Short answer: Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on Nintendo Switch 2 is the portable version, but it reaches that flexibility by reducing visual detail and using reconstruction. Reports describe DLSS-upscaled output of 1080p when docked and 720p in handheld mode, along with simpler lighting, less foliage and more pop-in than the higher-specification console presentation. Its graphics modes also involve meaningful compromises: one has uneven 30-fps pacing, handheld VRR can misbehave, and frame generation adds latency. Xbox Series X has a 60-fps maximum setting after Update 3.2, while Series S is capped at 45 fps in that setting. There is not yet a complete, matched-patch data set for Switch 2, PS5, Series X and Series S, so no defensible source-backed ranking of all four platforms exists.

What version is being compared?

Capcom announced Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on June 10, 2026. The package combines the base game with its expansion; Capcom describes the original game as having launched in March 2024. The Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox versions therefore belong to the same announced Dark Arisen release rather than being unrelated editions. Capcom’s announcement is the authoritative source for the release date, platform list and bundle description: Capcom’s June 10, 2026 announcement.

Capcom also reported more than 14 million cumulative units sold for the Dragon’s Dogma series as of March 31, 2026. That is a franchise-wide figure, not sales for Dragon’s Dogma 2 alone.

Platform comparison at a glance

Platform What current reporting establishes What remains unestablished Practical implication
Switch 2, docked Digital Foundry analysis, as summarized by Nintendo Life, reports DLSS-upscaled 1080p output, simplified lighting, reduced foliage density and more pop-in. No complete set of measured averages or a matched image-quality test against every PS5 and Xbox mode. Best fit when you want a TV presentation and the option to move the same game to handheld play, accepting visual reductions.
Switch 2, handheld The same report describes DLSS-upscaled 720p output. A separate comparison report says performance hovers around 40 fps in its tested experience. No uniform handheld benchmark against fixed-console output; handheld and docked modes have different display and VRR conditions. Unique portability, with the lowest reported output resolution and the greatest need to judge image quality on the built-in screen.
PS5 Capcom lists PS5 as a platform, and Nintendo Life published a Switch 2-versus-PS5 graphics comparison. The available report text does not provide PS5 resolution, graphics settings, frame-time charts or a measured frame-rate distribution. A direct visual reference exists, but the available evidence cannot quantify a PS5 advantage in a like-for-like table.
Xbox Series X Windows Central reports a maximum FSR-upscaled frame-rate setting of 60 fps after Title Update 3.2 on September 2, 2026. The report does not supply a directly comparable average frame rate, resolution or visual-setting analysis for Switch 2 and PS5. It has the highest stated console frame-rate ceiling in the cited update, but a ceiling is not the same as a guaranteed or measured average.
Xbox Series S The same Update 3.2 report gives a maximum FSR-upscaled setting of 45 fps. No matched average-performance or visual-quality data against the other platforms. Its published setting is below Series X’s ceiling; actual experience still depends on scene complexity and frame pacing.

How the Switch 2 version achieves its output

1080p docked and 720p handheld are reconstructed outputs

Nintendo Life’s report of Digital Foundry’s technical analysis identifies 1080p docked and 720p handheld output, both described as DLSS-upscaled. These numbers describe the displayed output after reconstruction, not a claim that the game renders every frame natively at 1920×1080 or 1280×720. DLSS uses lower-resolution input and reconstructs a higher-resolution image; the result can look sharper than the internal render, but it is not equivalent to native rendering in every fine-detail or motion condition. Read the figures as output targets reported by the analysis, not as native-resolution specifications.

Lighting, foliage and pop-in are the visible concessions

The same analysis summary reports simplified lighting, lower foliage density and more pop-in on Switch 2. Lighting simplification can reduce the complexity of shadows, reflections or indirect illumination that make the world appear richer on a more powerful fixed console. Lower foliage density means fewer grass and plant details in a scene. Pop-in is the late appearance of objects or detail as the camera moves or the game streams the world. These are visible rendering trade-offs, not evidence that the game content or quest systems are missing.

Because the Switch 2 version is also used handheld, its 720p output is shown on a smaller display than a typical television. Perceived sharpness therefore depends on viewing distance, screen size and motion; a 720p handheld image and a 1080p docked image should not be judged as though they were the same display setup.

