Dragon’s Dogma 2 has six pawn specializations, each giving a pawn a distinct utility role. A pawn can have one specialization at a time; use a tome for a different specialization to replace the current one. The right choice depends on whether you need healing support, material discovery, inventory help, Elvish translation, or less chatter.
What pawn specializations do
Specializations add utility to a pawn rather than defining its vocation. The six options affect item use, exploration, inventory handling, language access, or speech.

Chirurgeon
A Chirurgeon pawn can use curatives on the Arisen and other allies on its own initiative. This provides item-based support, but it also uses curatives from your party’s supplies.

Forager
A Forager marks locations of enhancement materials on the map, helping you plan where to gather materials for upgrades.

Hawker
A Hawker pawn can offer to buy selected items from your inventory for gold. Capcom warns that Hawker pawns may offer to sell low-rarity items, so inspect the items before accepting.
Logistician
A Logistician combines materials and moves items between allies’ packs. Capcom notes that Logistician pawns can automatically receive items or equipment from the Arisen, which may change what you are carrying without an obvious manual transfer.

Woodland Wordsmith
A Woodland Wordsmith helps members of the pawn’s company understand Elvish, making the specialization useful around Elvish-language content.
Aphonite
An Aphonite pawn limits its speech except in select circumstances. Its main benefit is quieter exploration; no specific combat advantage is established.

How to change a pawn’s specialization
Use the tome for the specialization you want to teach the pawn. Each tome grants the specialization named in its item description, and teaching a different one replaces the pawn’s current specialization. This is not a free toggle or a separate respecialization menu.
- Obtain a tome for the specialization you want.
- Use that tome on the pawn you want to teach.
- Check the pawn’s specialization information to confirm the change.
If you need a specialization only for a particular trip, you can hire a support pawn that already has it instead of changing your own pawn. Pawn lists in the Rift let you view specialization information. Cross-player pawn hiring is limited to players on the same platform, according to Capcom’s support FAQ.

Where to find specialization tomes
Published guide routes associate some tomes with quests and NPC interactions, but the reviewed Capcom FAQ and manual do not provide a complete source list. Treat the following as reported routes rather than a guaranteed, exhaustive acquisition guide; quest state, NPC interactions, or reward availability may matter.
- Chirurgeon: A guide associates the tome with the Medicament Predicament quest in Melve and a later interaction with Flora.
- Forager and Logistician: A guide associates these tomes with the follow-up to The Heel of History.
- Other specializations: Guide-reported sources include NPC affinity and location-specific rewards; the reviewed sources do not establish a complete route for each tome.
Check the relevant quest and NPC state in your current game before following a specific route. The item descriptions identify what each tome teaches, but do not by themselves establish where every tome can be obtained.

Which specialization should you use?
Choose according to your party’s immediate needs and how much control you want over supplies and inventory.

There is no universally best specialization: the options solve different situational problems. If you want strict control over every item, avoid relying on Hawker or Logistician; if you only need a particular utility briefly, hiring a pawn with that specialization can meet the need.
