figures should be read as the helm’s starting point; they are not a universal value for Hellfire equipment and do not describe an enhanced version.
How to upgrade a piece without wasting materials
- Identify the exact item and its zero-star baseline. Record the armor’s Defense, Magick Defense, vocation restriction, resistances, and any special effect. A high base value is not automatically the best choice if the piece is unusable by your vocation or lacks a resistance your build needs.
- Open the item-specific enhancement information. Confirm every star’s materials and fee for that armor. The game’s armor pool does not use one shared price formula, so a price shown for one set cannot be copied to another.
- Consolidate your resources. Keep the required gold available and make sure each named material exists either in carried inventory or storage. Storage can supply a shortfall in carried materials, but it cannot substitute for a different item.
- Use an enhancement provider. Select the armor and the next available star level, review the material and gold deduction, and confirm only after checking that you are upgrading the intended piece. In Dark Arisen, Barroch on Bitterblack Isle is an additional provider.
- Repeat only when the next tier is worth its cost. The second and third stars can call for different materials and fees. Compare the item’s next stat increase and special effects with the resources you would consume rather than assuming every star has the same value.
- Plan dragonforging separately. If you want a dragonforged result, equip the armor on the Arisen before the qualifying victory. Carrying it or assigning it to a pawn is not enough. Check whether the target dragon and the armor’s current star state meet the applicable eligibility rule.
- Use Bitterblack Isle rarification only after confirming its requirements. Rarification extends progression beyond dragonforging, but the exact item conditions and resource costs are item-specific. Treat the available in-game or item-level table as authoritative for the armor you selected.
Costs and materials: why one example cannot price every armor
Upgrade prices are attached to individual armor pieces and tiers. The strongest documented example is Celestial Armor, which is listed with a 1,760,000 G base cost. Its first enhancement example is 48,000 G; later stages use different resources and can require additional gold or Rift Crystals. These figures describe that armor’s listing only. They are not a starting price, a percentage formula, or a typical fee for every piece in the game.

Hellfire Armor material planning
The Hellfire Armor reference names Rubicite, Maleficent Heart, Phantom Orb, and Vile Wakestone among its relevant upgrade materials. The documented acquisition contexts include mining Rubicite in Bitterblack Isle and obtaining Vile Wakestone from Daimon’s second form.
Those acquisition notes are not a promise that every listed material is needed at every tier. Match each resource to the exact Hellfire Armor star or progression stage shown in the item’s table before farming. A material can be relevant to the armor’s full path while absent from the particular tier you are currently purchasing.
Choosing between armor pieces
Start with the role the armor must serve, then score the candidates against the same criteria. The zero-star index is useful for the first three checks; the remaining checks require the item’s own upgrade information.

A sensible comparison can therefore produce different winners for different characters. One armor may lead in Defense, another in Magick Defense, and a third may be the only eligible option for the vocation or resistance profile you need. The correct choice is the one whose complete progression path matches your build and available resources.
Why an armor may seem impossible to upgrade
When the enhancement service refuses an item, diagnose the system first instead of assuming a missing pile of gold.
The item is jewelry
Jewelry is outside the standard weapon-and-armor enhancement eligibility described by the enhancement reference. A full material inventory cannot make an excluded category appear in the service.
You are checking the wrong tier
Each star can have a different material list and fee. Having enough for one stage does not satisfy the next. Reopen the item’s current tier and compare the exact names and quantities.
The material is not the same item
Upgrade lists use specific resources. A related drop, a different rarity, or a similarly named object does not fulfill the requirement. Match the name exactly and check storage as well as carried inventory.

You are expecting dragonforging to behave like paid enhancement
Dragonforging requires the Arisen to wear the armor at a qualifying dragon victory. The armor will not qualify merely because it is carried, stored, or equipped by a pawn. Also check the target dragon’s rule and the item’s star state, since eligibility and chance vary.
You are looking for rarification in the ordinary enhancement menu
Rarification is a Dark Arisen progression associated with Bitterblack Isle and Barroch, not simply another name for a normal star. Move to the appropriate service and verify the armor-specific condition.
You are using a base-stat list as an upgrade table
The broad armor index reports zero-star values. It does not establish the exact gains, materials, or costs for every later stage. Use the individual armor reference or the in-game listing for the tier you intend to buy.

Dragonforging is easiest to manage when treated as an equipment assignment rather than a shopping transaction.

- Choose the exact armor you want to dragonforge before the fight.
- Equip it on the Arisen, not merely on a pawn.
- Confirm whether its current star level satisfies the relevant dragon’s minimum requirement.
- Keep the item equipped through the victory event; carrying it elsewhere does not count.
- Interpret a failed attempt as a chance or eligibility outcome, because the result is not guaranteed for every dragon and enhancement state.
- Remember that The Dragon and the online Ur-Dragon are documented as dragonforging all equipped items, while other dragon rules can differ.
This process does not replace three-star enhancement. If a dragon requires a minimum star level, the paid enhancement must be completed first; if you are pursuing rarification afterward, that is another Dark Arisen step through Bitterblack Isle.

What is and is not established for a complete armor catalog
The available armor index is useful for broad comparison: it supplies zero-star Defense, Magick Defense, and vocation restrictions across many pieces. It does not establish a single complete table of every star-level statistic, material quantity, gold fee, Rift Crystal fee, dragonforging chance, and rarification requirement.
For a dependable purchase decision, verify three layers separately:
- Baseline: the item’s zero-star statistics and vocation eligibility.
- Paid path: every star’s exact stat change, material list, and fee.
- Post-three-star path: the dragonforging eligibility and the rarification requirements that apply to that item.
Do not fill an unlisted cell with an assumed value from another set. If a comparison source does not state a cost or requirement, record it as not stated and check the item in-game before committing resources.
Armor upgrade checklist
- Have I confirmed the armor’s zero-star Defense and Magick Defense?
- Is the intended vocation allowed to equip it?
- Do its resistances or special bonuses fit the build?
- Have I read the exact next-tier material and gold requirement?
- Did I check both carried inventory and storage?
- Am I upgrading armor rather than jewelry?
- Am I treating dragonforging as a dragon-kill condition rather than a paid menu option?
- Will the Arisen be wearing the item at the qualifying victory?
- Does the dragon and current star state satisfy the documented eligibility rule?
- If I want rarification, have I confirmed the Bitterblack Isle and Barroch requirements for this exact item?
Following that sequence prevents the most expensive mistakes: paying for a tier you do not need, farming the wrong material, or expecting a dragonforged or rarified result from the ordinary enhancement service.