Switch 2 graphics modes and frame-rate behavior

Standard mode: nominally 30 fps, but uneven pacing

Digital Foundry’s findings, as reported by Nintendo Life, describe the standard mode as having juddery 30-fps frame pacing. Frame rate is the number of frames produced over time; frame pacing is how evenly those frames arrive. A game can average close to 30 fps yet feel inconsistent if some frames persist longer than others. The report’s wording matters: this is a pacing criticism, not a claim that every scene falls below 30 fps.

Undocked mode: VRR behavior is not consistently reliable

The same report identifies VRR problems in undocked mode. Variable refresh rate allows a compatible display to adjust its refresh timing to the game’s frame delivery. When VRR behavior is unreliable, the feature may not smooth motion as expected, and the result can vary with the display, connection and scene. A handheld buyer should not assume that enabling a VRR-related setting automatically removes judder or tearing.

Frame generation: smoother motion with added input latency

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. It can make motion appear more fluid, but those generated frames do not represent extra game-simulation updates. Nintendo Life’s summary says the Switch 2 frame-generation option increases input latency, and its comparison report describes the experience as equivalent to 60 fps. “Equivalent to 60 fps” is a description of perceived output in that comparison, not proof of stable native 60-fps rendering. For timing-sensitive actions, the extra latency can matter more than the smoother appearance.

A separate Nintendo Life side-by-side report says Switch 2 performance hovers around 40 fps in its comparison video. That is an observation from the video’s test conditions, not a complete average or a guarantee for every area, mode or patch. The report and the technical analysis together support a choice among imperfect trade-offs rather than one universally correct Switch 2 mode: standard mode favors a conventional presentation but has uneven pacing, undocked play has VRR concerns, and frame generation favors apparent smoothness at the cost of responsiveness.

What the PS5 comparison does and does not prove

Nintendo Life published a Switch 2-versus-PS5 side-by-side graphics comparison. It is useful for seeing differences in a shared scene, but the available report does not provide PS5 resolution, graphics settings, frame-time graphs or a statistically measured frame-rate range. Consequently, it is reasonable to say that Switch 2 makes visible rendering concessions relative to the reference shown in the comparison, but not to assign a precise PS5 resolution, guarantee a particular PS5 frame rate or declare a measured PS5 victory across every visual category.

The absence of a number is important. A video comparison can reveal lighting, foliage, texture or pop-in differences while leaving unanswered which settings were selected, whether both builds were on the same patch, and how performance behaved over a long play session. Those unknowns prevent a rigorous “PS5 is X percent faster” or “PS5 always runs at Y fps” conclusion from the cited material.

Xbox Series X and Series S after Update 3.2

Series X: a 60-fps maximum setting

Windows Central reports that Title Update 3.2, released September 2, 2026, added a maximum FSR-upscaled frame-rate setting of 60 fps on Xbox Series X. FSR is the reconstruction method named by that report. “Maximum setting” identifies the selectable ceiling; it does not establish a stable 60-fps average in every town, combat encounter or traversal sequence. The report also does not provide a directly matched resolution or visual-setting comparison with Switch 2 or PS5. See the update coverage at Windows Central.

Series S: a 45-fps maximum setting

Windows Central gives Xbox Series S a 45-fps maximum FSR-upscaled setting in the same update report. That ceiling is lower than Series X’s published 60-fps setting. It should not be converted into an average-frame-rate claim, and the cited report does not establish how resolution, lighting, foliage or other visual settings differ between Series S and the other consoles.

Why the Xbox figures cannot settle the whole comparison

The Xbox numbers and Switch 2 reports use different evidence types: selectable maximum settings for Xbox, reported output resolutions and mode observations for Switch 2, and a comparison video for the approximately 40-fps description. Comparing those figures as though they were one benchmark would mix ceilings, observed behavior and generated output. A valid cross-platform result would need the same game patch, scene route, graphics mode, capture method and measurement interval on every system.

How to compare the platforms fairly

1. Separate output resolution from internal rendering

Record the displayed resolution and the reconstruction method separately. Switch 2’s cited 1080p docked and 720p handheld figures are DLSS-upscaled outputs. Xbox’s cited 60-fps and 45-fps settings are FSR-upscaled modes. Neither statement alone tells you the internal render resolution, and neither should be compared with an unstated native-resolution assumption on PS5.

2. Identify the selected graphics mode

Performance, quality, standard, handheld and frame-generation options can change image detail, frame delivery and latency. A screenshot or frame-rate number without its mode is incomplete. Record whether the system is docked or handheld, whether frame generation is enabled, and whether VRR is active.

