If you have just given the Sphinx a wrong answer, stop playing and try to restore a save from before that answer. A wrong response is effectively a one-shot failure: you should expect to lose that riddle’s reward, and you normally cannot retry it in the same sequence. Force-closing the game may help only if the failed state has not autosaved. Loading an earlier inn save is the more established recovery option, but it can erase progress made since that rest.
What a wrong answer means
Treat each Sphinx riddle as a single attempt. PowerPyx describes one try per riddle, while Push Square says a failed riddle cannot be attempted again in the normal sequence. The likely immediate consequence is losing the reward tied to that riddle—not simply being asked to choose again.
That does not establish that every wrong answer always ends the entire Sphinx quest. Guides differ on what happens to the remaining riddles: some describe the Sphinx leaving after a mistake, while others distinguish a lost reward from the end of the full riddle game. The stage matters, so avoid assuming that the consequence reported for one shrine applies to both.

If earning Full Marks matters to you, the safest assumption is that the mistake counts against it unless you restore a save from before the answer.

What to do immediately
- Stop progressing. Do not continue answering riddles, exploring, resting, or otherwise advancing the game while deciding what to do. Continuing may allow the failed state to be saved or make it harder to return to the earlier point.
- If the answer was just given, close the game promptly. Push Square recommends quickly closing the game before autosave. This is a time-sensitive attempt, not a guaranteed undo: it helps only if the failure has not already been saved. The available guides do not establish one universal force-close procedure for every platform, so use your platform’s normal way to exit the game rather than following an unverified button sequence.
- Reopen and check whether a pre-answer save is available. If the game offers a save from before the mistake, load it and confirm that you are back before submitting the answer. Do not assume that simply quitting and reopening restores the earlier state; if the failed state autosaved, quitting may leave it intact.
- If needed, load the earlier inn save. The guides identify the last inn rest as the practical fallback. Choose a save from before the wrong answer if one is available, then verify the Sphinx encounter is in its prior state before proceeding.
- Reassess what was rolled back. An inn save can discard progress made since that rest. Check your recent quest and exploration progress before deciding whether the recovery is worth the rollback.
If no save from before the answer remains, the sources reviewed do not establish a reliable way to reset that riddle or restore its reward. Do not count on finding the Sphinx again or starting the same riddle over in the current playthrough.
Mountain Shrine and Frontier Shrine are not interchangeable
The Sphinx encounter has two stages: an initial set of riddles at Mountain Shrine and a later set at Frontier Shrine. This distinction matters because guides do not describe the consequences of a failed answer consistently across the full encounter.

GINX describes the Sphinx disappearing after a wrong answer. Because other guides frame the consequences differently, that report is not enough to promise that the Sphinx always departs immediately in every stage and circumstance. The practical advice remains the same: try to restore a pre-answer save rather than relying on the encounter continuing.

These are different recovery attempts, with different risks. Closing the game quickly is meant to prevent the new failure from being saved. Loading an inn save deliberately returns you to an earlier saved point. Neither approach guarantees recovery, and the first does not replace the second if the failed state has already autosaved.

Before choosing the inn save, weigh the value of restoring the riddle against everything you have done since the last rest. The guides do not specify a platform-independent save menu path or guarantee that every player has a usable inn save, so check the available save choices in your own game.
What if the Sphinx is no longer there?
If you return to a shrine and cannot find the Sphinx, that does not by itself identify exactly what happened to the rest of your riddle progress. Guides report disappearance after failure, but their accounts of whether one mistake ends the whole sequence are not uniform. The later Frontier Shrine warning is more specific than the general descriptions of the Mountain Shrine stage.

- If you still have a pre-answer inn save, decide whether to load it, accounting for the progress it will roll back.
- If you have no earlier save, the available guides do not verify a way to make the Sphinx reappear or repeat the failed riddle in that playthrough.
- If Full Marks is your goal, treat a saved wrong answer as a likely playthrough-level setback rather than assuming a later visit will repair it.
These are guide-based descriptions, not an official Capcom statement. The sources do not establish a guaranteed recovery route once the failed state has been saved.

How to avoid a second mistake
Before submitting any remaining answer, pause long enough to confirm that you are selecting the response you intend. Since attempts are treated as one-shot and each riddle has its own reward, do not use an answer choice as a test. If preserving a clean Full Marks run is important, make sure you understand your current save situation before continuing the encounter.

In particular, distinguish between wanting to recover one lost reward and wanting to preserve the entire riddle sequence. The sources support the loss of the specific reward after a wrong answer; they do not support a universal claim that all remaining progress is always lost after one mistake. At Frontier Shrine, however, Windows Central explicitly warns that a wrong answer ends the riddle game, so the later stage warrants extra caution.