3. Measure frame pacing, not only the peak number

Average frames per second and frame-time consistency answer different questions. The Switch 2 standard-mode report’s “juddery” pacing illustrates why a nominal 30-fps label does not guarantee even motion. Likewise, an Xbox maximum setting is a limit the game can target, not proof that every frame arrives at that interval.

4. Treat generated frames and rendered frames differently

Native rendering updates the game simulation and produces a frame from the engine. Frame generation inserts additional displayed frames between rendered frames. The latter can improve perceived smoothness while leaving control response closer to the underlying rendered rate and adding latency, as the Switch 2 analysis reports.

5. Include the player’s display and play context

Docked Switch 2 play is a television-style comparison; handheld play is a smaller-screen, portable use case. VRR support, refresh behavior and viewing distance affect what a player notices. A fixed-screen console may be preferable for someone who values a consistent large-display image, while Switch 2’s defining advantage is the ability to continue playing away from the TV.

Which version makes sense for different priorities?

Choose Switch 2 for portability and one-package convenience

Switch 2 is the only platform in the cited comparison that offers handheld play. Its package combines the base game and expansion, according to Capcom. Choose it when playing away from a television is more important than retaining the highest reported lighting and foliage detail. Expect to select among modes with different compromises rather than finding a setting that removes every drawback.

Choose Xbox Series X when the published frame-rate ceiling is the priority

Series X has the highest stated maximum setting in the available console reporting: 60 fps with FSR upscaling after Update 3.2. That makes it the clearest choice on paper for a player prioritizing a high frame-rate option, but the evidence does not show a matched average or guarantee 60 fps in every scene.

Consider Series S with realistic expectations about its ceiling

Series S’s reported maximum setting is 45 fps. It may suit a player already using that console, but the available sources do not quantify its average performance or detail exactly how its visual settings compare with Series X, PS5 or Switch 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use PS5 side-by-side footage as visual evidence, not a complete benchmark

The PS5 comparison can help you inspect scene-by-scene differences, especially where Switch 2’s lighting, foliage and pop-in reductions are visible. It cannot, from the supplied report alone, answer questions about PS5’s exact output resolution, frame-rate distribution or frame pacing.

Capcom’s pre-release expectation versus post-release reports

Before launch, producer Naoto Oyama told TechRadar: “we’re currently seeing a minimum 30 frames per second rate performance on that hardware (and, in many scenes, it’s even higher!).” The July 16, 2026 interview was a pre-release statement, so it describes Capcom’s expectation rather than independent testing. Oyama also said: “So it’s a little while to go until the game releases, but it’s exceeding our expectations on Switch 2, and I hope the players agree that we’ve done a great job again with bringing this game to that platform.” That is promotional forecasting, not a measured cross-platform result. The interview is available at TechRadar.

Post-release technical coverage deserves greater weight for observed behavior. The later analysis reports uneven 30-fps pacing in one Switch 2 mode, VRR problems in undocked use and added latency with frame generation. Those findings do not necessarily contradict a statement that many scenes can exceed 30 fps; they show why a minimum expectation is not the same as a stable target across all conditions.

Edition and availability details to verify

Capcom confirms the Switch 2 package bundles the main game and expansion and lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. The cited material does not establish physical-media format, retail stock, current price or whether every platform’s expansion is packaged identically. Before buying, verify the exact edition, platform compatibility, physical or digital format and current availability. Do not assume that a PS5 or Xbox purchase includes the same bundle without checking that platform’s listing.

Why there is no definitive overall winner yet

The available evidence is not an apples-to-apples laboratory comparison. Switch 2 has reported DLSS output figures, visual concessions and mode-specific behavior. Xbox has published maximum FSR-upscaled settings after a named update. PS5 appears in a side-by-side comparison but lacks detailed figures in the available report. The sources do not provide one consistent set of current-patch measurements covering resolution, visual settings, average frame rate, frame pacing, VRR and latency on all four platforms.

That means the most accurate verdict is conditional: Switch 2 trades visual fidelity and mode simplicity for portability; Series X offers the highest stated frame-rate ceiling; Series S has a lower published ceiling; and PS5 cannot be ranked numerically from the available data. A future matched test could change the practical ordering, especially if patches alter reconstruction, frame pacing or graphics modes.
